mitjak··on Steve Wozniak Shares How the Name "Apple" Came About
Or, you know, fall on your head.
mitjak··on Hell Freezes Over As MySpace Fully Surrenders To Facebook
Hang on, let me crank up the article title drama wheel. Ah snap, it's already at 11.
mitjak··on Steve Wozniak: Android will be the dominant smartphone platform
Flash support will "kill" the iPhone why exactly?
mitjak··on The Importance of Abandoning Crap
I don't know how far any of those projects went but the descriptions alone don't sound like crap at all.
mitjak··on The Importance of Abandoning Crap
That was a lesson in itself though, wasn't it? Perhaps, armed with that knowledge you can go on to make something much greater and more interesting. Consider it a lesson in crap quitting.
mitjak··on Tenacious C: Cool C IDE
Indeed. Its UI is almost exactly what my professor drew out on the blackboard during the pointers introduction. Still took a while to sink in though.
mitjak··on Reddit’s Astonishing Altruism
By comparison of what? Reddit is not composed of typical people mentioned above? Or do all regular folk gather round to share Impact captioned cartoons of homosexual sheep riding bicycles through fields of scrotums?
mitjak··on Google Buzz User Privacy Litigation Class Action Settlement Website
Two dollars is still two dollars.
mitjak··on Leaked DVD Screener of The Social Network A BitTorrent Hit
I don't think you understand his argument fully: he would like to be able to do it the legal way, but it is simply not possible at the moment. In other words, there is demand which is currently filled only by the illegal channels. While it isn't the most noble way to go about it, it's the only option possible in his case. Compare that to iTunes, for instance: music available at greater convenience than through torrents and the like. Or to games: an easy worry free download versus having to look for ways to obtain the game, wait for it to download, and often mess about with copyright protection.
mitjak··on A Hidden Genius at the Apple Store
Objection. Look at first generation iMac G5s which had the entire back panel come off granting access to practically every part of the logic board, followed by the next generation G5s that only offered user upgradeable RAM to the C2D intel iMacs only offering an upgradeable RAM slot. Consider also the removable battery of the pre-unibody laptops compared to the built-in one on the unibody MacBooks.

Progress is relative depending on what you want out of your machine. I want matte 16 bit screens back.

mitjak··on Goodbye, MacBook Pro. The New MacBook Air Is That Good.
I have 10.10 installed on my MacBook Pro, and I can confirm the 1-5 are no longer an issue :) (resuming from sleep takes at least 2-3 times longer for me than on OS X though). I don't know enough to confirm 6, but if that is also covered then 7 should be as well.
mitjak··on Windows Phone 7: The Ars Review
Its inexcusable if the original Zune doesn't have a track scrobbler like all media players are supposed to but WP7 doesn't.
mitjak··on Adobe Illustrator → HTML5 Canvas. Free.
Dang, you're right.
mitjak··on [dead]
That's how it is right now.
mitjak··on Ask HN: Inspirational money making web apps made by hackers.
Oh boy, I love Lighthouse (worked for Bluenotion over the summer). Pure joy to use!
mitjak··on Ask HN: Inspirational money making web apps made by hackers.
But hopefully not the same colour scheme and general site layout ?!
mitjak··on The Dream Is Over: Music Labels Have Killed Their Digital Future
..except availability on Spotify of their catalogue is not artists' business but their label's, regardless of degree of indie-ness.

My attitude is the complete opposite: "I can listen to Madonna but not to Tallest Man on Earth, who is from Sweden? Kthxbye".

mitjak··on [dead]
Really?? It took a simple blog post for someone to go "hmmmm" about over there? Not to sound like a complete ass, but, just like with eBay, I vastly prefer using your iPhone app to using the web interface due to its (relative) simplicity, and even that I only do because I can't write a review directly from the iPhone app and must finalize it on a real computer.

Speaking of that, why on earth can I only write drafts on mobile devices and not submit reviews? I'm just as likely to write a drunk or extremely pissed review regardless of the device I'm typing on. If anything, waiting until I get to a computer makes me instil the reviews with more sarcasm than I would in the spur of the moment on a mobile device.

mitjak··on The Dream Is Over: Music Labels Have Killed Their Digital Future
Spotify is great as long as you don't step out of the narrow scope of the music offered. Try finding anything released <6 months ago and report back. rdio and MOG are even worse in that respect. Grooveshark is the only service that has a decent though a Kazaa-like chaotic catalogue.
mitjak··on ShoutKey - Temporary URL Shortener by jazzychad
Now the hardest part to pronounce becomes "shoutkey" itself :)
mitjak··on Sparrow - The New Mail for Mac
I'm completely ignorant about that. Are mail clients that problematic? Mail.app seems to do a good job at link detection.
mitjak··on Sparrow - The New Mail for Mac
Like for some others here, something feels off about the design. I think it's that the app feels a bit like an iOS app running natively on OS X: the icons on the left and at the bottom, the iOS mail app-style listing, and the tooltips that look reminiscent of the copy/paste menu. Not to say it's bad; it's just a somewhat confusing user experience, as if I'm running an iOS app with the Parallels like "unity mode" enabled.
mitjak··on Sparrow - The New Mail for Mac
> No option for plain text composing.

You just prevented me from downloading this: none of the professors at my university allow non-plaintext email, and will ignore any HTML email that is sent.

I always thought HTML emails are for newsletters anyway?

mitjak··on Something, Something, Something, Detroit
I was in Detroit a few weeks ago during the jazz festival, the first American city to be visited under my US visa (I'm permanent resident in Canada). It was beautiful and shocking in a very post-apocalyptic way every Fallout fan has dreamt of: at noon on a Saturday the streets were completely abandoned. We rode the People Mover with 2 other people, looking at gorgeous art-deco monuments to capitalism. At the shoreline we met visitors of the festival, most of whom were tourists.

The only busy areas of the city were the casinos where we almost suffocated from the ubiquitous fog of cigarette smoke. Overall it was very interesting but largely as abandoned as what you described.

mitjak··on MIT Video lectures - Introduction to Algorithms
Not to hijack the thread too much, but are there good resources on learning about algorithm correctness, complexity, recurrence relations, automata and proving techniques? At the moment I'm not doing so well in the proof by induction department, and the course material at UToronto is quite lousy.
mitjak··on Google URL shortener available to the public
Google Maps uses it. Thank goodness.
mitjak··on End of the Road for Xmarks
What do you mean by Google? Google Bookmarks, the Chrome sync? Google Notebook? :)
mitjak··on End of the Road for Xmarks
Ditto here but I can't think of a way to bring those bookmarks over to Safari to sync with the iPhone, aside from using Xmarks. Any ideas?
mitjak··on The sad truth about Facebook
I am mesmerized by the anthology of well-used analogies and metaphors.
mitjak··on Courtney Love does the math (2000)
Assuming she is thy smart, I do wonder why she won't let go of the 1997 version of herself and evolve, at least artistically.
