mjbeswick··on Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will'
People don't sell drugs to help people, they sell them to make easy money. That wouldn't be such a bad thing if drugs didn't destroy the live of so many people, and the lives of those around them. Not all drugs are so bad, and that is reflected in their classification under the Dangerous Drugs Act.

I can only assume that you or anyone you care about hasn't died or destroyed their life due to drug addition?

mjbeswick··on Microwaves and Alzheimer's Disease
Most likely correlation not causation. Amateur radio operators use a wide range of equipment and frequencies, so without know all factors such research means nothing. Many hobbyists solder the own electronics or have jobs in engineering, so there could be any number of other factors at play.
mjbeswick··on The hunt for Nigerians who can change into cats
From a US survey completed in 2020, 88% of people claimed to believe some religion. These beliefs aren't really any different from those featured in the article. Western religious beliefs are just as absurd; they are just more acceptable as they are part of our culture.
mjbeswick··on Microwave ovens and their hazards
One of the first uses of microwaves for heating was to humanly heat hamsters that had been cryogenically frozen.
mjbeswick··on Microwave ovens and their hazards
Cooking food by frying or grilling is probably much more of a health risk, not accounting for food being heated in plastic packaging.
mjbeswick··on Popular Tibetan singer Tsewang Norbu dies of self-immolation protest
This sort of protest only hurts the cause of Tibet, as it is a demonstration of extremism.

By most standards the only person that would set themselves on fire is a religious fanatic or someone suffering from mental illness.

mjbeswick··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
All the comments ignore the fact that until the industrial revolution people didn't sleeps a solid 8 hours a night, as in the past people used to practice polyphasic sleep. People used get up in the middle of night a socialise for a few hours before having their second sleep.

Most people have complete control over when they go to bed, as they choose a particular time to go to bed.

mjbeswick··on Medical student surgically implants Bluetooth into own ear to cheat in final
Most of the commenters clearly haven't heard of induction headsets!

In that case the implanted "device" would be a small magnet just inserted into the ear canal, while the bluetooth device is just an induction loop.

mjbeswick··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
I have been into fitness and bodybuilding for 20 years, and I cannot emphasis how true this is. Also not all exercise is equal in that walking isn't a good example of exercise. Humans are extremely efficient at walking, so it is poor at raising your heart rate and doesn't provide any resistance.
mjbeswick··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Exercise is important, but the befits taper off rapidly. A little exercise goes a long way, but more isn't incrementally better.

People need to stop referring to such a goal as weight loss, as what they are really talking about is fat loss.

Pro tip; if you want to lose weight most rapidly then don't eat! That works for 100% of people, as we are highly adapted to survive short periods of famine. What we are not adapted for is to have a limitless supply of calorie rich food which requires no effort to obtain; hence the obesity crisis!

mjbeswick··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Insulin isn't evil, it's a fantastic hormone which allows us to rapidly lower excess blood glucose and store excess carbs efficiently. It allows us to recover rapidly from exercise and make use of excess food in times of plenty.
mjbeswick··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
He might seems in good shape, but "having a massive sweet tooth" can lead to atherosclerosis; even if you aren't fat.
mjbeswick··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
Also healthy isn't universal. What is healthy for one person and not be for another!
mjbeswick··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
Even things that people don't usually associate with cancer have an impact, such as alcohol consumption, medication, oxidative stress caused by diet etc...
mjbeswick··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
Half of cancers in the developed world are due to lifestyle; so how you live has a huge impact in you chances of developing cancer. People often overlook other factors that increase your chances of developing cancer such as obesity, exposure to viruses, immunodeficiency, background radiation etc.

Humans are in quite an unlucky position when it comes to developing cancer, due to our relatively small size and long lifespan. Cancer doesn't affect smaller animals so much, as they generally don't live long enough for it to develop. Larger animals that live long lifespans aren't affected so much, such as elephants and whales.

mjbeswick··on Novak Djokovic wins appeal as Australian court quashes visa cancellation
He probably presents a very low risk; it's more the principle of not making exceptions to the rules for someone entering the country just to play tennis.

Couldn't he make the whole problem go away by just getting vaccinated!?

We don't use it because it would be expensive to make, and modern concrete is stronger (by as much as 5 times stronger!)

One of the reasons modern concrete fails is because steel reenforcement, as it corrodes and expands inside structures. Ancient buildings such as the Pantheon rely on compressive strength for support, so they last much longer. We could build building in this way, but it uses a lot of material and would be prohibitively expensive; especially since most building are not long term investments.

mjbeswick··on Cocaine Paraphernalia Ads in the 70s
It's a nice idea, but GHB really isn't safe.

While it's pretty hard to kill yourself with alcohol, but very easy using GHB. Even experienced users mess up with GHB, as it matters how much you are taking over time, and how much is being absorbed.

mjbeswick··on Cocaine Paraphernalia Ads in the 70s
You mention GHB, but as you mention to dosing in ml I expect you actually mean GBL.

It's really not as safe as you make out, as the dose needed to OD isn't much more than a recreational dose. When you overdose on GHB you can become aggressive, lose consciousness, lose all short term memories; and worse case fall into a coma and even die. The margin of error is just too small!

If you take GHB for a long time you can build up a tolerance and become dependant one it. The withdrawal is terrible and depending on how dependant some os can result in post acute withdrawal syndrome, in which case you can't just stop taking it as the result could be fatal.

mjbeswick··on Stop Telling Kids They’ll Die from Climate Change
The real problem is over population of which one of the side effect is climate change. The worlds population have increased 700% in the last 100 years, and still people fail to see this acknowledge this as the real problem.

Reducing the consumption of resources and CO2 emissions is crucial in reducing climate change, but is only treating the symptoms of the problem and not the root cause.

Human civilisation is completely unable to deal with any change to the sea level or climate, so any change likely trigger wars for better territory and arable land.

Exactly what policing problems!?
mjbeswick··on FBI raids researcher who discovered private patient data on public server (2016)
You clearly have no understanding of how the police work in European countries!
mjbeswick··on People who “drink to cope” can make their symptoms worse: study
Ethanol is metabolised in the primarily liver into acetaldehyde which slowly damages the liver, if you drink enough to process more your live can handle it will damage the live. It also leads to fatty liver disease which cause metabolic problems. Being fit and a healthy weight doesn't make much difference.

It's the same reason why a diet high in sugar cause the same problems; as sugar is 50% fructose which is metabolised by the live in the same way as ethanol.

mjbeswick··on People who “drink to cope” can make their symptoms worse: study
It's more the fact that alcohol is a depressant, so if you drink regularly enough you will feel when it's effects wear off. Benzodiazepine and GHB produce a similar kind of withdrawal.

mjbeswick··on For programmers, remote working is becoming the norm
It's about the same cost as commuting, so no difference!?
mjbeswick··on For programmers, remote working is becoming the norm
I've been working from home since last February, and since then I have been more productive and worked more hours than when I was in the office.

Open plan office are an absolute productivity killer for me, as they are noisy and distracting and really the worst environment possible for development! Working from home there are no distractions, so I'm able to concentrate far longer. For me it's pointless to commute three hours a day just to sit in an office and not speak to anyone, when I could use that time for other things (plus saving £3,500 a year on travel).

As someone who trains at the gym two hours a day most days, working from home allows me to train more and eat better. It absolutely great being able to cook and eat proper food in my own kitchen!

mjbeswick··on Once an Addict, Always an Addict?
Being overweight for any length of time can ruin you appetite and metabolism. Being overweight usually causes insulin resistance at some point, and develop into metabolic syndrome. Also continuous overeating down regulates the production of leptin which is produced when the stomach is full. Competitive eater have this issue, as when they eat they don't feel full so they are able to eat much more,
mjbeswick··on Once an Addict, Always an Addict?
Calories in is just a rough measure, as absorption is non-linier as you suggest.

The more you eat the less your body will absorb, as your digestive system will digest and absorb more of a 100Kcal meal that a 300Kcal meal. Also the more you consume higher your metabolic rate will be, while the converse it also true. Because of that you you have to restrict your calorie intake by a fair amount to lose weight, and overeat by so much to start gaining weight. Don't forget that all calories are not created equally, as some foods are digested better that others, and different combinations of fat, protein and carbohydrates will affect digestion. The addition of simple carbohydrates raise insulin which can also increase absorption, which is great for gaining weight and stimulating your appetite.
