mirntyfirty··on Ohio State University secures trademark for use of the word 'THE' on clothing
I don’t see a reason that they should be prevented from doing so.
mirntyfirty··on Misplaced Crypto Schadenfreude
If only rdbms had the hype levels it deserves.
mirntyfirty··on Where are all the crypto use cases?
That’s what I get for not verifying headlines.
mirntyfirty··on Where are all the crypto use cases?
It was interesting how quickly the cloud providers got rid of their block chain offerings.
mirntyfirty··on Solend seized $170M of user funds
I thought the whole point of crypto was to help the unbanked, save us from the evils of fiat, provide anonymous decentralized transparency that protected users, and serve as a hedge against inflation or market turmoil. /s
mirntyfirty··on Why former Amazon engineers hate the company with a passion?
Not an expert on these types of things but I think that there’s this notion of a type A personality that gets overly glorified in the self-help and corporate productivity realms...at least from what I’ve noticed. I’ve found it to be silly though because I’ve also noticed top workers that are perfectly calm, easy to talk to, and not competitive in the slightest.

And yes, these types of subjective things can be argued eternally but these have been my observations and experience.

mirntyfirty··on Why former Amazon engineers hate the company with a passion?
The healthy places I’ve worked have had a variety of personalities and personality types. Some of the people could be considered type B or less productive, but were great communicators that had an endless supply of tasks to do that they were quite competent at. As such, they provided great support to their teams and improved the culture.
mirntyfirty··on Bitcoin slumps below key $20k threshold
Does it incorporate microdistributed PoV (Proof of value) that can only be obtained through QHC (quantum hash cryptography), offering the best path to FEV (fiat escape velocity)? /s
mirntyfirty··on US prison workers produce $11B worth of goods and services for little to no pay
If this is clear....where is the evidence?
mirntyfirty··on US prison workers produce $11B worth of goods and services for little to no pay
The value they create doesn’t reduce the public fund contributions.
mirntyfirty··on Battered Crypto Hedge Fund Three Arrows Capital Considers Asset Sales, Bailout
To me it seems that way. With the bond market being so low, it seemed as though there was a lot of cash looking for some sort of outlet. All that was necessary was misleading hype and marketing.
mirntyfirty··on Federal Reserve raises rates by 0.75%
Overall it’s gone down but seems as though a lot of the big drops are followed by smaller surges of buying.
mirntyfirty··on Federal Reserve raises rates by 0.75%
It seems as though the dip buying will continue but perhaps the fed wants a smoother road back to reality.
mirntyfirty··on The State of Stablecoin Risks
I’d replace mass hysteria with moments of clarity. Interest rates rising will motivate investors to purchase more bonds and limit the speculative tendencies that propped up the crypto marketplace.
mirntyfirty··on The European central bank is trapped
If I read it correctly this is mentioned with the caveat that the federal reserve can adjust monetary policy to address that whereas the individual European countries mentioned are unable to.
mirntyfirty··on FTC acts against private equity firm’s acquisition of veterinary clinics
True although some of the large PE firms do their best to hide the affiliation.
mirntyfirty··on Finally, no bid on mortgage-backed securities
If I had to guess, there’s probably a lot of sfh as well.
mirntyfirty··on Neural networks 'learn' the way humans do? A neuroscientist explains why not
The comparisons are nothing short of insane. The best models and datasets come well short of justifying even an infinitesimal representation of intelligence.

It’s quite concerning too that there seems to be this belief that one can be effective in this field with a weak math background. I recall a meeting with a consultant claiming that they could improve order flow by using ML with a data set that was small and inaccurate. Their background was an mba and a few years of working on mergers and acquisitions.

mirntyfirty··on ZeroStableCoin is out from stealth mode
The next few years will see a sharp decline in liquidity that will decrease speculation compared to the last 10 years.
mirntyfirty··on Do Kwon in more trouble
Bermuda has a lot of reinsurance that I know of. What insurance are you referring to?
mirntyfirty··on How Software Companies Die (1995) [pdf]
Possibly the 2 most popular softwares in the world I’d claim
mirntyfirty··on Privacy Badger is a browser extension that learns to block invisible trackers
I think he meant advertising plus all the tracking that goes on.
mirntyfirty··on Faced with scooter seizures, Bird pays property tax bill months late
These scooters are not part of any solution, but rather the result of a successful brainstorming session to determine what money-losing idea can receive investment money. In theory, they are a practical way to travel 0-3 miles while overpaying, not being able to bring much, and introducing high risk of personal injury. Bicycles fit these use-cases much better.
mirntyfirty··on Ask HN: New job at BigCo. Everything has friction
I think that working at a bank is fantastic so long as a person can internalize the good parts.

The bank I was at had the best data practices of any company I’ve worked at by a mile. They wouldn’t hesitate to write huge checks to make sure that the hardware systems and teams supporting those systems were perfect. Software management was a bit procedural but the results were consistent and high quality.

mirntyfirty··on Tim Hortons app violated laws in collection of ‘vast amounts’ of location data
Is this because it automatically becomes possible to obtain location when accessing Bluetooth?
mirntyfirty··on I disabled WiFi on the new Samsung fridge
I’d just want to know who on earth would want such data and what insights could be gained from it. It can be challenging to build models with tons of really good data.
mirntyfirty··on Sick of Windows but can't afford a Mac? The cynic's guide to desktop Linux
I think nowadays they are close to impossible to put together and the article is directed towards the general public.
mirntyfirty··on What would a recession mean for developers?
Unless it’s a “junior” developer with 5 years of experience willing to “wear multiple hats” and “go the extra mile to deliver requirements.”
mirntyfirty··on An autonomous car in SF blocked a fire truck responding to an emergency
Proof by strawman imaginary counter-example
mirntyfirty··on My Stance on Toxicity About Programming Languages
It seems as though HN likes certain languages but gets pretty negative about others.
