Surprising or not, they do. I suppose some people may feel as you do, but many do not. Many of our customers look at us as a resource for how best to use the Infrastructure we offer as a Service and share a great deal of detail.
People call on the telephone and discuss their plans, requirements, and business models before signing up. Often, once they are customers they may discuss with us ways to optimize. We check in from time to time and often they call us about their upcoming efforts to see if we have input. Of course there are some that we don't hear from at all, but whose web site at their email domains clearly spell out their businesses.
I can confirm that this is a thing... a bigger thing than one might think. I run an IaaS cloud provider and I know off the top of my head several customers of ours who each maintain a fleet of VMs to do this for a variety of products. Eg: Limited edition shoes, show tickets, etc. Some of our customers who do this keep the VMs running and some fire them up only when needed. Some use custom software and scripts and some use purchased software designed specifically for the sites and products they want to beat others to.
I'll admit it, I most likely wouldn't have called to interview him... he never had a job before (at least none on his resume). Admittedly, I'm not trying to change the world. I'm just trying to do better than my competition for my customers. I don't need an academic on the payroll. I'm glad that resume didn't come across my desk. I wouldn't have know what to do with him and would certainly wold be kicking myself now.
To understand this article (swiped from Wikipedia):
TEU: Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit is the unit of the capacity of a container ship, a container terminal and the statistics of the container transit in a port. The two most common international standardised containers are those of twenty and forty foot.
LDT: Light displacement ton, the weight of a ship without anything on board, used to determine the value of a ship which is to be scrapped
I don't want the app. Arrg! I am on my iPad and I can't get to what I assume is a web interface to this... Only a big ugly page with half-showing icons for how to download the android or iOS apps. Why can't I just exit out of the offer and see the desktop version? Rawrrrrr!
Are you opening a US bank under a US charter and US law and with US insurance? Each type of institution (eg: national bank or credit union) has its own rules and covered or rfulated by a different governmental institution
Yes. However, each state has its own income taxes and sales taxes. The marginal rate at 100k (the tax rate for each additional dollar earned) is higher (28% according to this article). In my city, in California: 7.75% sales tax, 10.3% state income tax... Oh, social security, Medicare... These add more. My point being that at 100k a California resident (for example) pays much more than 21.5% effective rate, and much more than 28% on each additional dollar earned.
There are different rules for "IRA". If you are a sole proprietor instead of a corporation, you can do a SEP IRA. That, depending on your earnings, will allow you to sock away up to $49k/yr. If you are incorporated, you must offer the same 401k plan to all employees (you and your team). Also, company 401k plans cost money to manage... more than you might think. When you are small it is more than you'd expect. I incorporated last year and this is my experience in So. CA.
I love it. Those that have the printers can print their parts, and pay for the raw materials and the printer and the time. For those that do not, well, they can STFU about the cost of parts. I actually see this as more of an STFU move in reality/practicality, but it's a very cool way to say it. I wish I could do this with my products, but its not applicable.
Oh excellent. I can help those poor neutered friends stuck as half of user like "Susan N Steve Smith" because their significant other created that account.
I am at CloudOpen (colocated with LinuxCon) and will make every effort to get to the SDHN meetup if I can muster the energy after the con. But, everyone knows at SDHN, I am almost certain to show up at Obrien's by 9:30p.
Yes, generators must be run priodically. However, not all data centers actually put the full load (or any load at all) on the generators during non-emergency periodic testing.
Ubuntu desktop, Ubuntu laptop, iPad, 95.5% of our servers are Linux or BSD. In our office, we have one old windows xp box on P4 hardware to remote desktop into for various stuff that cant be done on Linux or is significant easier on WinXP....rare.
