misterdoubt··on Amazon Echo Buds
Yes. In fact, I think it has to be connected to some other device with the Alexa app.

>Hands-free with Alexa – Echo Buds work with the Alexa app to stream music, play Audible audiobooks, make calls, or get directions—just ask.

misterdoubt··on Goodhart’s Law: Are Academic Metrics Being Gamed?
No, that's reasonable. Look at is this way: the modal category of authors is the group that has published one paper. The next-largest group published two. And so on.

It's a very very small overall percentage of authors that publish more than one paper per year!

misterdoubt··on A patent lawsuit against GNOME
At least there's self-awareness here.
misterdoubt··on Ask HN: Do you read HN while on holiday? Isn't it 'work'?
I also work on holiday.
misterdoubt··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
I guess I don't know enough Perl to understand how this differs dramatically from something like SQLAlchemy in Python.

misterdoubt··on Inkscape 1.0 Beta 1
$50 is not $50 when it also requires Windows or Mac to even function.
misterdoubt··on Asciicker – an online 3D game demo rendering to ASCII text
And so I set off into a seemingly endless ocean.

I'll let you know if I reach new vistas.

Mind moderately blown.
misterdoubt··on Inkscape 1.0 Beta 1
I learned enough TikZ for a project to create a pretty wide range of generic flowcharts/diagrams.

Now I'm no longer using TeX daily and kind of regret boxing myself in.

I find that I'm either working with teams that are 100% "TeX all the way" or 0% "please no."

misterdoubt··on Inkscape 1.0 Beta 1
I want to mess with vector graphics about twice a year, and I do essentially zero visual work beyond that.

Every time I'm pleased at how easy Inkscape makes it. And it's completely smooth on both Linux and Windows.

misterdoubt··on Colorado Town Offers 1 Gbps for $60 After Years of Battling Comcast
I'm in the wealthiest county in my state in the U.S. and the best I can get is $50/mo for spotty ~12mbit hotspot service with 95% uptime that I have to physically restart every other day when it craps out entirely...

It theoretically has a data cap at 50 gb but it isn't enforced.

misterdoubt··on Firefox moving to 4 week releases

Yeah, you should probably hold off on the bug report.

misterdoubt··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
Judging from the balance in this thread I'd say he's still extremely employable.
misterdoubt··on Drawbacks of Python
To be fair, it also highlights a benefit of Python 2.2 over 2.1. (I.e., improvements made in the language eighteen years ago.)
misterdoubt··on Driving an Ambulance in the Age of Narcan
Yes, junkies overdosing in public are well-known for their legal acumen.
misterdoubt··on Top Programming Languages 2019
If you hand-write your jpegs, I'll not argue if you want to call yourself a programmer.

Also "1 room left at this price!"

Maybe... at this exact price. Maybe the next available will be higher. Maybe not.

misterdoubt··on TSV Utilities: Command line tools for large, tabular data files
Must be nice to start work with clean data. Allow me to assure you that there are many, many others who don't have the luxury.
misterdoubt··on Apple contractors listened to 1k Siri recordings per shift: former employee
Well... the best way to predict text messages is to read lots and lots of text messages.

The difference is that predicting the next word in a text message can be validated without direct human intervention. It takes a human to tell whether Siri interpreted the voice command correctly. It just takes more data to evaluate next-word predictive systems.

misterdoubt··on Show HN: Scarf – Platform to help open-source developers monetize their work
I can't imagine using a package on this system as a dependency at all.

Not even bringing Mallory in. Just the ordinary use case of "Hi, my app is free or pay... and dep #1 is free or pay and dep #2 is free or pay and dep #3 is free or pay so now you have some choices."

misterdoubt··on After September 18th, you’ll no longer be able to send messages on YouTube
Nope. It only has your public videos -- no private, no unlisted.
misterdoubt··on Show HN: Scarf – Platform to help open-source developers monetize their work
Make it first-party, then. At least for your landing page. I don't expect to have to load third-party scripting from a commerce website just to be able to see something other than a blank screen.
misterdoubt··on A dream of an ultimate OS (1995)
You might have been using Linux wrong, but there are also better and worse hardware choices and distro choices. There are laptops with friendly hardware that you can run anything on; there are some that will fight anything but their original OS.

I have been running Linux daily at home because it's been rock solid for years on my home laptops. And that has involved plenty of media consumption.

I used to dual boot, but on the latest I couldn't untangle Windows from 100% disk usage and failed Windows Updates -- this on a laptop that was literally a few weeks old. So long, Windows.

misterdoubt··on Crispr pioneer among University of California researchers boycotting Elsevier
Right.

To avoid the confusion, I should have emphasized the lack of publisher as marker of high quality. A Sage journal or an Elsevier journal is probably better than random-publisher-I've-barely-heard-of... but I'd never heard of a field where publisher specifically was a criterion for paper/citation-counting.

misterdoubt··on MesaPy: A Memory-Safe Python Implementation based on PyPy (2018)
3.6 releases are "beta quality," which I agree is very usable but not "fully ready." as per grandparent.
