mildweed··on Microformats are easy to learn, and pay off well in SEO and mobile
I would like to see the W3C adopt more microformats into HTML5.
mildweed··on [dead]
--removed--
mildweed··on [dead]
Domain purchased 7/30/2012. This is 2 days old. This does not sound like a well-thought-out Big Idea.
mildweed··on [dead]
Is keeping your site traffic-spike-proof important? Apparently Not.
mildweed··on Here’s to the PHP Misfits
The advantage is that this guy, who otherwise wouldn't have been able to accomplish his goals, did. He did because PHP was accessible. And till other languages are as dead-simple to accomplish small-to-medium tasks, PHP will continue to have fans such as the OP.
mildweed··on The True Problem With PHP
That's the proposal.
mildweed··on The True Problem With PHP
I propose this wiki content reside on https://wiki.php.net/

Sure, the page self-declares that it is "mainly used to track internal development of the PHP project", but its a wiki. We can change that.

mildweed··on Calling PHP functions with named parameters
Wordpress should upgrade wp_parse_args to use this Gist.
mildweed··on "X-" deprecated for HTTP headers
So, now we in the community need a clearinghouse to declare new HTTP headers. Let me be the first: Comment.

  <?php
  header('Comment: some context on why this reply happened');
  ?>
mildweed··on Bill Murray on taking chances and saying "No"
This guy should take an intro level improv comedy class. If BFM's quote was that inspiring to him, he's got a lot of learning yet to do.

As a comedian and an entrepreneur, I can say there are many overlaps between the two, and the willingness to take bold steps is just one of them. Another is to trust your team members. Another is to build on others' ideas, not tear them down. And many more.

mildweed··on Yottaa Gets $9M for "Anti-Lean" Startup Approach
I use Yottaa as a band-aid for inherited websites at my agency. When a client comes to us, asks us to rebuild their site and take over their old site in the mean time, we use Yottaa to speed the heck out of their poorly-hosted, poorly written previous site.

Also, don't be confused when the sales guys call and say they're from "Yoda". The space muppet is the correct way to pronounce yotta, the SI prefix.

mildweed··on Google Bot now crawls arbitrary Javascript sites
This will negatively affect tons of analytics tools.

Time to start blacklisting googlebot UA strings from my custom javascript tracking tools.

mildweed··on Three things you should never put in your database

  * Credit card numbers
  * Social security numbers
  * Plain text passwords
Can't tell you how often I find them in databases. Its mindboggling.
mildweed··on 99Dresses (YC W12) wants to give women an infinite closet
BuyMyCloset.com
mildweed··on Poll: Do you test your code?
Testing? Shoot, we sometimes code in prod!

(article's not mine, but might as well be)

mildweed··on Snacking Hierarchy
TL;DR:

  First, I must take a sip of water.
  Next, I have to eat a serving of vegetables or fruit.
  Next, I can eat a serving of nuts or more fruit.
  Last, I am allowed whatever terrible yet tasty treat I want, up to one serving.
mildweed··on The future of CSS vendor prefixes
So what can we do as web authors? I use standardized CSS generators that hit all appropriate prefixes. ex: http://css3generator.com/

What else?

mildweed··on WordPress has left the building
Wordpress is still great for small businesses. The problems he was listing off tend to be issues for large organizations.
mildweed··on What to Look For in PHP 5.4
I've been waiting for PHP to use traits my whole professional career as a PHP dev. Super excited they're here now.
mildweed··on WordPress Security: Seven Ways I Could Hack Into Your WordPress Site
I've been looking for a good #5 for a while. Could you point me to one?
mildweed··on Malls track shopper cell phones on Black Friday. To opt out? Turn off your phone
Isn't this prohibited by the FCC?
mildweed··on Daylight Saving Time is a huge mess
As a programmer, I hate DST. In fact, I also hate time zones, leap years and horseradish sauce. All are unnecessarily complicated. Now, I don't think the OP's proposal of having everyone go GMT/UTC would work, a simpler solution to measuring this thing we call time has got to exist.

The only thing keeping me from trying to solve this problem with a new standard is this: http://xkcd.com/927/

mildweed··on Google warns that rate limits, overage fees are coming to Maps API
Not only does v3 not require an API key, as of Sept 28 (a couple days before the rate limiting went into effect) sending a v2 API key to v3 will cause the request to fail:

http://groups.google.com/group/google-maps-js-api-v3-notify/...

Sounds like they're laying the ground work for v3 to use API keys again.

mildweed··on The coffeeshop fallacy
As a coffee blogger in Kansas City (kcperky.com) I can attest to coffee shops being a hazardous business to be in. For every two shops that open, I expect one of them will close in 6-18 months.
mildweed··on 3D Web hits the big time: Google Maps on WebGL
Yes, but it seems Google doesn't let Firefox access MapsGL yet. Your guess as to why...
mildweed··on "Don't make my eyes bleed" as a responsive website
Pleased to see that it adjusts to browser window height, not just width.
mildweed··on Colbert tribute to Steve Jobs
Good comedians speak the truth that is apparent, but is possibly not being said. Breaking social morays and speaking freely is more of the comedians' strongest weapons.
mildweed··on Introducing Amazon Silk
the SSL would have to stop in the EC2 instance where the bulk of the 'browser' is. Its then up to the Silk infrastructure to ensure the transmissions from the Fire to EC2 would be secure as well.
mildweed··on Browser Market Pollution: IE[x] is the new IE6
So price support for certain browsers as features. IE7 +5%. IE6 +30%.
mildweed··on Will Robots Steal Your Job?
At some point, when all the means of production and deduction are automated, capitalism will likely collapse. My input to society as an individual will come from my human qualities, not from my labor or reasoning qualities. Star Trek TNG's society seems more prophetic every day.
