misterdoubt··on “Python's batteries are leaking”
I'd bet that absorbing Requests into the standard library, no matter the particular method of absorption proposed, would present too much of a political challenge to overcome.

Curating packages for quality across multiple versions and architectures is hard work. In addition to Enthought (mentioned earlier), Anaconda maintains a curated set.
misterdoubt··on Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter
Making the code more clear to read helps its quality come through. Or its lack thereof.
misterdoubt··on Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter
Format on save. Failing that, format as part of your normal tox run. Failing that, pre-commit hook.
misterdoubt··on Influencers Are Abandoning the Instagram Look
That's pretty typical, because the "generational" stereotypes are nearly entirely nonsense. What percentage of "Generation X" actually went around wearing flannel and rolling their eyes all day? How many Boomers actually wore tie dye every day, smoked pot, and lived in free love communes?

Generational characterizations exist solely to sell books, write silly columns, and make older people feel justified when they dismiss and disrespect the younger people.

Yeah, Europe has never heard of hazing or bullying.

If you care to check, the U.S. is not an outlier when it comes to general crime rates. Your entire rant is based on ideological phobia and invented premises.

Yes! Semver is very precisely specified and the specification ain't very long. How on Earth could they mess it up?
misterdoubt··on The Invigorating Strangeness of Friedrich Nietzsche
A serious reader of Nietzsche should, at a minimum, read Kaufmann's foundational book.

If you want a single source for a "correct interpretation" (a term that's hard to take seriously), read that book.

misterdoubt··on The Invigorating Strangeness of Friedrich Nietzsche
> my strong overall impression was that he essentially despised all that went before him,

He didn't think well of the state of European philosophy, but "despised all that went before him"? Not at all. He didn't think very highly of his contemporaries working in European philosophy (and politics), but was deeply embedded in classical philology.

> rejected Western values of good and evil (obviously, and as some here do)

That's a broad brush. To use a slightly narrower brush, he starts from the (by no means unique!) position that no God is the source of morality in the world.

> and left the reader with nothing beyond the essence of an Aleister Crowley "do what thou wilt" disregard for the idea of objective good and evil.

Sigh. At the heart of Nietzsche's philosophical project are attempts to re-ground morality on something other than the crumbling foundations of 'Western values.' He gave you a dozen books with which you can think along with him and try to solve that problem.

If you can't get more than 'do what you want' from reading Nietzsche, that's not his failing.

misterdoubt··on The Invigorating Strangeness of Friedrich Nietzsche
Cherry-picking sentences out of a famously enigmatic writer is a disservice to both his thought and your own.

Cold mountain air, yes. Or, as he himself put it:

  Ice

  Yes! I manufacture ice:
Ice may help you to digest.
If you had much to digest,
how you would enjoy my ice!
Nietzche's poetry is an underappreciated component of his philosophy.

The article seems to disagree with your point about open source funding:

> Right now my goal is to get a handful of medium sized grants from larger companies to support my work on crates.io. If you work for a company that might be interested in helping sponsor me, please reach out.

If that's a financially viable proposition, that speaks well of large companies supporting individuals on open source projects, no?

misterdoubt··on Ruby's Creed
It certainly reads that way. The author takes "programmer happiness" very personally here.
misterdoubt··on Reducing notification permission prompt spam in Firefox
I don't see how this issue has much to do with "fairness." There's no reason that any organization must treat its audiences identically.

Well, as always, a certification is only as good as its certifier.

> Not when the beginning of the code block isn't on screen.

The length of your code blocks terrify me. :)

misterdoubt··on Hyphenation in CSS
It adds considerable value if the goal is not more than getting some words on the screen" but rather "how is the best way I can possibly present this textual document."

Personally, I find a very small proportion of text to fall into the latter category. But for those that do, clean presentation is huge.

misterdoubt··on Hyphenation in CSS
For basic hyphenation of text paragraphs, it's been years since I felt the need to intervene in (La)Tex hyphenation.

For typesetting more broadly, certainly. For making a clean right edge, no.
