mitxela··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
It kind of is.

I know that because of all the reports of people going to their bank and complaining the app won't work on their phone, then getting it fixed.

Who is stopping me from strapping a Raspberry Pi to a battery pack? Nobody, that's a componentized market too.

Do they? What happens if you do the opposite of jury nullification and find someone guilty who's innocent?
mitxela··on Jury finds Facebook liable for deceiving users in Cambridge Analytica case
You'd have to individually prove that each person charged knew what was going on, and that could be difficult. And rightfully so.

And by the clever move of pitching itself as ride sharing between casual users, don't forget. If they were offering "call a taxi" from the start, the outcome may have been very different. People still say "call an Uber" and not "call a taxi with Uber".

It's not that simple, it's very difficult to prevent that from happening.

I say let them. They're not keeping us away from them - they're keeping themselves away from us, as it should be.

Google Maps has its own billing model.

That's every time Google does something bad to a customer. Such as the one who was banned for his son's medical photos. Or the one who was tricked into enabling passkeys and then couldn't sign in any more and called support.

Indeed, nobody here is asking for less bureaucracy in regard to this situation because it wouldn't solve anything.
mitxela··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Doesn't seem crazy to me. Which one do you suppose needs more proof of correctness: a cake recipe, or the oven you bake the cake in? The recipe has to be correct or the cake won't work, but the oven just has to hold a temperature.

Everyone knows that all technology newer than Windows 2.0 will never be obsolete!

That's so the one central point of air ingress is the one with the filter. Air still gets in - through the filter.

If there's no other burger joint in the small town it's the only place I can get burgers.

I agree Google is using a tax here but the rule you suggested doesn't work

Slavery: one party makes you pick cotton or you aren't allowed to eat or sleep.

Not slavery: one party makes you supply widgets or you aren't allowed to eat or sleep. Another party gives you widgets for picking cotton.

We should all be happy to participate in the not slavery society, right? We should all feel great because we aren't slaves.

The app store is full of crappy and malicious software though. Why pay them for something they aren't doing anyway?
mitxela··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
it's actually Google being parasitic on all the apps' infra. I paid for the app store infra when I bought my phone, and every time I open it and see ads, and with my tracking data for the NSA. They don't need to be allowed to quadruple dip.

You're free to make one, and bank apps are often less locked down than you think - try them yourself instead of accepting possible FUD. Also your bank 100% has a checkbox on your account they can click to disable any phone hardware requirements on your account.

They can treat their customers like livestock because their customers are okay with it. Why is that?

My hypothesis: turkeys think the farm is an amazing life until the week before Thanksgiving. Nobody really groks that Google is shit until it's too late.

Google lets these forks do anything they want except things that take away money from Google.

This definition doesn't work, because my only choice when buying a burger at Dairy Queen is to pay the burger's price or walk away too, but it's not taxation.
mitxela··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
How do you define taxation?

Right but they didn't want to stop air coming in. They just wanted all incoming air to be filtered.

mitxela··on Google's orbital AI data center test packs four TPUs and 1,000W of solar power
what a nothing burger. This is only enough to power a government spy satellite, which is surely what this is actually an excuse for. A chatbot data center will need orders of magnitude more than that.

I didn't understand the purpose as pressurising the structure. I understood the purpose as ventilating the interior, providing a central place to attach a filter, and preventing air from coming in from other places.

Factorio's sprite approach uses hundreds of MB of PNG files and several GB of VRAM for what could've been less than 10MB of textured triangles.
