mikkom··on Ask HN: Can anyone from Crowdstrike explain the back story?
Most likely legal is highly involved in any postings about the incident
mikkom··on Show HN: I’ve made a cheaper SEO research tool
I fortunately found some details myself too (edited the parent), thanks anyway
mikkom··on Show HN: I’ve made a cheaper SEO research tool
Please enlighten us about the backend provider, I'm interested. It seems the OP of this thread is using the same backend as he's not willing to tell it.

edit: Ubersuggest mentioned by someone says in dev blog

https://neilpatel.com/blog/ubersuggest-update/

> My data feed from SEO Power Suite, Data For SEO, and Shared Count totaled $75,253 for January.

Is this the backend mentioned?

mikkom··on Spaced repetition for teaching two-year olds how to read
Well said, I would think it's even disadvantageous to make them sit in front of smart screens to learn to read and to get positive feedback from their parents.
mikkom··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time
I personally thought the interesting part of the submission was the "every" of the title, ie there might have been some AI algo that could have somehow approximated height and shadows based on multiple satellite images or use some data that is not available for everyone (hence the "every" could have applied)

Currently it's an approximation of shadows based on unreliable open data which is nice but not that special.

mikkom··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time
I just had to check some really rural places and went to some random village in tibet. As there is no information about trees or buildings there, just roads, it surprisingly doesn't work - it just shows some shadows based on terrain heights in middle of empty village road grid.

So as expected, if the site has height information it can draw shadows but definitely not for "every building" etc that the title claims.

mikkom··on Bird flu in cattle: is cow's milk safe to drink?
Here is the most important part

> The agency used egg inoculation tests to find out – the "gold standard for infectivity". These tests involve introducing the virus to an egg and incubating it there, to see if the virus reproduces.

> The tests came back negative, indicating that there was no evidence of live H5N1 bird flu virus in the pasteurised milk. "This demonstrated conclusively that standard pasteurisation inactivates influence when raw milk is processed," the agency concluded.

mikkom··on Avoiding the soft delete anti-pattern
Soft deletion is not an anti-pattern. In real software you need to have possibility to delete items but they still need to be exist in historical items because of analytics, historical data integrity etc.

Soft delete is the only way to make this possible without horrible kludges.

mikkom··on Mobile Ad Blocker Will No Longer Stop YouTube's Ads
Yes, I also use "real" uBlock origin with kiwi browser. It's exactly the same addon as the computer one installed via chrome store.
mikkom··on Mobile Ad Blocker Will No Longer Stop YouTube's Ads
But uBlock with browser that supports it still does :-)

(If you have android, try kiwi browser if you haven't - it's chrome based and you can use regular extensions with it)

mikkom··on AI made these movies sharper – critics say it ruined them
Paywalled for me
mikkom··on Banning open weight models would be a disaster
Wow what a horrible idea. Sounds like monopoly in the making. I would be really interested to hear what "open" AI has commented about this - I guess they are lobbying for this with all of their billions.

If the US government really want to do this correctly, they must also ban any API access to AI models and ban all research related to AI.

How could this be even written as law? Universities and companies are probihited to publish their research? How many layer models are forbidden to be published? All neural networks?

mikkom··on Show HN: I taught ChatGPT to find cool domain names – with availability check
I get very poor results from this. I get much better results when I just use chatGPT directly with some custom prompt that asks for good domain names. Here is just one example

< buzzviralnetwork.com

< chatterwavehub.com

mikkom··on Claude 3 beats GPT-4 on Aider's code editing benchmark
Anthropic is ex-openai so even if there is a secret sauce that openai uses, they might know it.
mikkom··on The Mirror (Godot bashed game engine)
This really needs some screenshots and/or video of what it is.
mikkom··on Chronos: Learning the Language of Time Series
Do you really think the profitable algo traders are going to tell you that :-)
mikkom··on Chronos: Learning the Language of Time Series
No. Why do you think so?
mikkom··on U.S. No Longer Ranks Among 20 Happiest Countries
> government has generally been described as the most right in modern history in Finland

Which is probably much more on the left than any US government for example and quite far from the "far right" you were stating in previous post.

> "taking from the poor, giving to the rich" and a xenophobic agenda

Quite strong words. This sounds very much like your personal opinion instead of a fact.

> to my understanding polls show a clear correlation between "everything was better under Kekkonen" (a president for over 25 years with a somewhat authoritarian leader style) and voting for the "True Finns" / "Finns Party" today

Sources please for the "clear correlation". This also sounds very much like your personal opinion.

> My point was more like the other way round: Happy people would not vote for the party of the dissatisfied, simple answers, everything was better before EU/the foreigners came. For those following German politics, "Wutbürger" (angry citizens) would typically not be happy people, would they?

Voting parties more on the right does not mean that "people are not happy", it mostly means that people understand economic principles.

The previous leftist government caused the Finland's debt level to raise to very dangerous levels while the economy shrinked at the same time and were only going to add more debt without cutting any expenses or encouraging new business. I personally think that business-positive government is a very good thing and apparently so do most of the happy finnish voters.

mikkom··on U.S. No Longer Ranks Among 20 Happiest Countries
> A far right government with an xenophobic, anti-EU, "we need a strong leader" party being the second strongest

Other things on the list I can understand but not this one. The government is not "far right" and not "xenophobic" (although one of the party in the government might be labeled as such, persus). Compared to US for example I think the current government is much more on the left than either republicans or democrats. The leading party in finland (part of the government) is actively pushing for more work-based migration.

Where did you get the "we need a strong leader" rethoric that you mention? I have never seen that from Persus (the party you are refering to)

mikkom··on Show HN: Cylinder HN – View Trending Hacker News and Search Everything
Sorry to say but I think this is much more confusing, has less visible data and is more difficult to use than hacker news.
mikkom··on OpenAI and Elon Musk
> still stayed with the mission to offer it for free once the AGI is achieved

And based on how they have acted in the past, how much do you trust they will act as they now say when/if they achieve AGI?

mikkom··on OpenAI and Elon Musk
They are totally closed now, not just keeping their models for themselves for profit purposes. They also don't disclose how their new models work at all.

They really need to change their name and another entity that actually works for open AI should be set up.

mikkom··on Stable Diffusion 3: Research Paper
That was basically why openai was founded.

Too bad they decided to get greedy :-(

mikkom··on Why do tree-based models still outperform deep learning on tabular data? (2022)
I assume it's because there are some very complex relationships and patterns that cannot be captured by decision trees. Tree models work better on simpler data at least that is my gut feeling based on previous experiments with similar data.
mikkom··on Why do tree-based models still outperform deep learning on tabular data? (2022)
It's very important to note that this is from 2022. I'm not saying it's not true today but neural models have gotten much better in 2 years.

(I'm personally using NN models for predicting certain values for tabularly structured data and at least for my case, the NN works better than state-of-the art tree models.)

mikkom··on Hetzner switches to new billing model
I have a dedicated server in Hetzner and I don't understand what this means. How do they decide when the server is "used"? Based on CPU allocation? SSH sessions? HTTP traffic? Power?

It's easy to shut down virtual servers and continue from the same position. It's not that easy to do the same for servers.

The linked page is very unclear about this.

mikkom··on Rye: A Vision Continued
Direct support for binary packages, for example gpu specific non open source drivers etc
mikkom··on Finance worker pays out $25M after video call call with deepfake CFO
> Finance worker pays out $25 million after video call with deepfake ‘chief financial officer’

That is the actual title of the linked article.

mikkom··on Rye: A Vision Continued
I'm usually using conda (mamba) nowadays as it also has binary support so I can use cuda etc. easily for deep learning purposes. Is this something Rye can also do?
mikkom··on Finance worker pays out $25M after video call call with deepfake CFO
VC usually means venture capital(ist) so the title is very confusing.
