mjbeswick··on iPhone 12 withdrawn from French market for non-compliance with EU regulation
People living longer and cancer being diagnosed and reported more are the reasons for higher cancer rates. The rates of all kinds of cancer have been rising. If it was being cause by radio waves you would expect it to be certain kinds of cancer. Radio waves from mobile phone don't penetrate flesh very far, so you would expect skin cancer to increase more than other cancers.

High power radio transmissions have been used since the 40s.

mjbeswick··on iPhone 12 withdrawn from French market for non-compliance with EU regulation
Or maybe because possibly interfering the operation of other electrical devices, that have only been tested to operate with certain levels of external interference; is a bad thing!
mjbeswick··on iPhone 12 withdrawn from French market for non-compliance with EU regulation
In what way do you think it is dangerous? Spoiler alert; it's not.

The main reason there are such power limits is because electrical devices are tested to withstand certain levels of interference from external sources.

Mobile phone vary their transmitting power depending on how close they are to the tower, so they do not jam other signals and it allows them to save power. Most of the time they are operating at a fraction of their peak power, where maximum power output is only used to ping towers when signal is lost.

mjbeswick··on Big effort needed on UK diet to fight ultra-processed food, say health experts
Meat is the most nutritious food you can eat, as it contains all the nutrients you need. There isn't any other food which compares to meat in that regard (with the exception of eggs).
mjbeswick··on Big effort needed on UK diet to fight ultra-processed food, say health experts
Processing is still significant, as it includes the use of food additives to extends the self life and maintain quality. Salt is also a big component, as it flavour enhancer.
mjbeswick··on Big effort needed on UK diet to fight ultra-processed food, say health experts
The reason many food contain added sugar is because that is what people choose to buy!

It's really easy to avoid sugar if you buy raw foods and actually cook, rather than convenience food. It's also cheaper. The solution is education.

There is no such thing as healthy food, only a diet which is healthy. You can eat so called healthy foods, but if you eat ecess calories your diet isn't healthy for you!

mjbeswick··on What’s more important as you age: stretching, balance work or strength training?
Cardiovascular exercise isn't the most beneficial, high intensity strength training is; as has all the benefits of cardio, whiles improving strength and working the whole body.
mjbeswick··on What’s more important as you age: stretching, balance work or strength training?
I have been a weight lifter for 20 years, practiced BJJ and dabbled in Yoga. Yoga practitioners really are not strong by any measure. It's a terrible form of exercise, although it is good for improving flexibility which is good if you take part in sports which require it.

Yoga poses that appear to require strength are simply balancing with locked muscles. You have to be light and flexible for such things, but it doesn't require any strength.

mjbeswick··on What’s more important as you age: stretching, balance work or strength training?
Not at all. Yoga doesn't get you heart rate up, require much strength or increase bone density. It does improve flexibility, but that really isn't much of a benefit on it's own.
mjbeswick··on Exxon bets carbon will be the new oil
There is historical data which suggests that there has been two ice ages in the time of modern humans. The climate only appears to be stable when observed over a short timespan.

I don't think there is any doubt that human activity is contributing to climate change.

It's ironic that modern civilization and population numbers aren't possible without fossil fuels, but their use will ultimately cause it's demise.

mjbeswick··on Exxon bets carbon will be the new oil
The irony is that people are forgetting where all that carbon came from in the first place, before plants captured it from the atmosphere!

Humans are contributing to climate change, but the climate had constantly changed throughout history. During the peak to the Roman empire, parts of the Mediterranean are estimated to have been 2°C hotter than today. The climate cooling is one of the likely contributing factors behind the collapse of the Roman empire, as agricultural output fell as a result.

Climate change is bad for current human settlement and farming, as what is currently primar land for living and farming will change. Such a charge would have dangerous global economic and political consequences.

mjbeswick··on Eating Disorder Helpline Disables Chatbot for Harmful Responses
It's going to be near on impossible to create a chatbot that cannot be manipulated into giving an answer which is user wants to hear. Even people are not completely immune to this.
mjbeswick··on Eating Disorder Helpline Disables Chatbot for Harmful Responses
I persons base metabolic rate doesn't vary that much. You will hear people claim to have a slow metabolism, but in reality it makes little difference.

Most people do not do enough physical activity for it to make much of a difference either.

mjbeswick··on Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?
The Surrey accent is close what most people most people consider middle class / standard English which is close to received pronunciation, but more natural sounding. In other areas other the country it's considered posh!?
mjbeswick··on New York City passes law barring weight discrimination
It depends on how you define tall. Logically there should be as many short people as tall people!

Fat people are discriminated against, but the question is how much should obesity be catered for, and what range in body size?

Alcoholics and drug addicts and are also discriminated against by society, so shouldn't these lifestyle choices also be protected by the law?

mjbeswick··on I was laid off in retaliation for anti-discrimination whistleblowing
It's just as possible that potential employers were put off by this personal personality and the HR issues they may present
mjbeswick··on I was laid off in retaliation for anti-discrimination whistleblowing
Many manager are reluctant of hiring members of certain minority groups, as they are afraid of the potential HR issues; as far too many people play the discrimination card when they are involved in any kind of conflict or face disciplinary action. Sometimes measure to prevent discrimination can do the opposite.
mjbeswick··on The Air Force has loosened its restrictions on body fat for new recruits
Such a person would be at a higher risk of many health issues, which the military would be responsible for providing care for and they might be a liability if a combat situation developed around them. They may also be seen as lacking in self discipline or having other negative personality traits.
mjbeswick··on The Air Force has loosened its restrictions on body fat for new recruits
I have a BMI of 35 (obese) but have been weight training for 20 years and have a low body fat percentage.

It works as a rough guide as it is easer to calculate than body fat percentage. Most people that go to the gym don't have much muscle; so unless someone is a dedicated bodybuilder or powerlifter it's good enough. You can tell just by looking at someone if they have large amounts of body fat!

mjbeswick··on Widow of BBC presenter who died from Covid vaccine sues AstraZeneca
Many more people die from taking over the counter pain killers ever year, but few people take any notice the death is a potential side-effect of paracetamol or Ibuprofen!
mjbeswick··on Widow of BBC presenter who died from Covid vaccine sues AstraZeneca
The problem is that side effects are massively over reported. I don't have the original source, but I came across a report on a double blind test of one of the COVID vaccines where 50% of the participants received the vaccine verses 50% who received a placebo (saline). I that particular study more than two thirds of the participants reported side effects. Unfortunately most of the time that people do report side effects they aren't real; which creates bias in society and the medical community.

Administering a vaccine to a large population is rather like the trolly problem, as to protect a large number of people you will have to risk a small number of casualties and deaths.

mjbeswick··on Why America’s Railroads Refuse to Give Their Workers Paid Leave
It's seem like such a far reaching issue that I'm surprised it hasn't triggered a general strike.
mjbeswick··on Why America’s Railroads Refuse to Give Their Workers Paid Leave
Rail companies are getting the blame here, but the real problem is that paid leave isn't a statutory employment right protected by law. Here in the UK full time employees are entitled to 28 day paid annual leave, although I have work for companies which offer more, while pay is seperate.
mjbeswick··on Quarter of 17-19-year-olds have probable mental disorder – study
If this is correct it is alarming to think that so many young people have a mental health disorder. Which begs the question: Is this really just over diagnosis, or are young people becoming ever less resilient?
