mikkupikku··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
In the modern era, the difference between sea mine and drone or torpedo can be a lot fuzzier than you may expect. People think of spikey balls, but some sea mines today can do stuff like use passive sonar to match targets against an internal database before firing a homing torpedo. I doubt Iran has these, but they certainly have the proficiency to think creatively about the problem.

> My understanding is that the regime in Iran has been terrorizing around the world for decades

The list of Iranian terror attacks in America amounts to a whole lot of fuck all. Whatever Iran might be doing elsewhere shouldn't be America's problem.

"Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran"

Gee, I wonder why they want nukes. Pity they didn't get them in time, this whole war might have been averted.

If you like, we could compare a single Thiel adulthood to individual randomly chosen lives of popes. The average pope has a lot more blood on their hands. Both are bad, but one has caused more harm to humanity no matter which way you slice it. To argue that a single heretic is worse than the whole catholic church rings pretty silly to me. The best would be if they were to both destroy each other, but let's be real and acknowledge that Peter Thiel is going to die and become irrelevant long before the catholic church, which may very well continue on for another two thousand years for all we know.

The real dangers to peace in the Middle East are America, Israel and historically the British, because these three are the bastards that toppled Iran's democracy and lead them to such a defensive posture in the first place. With the utmost respect, kindly blow your judeo-american sanctions out your ass. America should have NOTHING to do with Iran whatsoever, we don't have any moral right to intervention here.

Iran shooting back after being attacked validates the decision to attack them in the first place?

"supposed to be allowed to have."

Ridiculous premise. They armed themselves thusly because American politicians have been singing "Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran!" for generations.

Possibly so, yes, that may have happened. The strike may have been calculated to inflame the Iranian public and lock them into a prolonged conflict, great for military contractors and their shareholders.

"When a devil gets caught by a monster, I, as a human being, can only hope that they both die."
mikkupikku··on Vatican Rebukes Peter Thiel's Antichrist Lectures in Rome
Two thousand years and they still haven't figured out that Christ wasn't covering himself in gold and jewels. The Vatican has evolved, but not to conform to the ideals espoused by Christ. Note also that evolution isn't synonymous with progress. Lamprey eels evolve too.
mikkupikku··on Vatican Rebukes Peter Thiel's Antichrist Lectures in Rome
I think it's a reasonable argument that we should be more concerned with the organization that has the better part of a two thousand year track record of murdering people, but in either case I did just accuse both of them of being antichrists. Anyway, Greta is my queen.
mikkupikku··on Vatican Rebukes Peter Thiel's Antichrist Lectures in Rome
They don't own Rome anymore, the Vatican is their own country now thanks to ol' Benny. Anyway, both parties here are idiots with high opinions of themselves who actually believe in a pile nonsense, but which of the two has really caused more harm for humanity?

There is no "THE Antichrist" there are only antichrists, plural, normal not supernatural people and organizations that behave in a notably non-christlike way, and both parties here seem to qualify easily.

Tylenol causes depression, got it. Advise to take seriously.
mikkupikku··on Study finds no evidence cannabis helps anxiety, depression, or PTSD
> Cocaine was originally believed to be a viable treatment for depression.

Is it not??

Sure there's the addiction and harm from abuse that make it less than ideal for long term use, to put it mildly, but weed isn't coke so what's really the argument here?

It means specialization. When people with no software development experience but lots of experience in some other domain have the ability to create software that fits their individual needs, that's a recipe for an explosion in highly specialized tooling.

Seems like a really slick application, nice work.
mikkupikku··on Passengers who refuse to use headphones can now be kicked off United flights
I get what you're saying, but blasting music on buses has been a thing since boom-boxes were invented, it's nothing new. I am also not inclined to blame systems instead of individuals because most people with the same background of injustice will choose to respond to that injustice by being better than it. It's only a very small number of people being disruptive like this, while the number of people with fair and understandable grievances against society is massive.
mikkupikku··on Passengers who refuse to use headphones can now be kicked off United flights
Doesn't surprise me, but I'm only speaking from my experience in America.
mikkupikku··on Passengers who refuse to use headphones can now be kicked off United flights
In America, a small number of people derive pleasure from being disruptive to everybody, and blasting music on public transit with captive audiences is a very "traditional" way of fucking with people and expressing your broad contempt for their society. I'd estimate that maybe one in five times you get on a city bus in America, you'll encounter somebody like this.

Very rarely does anybody call them out or otherwise try to reign it in, because you're as likely as not to be physically attacked and in America, the odds of bystanders coming to your rescue are... Not zero, but not great.

I wonder if shoulder mounted speakers that aren't touching the users ears could help resolve this to everybody's reasonable satisfaction. (That is, everybody who's not deliberately trying to broadcast their music to everybody else.)

It didn't really work well with cigs until govs started banning smoking in restaurants, bars, etc. That said, the shaming was important for setting the social stage for such legal bans.

mikkupikku··on The Story of Marina Abramovic and Ulay (2020)
Her performance art consciously courts controversy, so it wouldn't be fair to the artist to ignore this aspect of her work. Anybody who wants the discussion to avoid the controversies is being dumb and quite frankly doesn't understand art!

The American political apparatus was already normalizing relations with the Soviet Union due to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (1931, which is when WW2 truly started), due to the great depression in America making alliance with the Soviets look economically advantageous for America, and due to political instability in Germany and Italy. There was a strong sense of shit hitting the fan soon and that America would be with the Soviet Union through it. FDR officially recognized the Soviet Union in 1933, during the peak of Stalin's famine in Ukraine, which the New York Times was actively denying.

As for other newspapers, the Times isn't worse but bears the brunt of the criticism because they are after all America's foremost, most influential newspaper.

A good life hack I figured out is to smear your laptop camera and microphone with sticky tack, not to totally disable them but to insufferably degrade them, then after a few attempts you can be excused from the expectation of ever appearing on video calls and can disable both permanently.
mikkupikku··on Blocking Internet Archive Won't Stop AI, but Will Erase Web's Historical Record
They have a very long track record of pretending to be independent but actually toeing the government's line at key pivotal moments in history when an independent newspaper is needed the most. Everybody here knows how they helped start the second Iraq war I hope, but that wasn't a one-off fluke. Go back through the major wars in American history and you can find the New York Times championing the cause of war before each of these. World Was 2, they uncritically accepted Walter Durranty letting Stalin ghostwrite for him, specifically w.r.t. Stalin's man-made famine in Ukraine, because America was allied with Stalin. WWI, frequent editorializing of Germans being wild Asiatic savages while the Anglos were good and noble people that Americans owed something to for some reason nobody could explain. Vietnam, they uncritically accepted government reports on the second Gulf of Tonkin incident which never happened and broadly accepted the governments own reports about how the war was going, at least in the early years when it still might have been possible to avoid further engagement. Korean war, they supported the government narrative of communist containment. First Iraq War, they uncritically reported very dubious atrocity propaganda, like the fraudulent "Nayirah testimony" given by the teenage daughter of a diplomat pretending to be a politically uninvolved hospital worker.

The pattern here is deference to official narratives at precisely the times when criticism is needed the most.

mikkupikku··on Ubuntu 26.04 Ends 46 Years of Silent sudo Passwords
The first is like 3 lines of code, to get the attrs, disable the echo flag then set the attrs again. The second is.. I don't know probably about twenty lines of code to handle the primitive line editing yourself and also asterisk printing. In my view, this is enough of a difference to motivate a conclusion that the first is good enough. Also note that this decision was made back in the early 70s when login was first implemented, and it established a convention which was very easy and convienent to carry forward to su and later sudo.
