minkzilla··on Bayer is getting rid of bosses and asking staff to ‘self-organize’
I have had a good manager and here are some concrete examples. He thought it was important to deliver what we promised so he would work with us to get good estimates and would then bring those outside our team and argue for a reasonable time/scope. He would deflect stupid requests (add AI to our project that had no reason for it). In my four years working under him he got us two off cycle inflation adjustments by going to HR and telling them to retain good talent in software we need to pay more.

Political problems are much harder to solve than technical ones.
minkzilla··on So you want to abolish time zones (2015)
The thing that would probably be in the lookup table would be official government business hours or something of that nature. It could also be schools, shops, or restaurants. That gives you a good idea of when "daytime" has started regardless of if it is winter or summer.

minkzilla··on Ice-free summers in Arctic possible within next decade, scientists say
Well, we have had a great winter in Utah this year and last year, average temperatures and all time record amounts of snow. I am not a denier of human caused climate change but winters disappearing in a decade is not true, at least broadly.
minkzilla··on Why is the mouse cursor slightly tilted and not straight?
It is not a good thing because it is interest free and inflation exists. If you would have had that money earlier you could have put it in high yield saving account or payed down debt.

It also completely ignores the personal aspect of value. If I lived next door to my sister that is value for me since she can watch the kids if I need to run out for something but she won't do that for anyone else. Likewise sentimental value, a 4th generation home can influence people's price a lot.
minkzilla··on US Smartphone Shipments Decline 19% in Q3 2023 as More Americans Delay Upgrade
I am on mint mobile (an MVNO of t-mobile) for 5gb a month for $15. I think you have to do 6 months at a time to get the $15 a month but that isn't a big deal. My service is good but does suffers when I go places that are really crowded but that doesn't bother me.
minkzilla··on Immanuel Kant – What can we know?
I think this is akin to asking "why study computer science when you can just think it up yourself". The answer being you won't even have anywhere to start and you certainly will write bad software if someone did give you a computer to type away on. The field of computer science is much younger and smaller than philosophy.

minkzilla··on Big landlords are colluding to raise rents, D.C. lawsuit alleges
Do you have to be successful in price fixing for it to be illegal or is just trying to price fix enough? That is a serious question - I do not know.
minkzilla··on Big landlords are colluding to raise rents, D.C. lawsuit alleges
I think that is a good question. I am not 100% but I do think you could take the algorithm to extremes and it does matter.

Algorithm A - professionally_evaluated_price + inflation

Algorithm B - average_price_of_cohort_you_agreed_to_join + 0.01

The first algorithm is super simple and is conceivably how many landlords might do it anyway and is based on value of your goods. Everyone using it wouldn't raise prices or hurt consumers. The second algorithm is basically agreeing with a cohort that you will never undercut each other and slowly raise prices. This obviously hurts renters and raises prices.

minkzilla··on The Case of a Curious SQL Query
And if you make a function with with a volatility level of stable it does a One-Time Filter. So you will either get 0 or 1000000

minkzilla··on iOS 17 is available today
Apple does however continue to provide security updates, they released a security update for ios 15 earlier this year. As an iphone 8 user this is perfectly fine for me. My phone works great and none of this new stuff is something I can't live without.

minkzilla··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
You said "I'd guess 99% of the population makes a phone last 2-4 years." Which is obviously false if the average is 3 years. An interesting data point neither of these articles have is the standard deviation. One of the articles says 8% of people wait more than 5 years.
minkzilla··on “Is There a God?” By Bertrand Russell
Yes but what else do we have? Indirect experience seems even more error prone
minkzilla··on “Is There a God?” By Bertrand Russell
Why is it unknowable? Just because we do not know yet doesn't seem to me to be conclusive evidence that it is unknowable.

I also think some would argue that being omniscient god has the "bandwidth" to care about everything and everyone. So in one sense everyone is special, which of course means no one is special but does not mean that our actions would be inconsequential.

minkzilla··on Senators to Propose Ban on U.S. Lawmakers, Executive Branch Members Owning Stock

minkzilla··on Money, the Unit of Caring (2009)
There are two other aspects I can think of as well. One is that burnout in work. I don’t think I could work 2-4 hours more a week for years without massive diminishing returns. Volunteering building homes is a positive use of my time for others and help me not burnout so I can keep doing both!

The other and more important is relationships. I could work more and get payed more (I’m salaried so I wouldn’t actually be payed more but hypothetically if I did) and donate that for someone to build homes but it changes the dynamic of relationship and I’m missing from it. I’ve advised people I’ve worked with and for on college, software, or even just how home loans work. And the fact I’m doing all this for free for them is meaningful for both of us, probably even more so than a mediocre handrail I added to the stairway

Isn't the temperature the "injected" randomness? The way I imagine it would be somewhere in the model you would do

input += (Math.random - 0.5) * Coefficient * temperature

so setting temperature to 0 would mean no randomness. On thinking further about why there is inherent randomness I believe it is from a lack of associativity in floating point operations. They obviously do A LOT of parallel floating point operations.
