mjcl··on Country Time Lemonade Will Pay Legal Fees for Unlicensed Lemonade Stands
Country Time sells powered lemonade in US supermarkets.

Separately, there’s a US tradition of children setting up lemonade stands to make pocket money during the summer. Typically parents help buy the supplies, the idea being that the kids are learning to work for money instead of being just given it outright.

Some US cities have strict permit requirements for selling food & beverage which has lead to silly looking photos/stories of police giving 10 year old kids tickets.

This is basically a publicity stunt by Country Time lemonade.

mjcl··on Why emergency braking systems sometimes hit parked cars and lane dividers
My experience (mostly BART & SF Muni Metro) is that “smelly person” is a euphemism for homeless person.

Different OSes handle it differently. Windows tries the primary, waits 1 second and then starts trying secondaries.
mjcl··on CBS “60 Minutes” piece on Google’s abuse of dominance
The best yelp engagement I saw worked with customers directly: a property manager ran a raffle for half off a months rent. To enter, you just had to leave a review on yelp. They didn’t explicitly ask for good reviews, but the majority were pretty positive.

For about the same amount that yelp wanted for sponsorship, they got over 30 real, quality reviews that complimented the recent improvements that had been made.

mjcl··on Did Google Fake Its Big A.I. Demo?
No, they usually give the name of the restaurant. People giving their name is less common.
mjcl··on How a domain registrar can kill your business
Office 365 is pretty close to that, actually. You need Premier support to get anything useful.

My favorite O365 support story is where first level support dicked around so long with a missing mailbox that by the time they escalated the ticket, their backup had been overwritten. Luckily it was a user’s archive mailbox and we still had their source PSTs, so not a lot was lost.

mjcl··on Man Allegedly Used Change of Address Form to Move UPS Headquarters
A short story about the USPSIS:

I was downloading Postal Service mp3s from Kazaa and ended up downloading some USPS disciplinary reports on accident. I shared them with a friend because I thought they were funny, and he posted excerpts on a message board. From there it somehow got to the USPSIS who tracked down my friend’s cell phone #. I eventually agreed to meet, so the inspector flew out from DC and met us at a diner in Santa Cruz. He showed us his badge and went over how I ended up with the files. The whole thing was sort of bizarre, but he was pretty friendly and seemed more interested in figuring out how the files got out than throwing the book at me or my friend.

mjcl··on AT&T explains why it blocked Cloudflare DNS: It was just an accident
My experience with AT&T was that they were overly bureaucratic but outside of those rules anything goes. For example, they didn't ask for an LOA for BGP announcements of other people's IP space. When we were turning up a new Comcast circuit we accidentally leaked Comcast's customer routes (~5000) to AT&T and they were accepted.

mjcl··on Credit Card Signatures Are About to Become Extinct in the U.S
Yup! I worked for a property management company that was rolling out check scanning (X9 imaging, not ACH/ARC) to 150 locations. In every group that was rolled out there was inevitably at least one person that would scan a batch of checks and enter the amounts really incorrectly.
mjcl··on Apple Is Looking for Linux Kernel Developers
I would expect that the wholesale change from Darwin to Linux would introduce an amazing number of new and awful bugs. It's not like their development processes will suddenly be fixed when it's been touched by Linux.

Or even create a self-fulfilling prophecy. What if someone is listed as "may leave" when they have no intent to do so. If the employer then starts freezing the employee out, that could lead the the employee eventually leaving, even if they didn't originally want to.
mjcl··on As epidemic rages, ER study finds opioids no better than Advil and Tylenol
I had a slightly different experience, luckily, I guess. When I was in recovery after having a brain tumor removed, I was first being given fentanyl once every hour or two. I found that for the few minutes I was lucid (before the next dose), I really didn't have much pain and asked for something less strong. They moved me to norco, which still seemed too strong. After another request for something less, they moved me to plain tylenol.

I did get a big script for norco when I was discharged, but their instructions were to take it if the pain became distracting.

The nursing and medical staff at the hospital (CPMC Davies) overall seemed great, so it may just be the difference between staff that listens/tries and staff that doesn't.

mjcl··on Amazon gains wholesale pharmacy licenses in multiple states
I think they're a mixed bag, probably depending on some customer profitability / value score. I've heard other people complain about trouble when packages were stolen, but the few times it's happened to me, I've gotten replacements overnighted without even having to talk (chat or phone) to anyone.

They're not alone. I spent about five hours (across several meetings) trying to convince a CFO that giving an employee no annual increase was a negative signal. I think he only gave in when he realized I wasn't going to let it go.

mjcl··on Equifax linked customers to my fake phishing version of their site by accident
My guess was that they wanted to reduce the chance of news leaking before they announced it. If they're like other large companies I've seen from the inside, changes to the main website involve lots of meetings and lots of people/stakeholders.
