millzlane··on Air Force unit suspends use of Sig Sauer pistol after shooting death of airman
Dont all guns have a small chance of accidental discharge? Improper handling and ignoring the firearm safety rules is not something I regularly do.
millzlane··on Air Force unit suspends use of Sig Sauer pistol after shooting death of airman
I've had one since before the military adopted it. I've been carrying it for years daily. It has never once went off on its own. I run with it, jump with it, have carried it in a small cross body bag. It has never just fired by itself. I have over 5k rounds through it.

The only time my gun has went off was when I pulled the trigger. Has your gun ever went off without pulling the trigger?

Most of the videos I see on YouTube are people who were fiddling with the gun, in some kind of physical altercation, or carry some sort of back on the side they carry. I didn't get the fix from Sig either.

millzlane··on The Hamburger Menu Is No Longer a Hamburger Menu
It's called the Kebab menu now. I'm a fan of chicken.

Seriously though, I know I'm getting old. But I feel like it's younger designers that didn't grow up using old interfaces. I don't like the switch to this new paradigm where every app has to recreate the wheel with their UX.

millzlane··on An Indoor Beehive in My Bedroom Wall
This was a cool read. Thanks for sharing.reminds me of the first time I saw a beehive as a city boy. It was a indoor wall hive at the West River UM summer camp near DC.
millzlane··on I started with a SQL question. He said "that's a dumb question."
It's not my <insert company name>. Has been my mantra lately. If I mention that a quarterly update cycle for mission critical software is too long in the context of security and the desktop enginners don't agree...I just repeat my mantra. I did recently develop a fix to a stupid bug a company said was working as expected. So I don't always stick to the mantra. But I'll disagree once. But then I commit to whatever management wants no matter how boneheaded. They're smart enough to see their dumb idea failed without me rubbing their noses in it.
millzlane··on Espanso – Cross-Platform Text Expander Written in Rust
Espanso looks promising but Atext (paid) fits niche very nicely for me.

With atexts gui it makes building new entries easy. I even have a keyboard shortcut to use highlighted text to quickly make a new entry.

I have used it to write emails, make automation's for certain websites that take keyboard shortcuts. I use it to build query searches for certain websites I use frequent (kinda like firefox back in the day).

millzlane··on Has anyone used Proton Business Suite rather than Google's for a startup?
Just use it everyday and you'll be good.
millzlane··on Has anyone used Proton Business Suite rather than Google's for a startup?
Yea, my dumbass used Google voice as my main 2fa number and recently lost access to it. Can't get it back and I'm locked out of everything. Don't be like me. Google really can't be trusted for personal or business use. If I could talk to a human and pay $100 for it I would.
millzlane··on Ask HN: Are Google products broken on Firefox for you?
If it works in chrome but not Firefox it could be a profile issue with Firefox. Goto About:profiles in the address bar and create a new profile and see if the issue persists in the new profile. Mozilla forums would be a good place to check also.
millzlane··on Only 5.3% of US welders are women. After years as a professor, I became one
It's never in fun. I don't mind a good razzing. But when it's constant or every day or you're the only one razzed because people like laughing at your no nonsense attitude when you get riled up at their stupidity it's like living in a courtroom of idiocracy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfifauG93ZU
millzlane··on The truth about latchkey kids
It depends. In elementary school my younger brother and I took a public transit bus to school. It was out of necessity or my mother wouldn't have been able to work two jobs without us being latch key kids. We knew how to iron our clothes, cook breakfast on a stove and use a fry daddy for chicken nuggets and fries. Often times we were only latchkey kids in the morning and after school would walk to our aunts or grandmoms and wait for mom after work.

We were largely unsupervised in Baltimore. Was it a good thing that we were autonomous and had the freedom to make mistakes without a guarding there to ensure they were responsible for our mistake..? Maybe. But I don't think any bad came from being a latchkey kid. IMO, SHTF in a kid's teenage years. I think it's way more important to be supervised in the pre-teen/teen years than a youner years. Simply because teenagers get into way more mischief that young kids.

As someone who started their career in an office environment, then went to grunt work, and now back in an office and a remote WFH job. I don't think it would be a struggle. Would it be different? Of course... physical labor is the complete opposite of office work. Would it be harder than sitting in a chair pressing buttons?... sure. But it wouldn't be a struggle. It would be more of a struggle working with people that don't understand what context is or what nuances are.

It's not the work or the culture, it's the people. The type that would call you a vagina for wanting water on a hot day to avoid dehydration. Or the boss that will tell you "you think too much" when you come to them with an idea that increases productivity. But ya, the work or culture would be a piece of cake to navigate. For me, often time it's the idiots you have to work with that usually make a place a shit place to work.

millzlane··on CHP seizes cars after Bay Bridge sideshow with Flock Security data
Traffic alerts used to be a real problem. They still do broadcast it on A.M. radio. But now in my state it's posted all online. You can see just about everything closures and all down to the lane and mile marker and even cameras of your route you can see streams of.
millzlane··on CHP seizes cars after Bay Bridge sideshow with Flock Security data
Honestly this is one of the most passive ways to try to combat it but living in a city with shot spotter (Baltimore) I don't think it will be very effective. Police will still have to travel to the scene.

Now get one of those spy planes in the air, and I think you'll shut that shit down quick.

millzlane··on CHP seizes cars after Bay Bridge sideshow with Flock Security data
I understand what you're saying, but if the government shuts down a road partially or even fully, it's usually not because they just want to be dicks.

In high-school we met in the biggest and barren parking lots or industrial parks we could find and do it there. But in the last 10-15 years being driven away from private lots (Rightfully so), the only place people can do it (whenever they want), is large intersections and highways. I don't like or agree with it. But I suspect that is part of the reason sideshows have now culminated in streets being taken over. We still do money nights once in a while but it's a smaller group and it's not advertised on social media and we go to empty roads outside of the city or in the industry parks with newly paved roads into the place. The race track is good too but it's only open friday-monday for stuff like that (mostly drag racing) but not a lot of spinning tires or drifting.

At the risk of sounding old and cranky I'm inclined to agree with you. The story made me smile no doubt. But I was not expecting a public transportation story.
