mikestorrent··on Zero-Touch OAuth for MCP
Fantastic news. Is there any communication between you folks and the Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) team? Would love to know if we can expect this soon or if will take a while.
mikestorrent··on GLM-5.2 is the new leading open weights model on Artificial Analysis
The new Macbook Neo is 8GB. I think that if we are lucky, the huge RAM demand right now means new factory buildouts which eventually means more supply and prices go back down, and capacity begins to go up. This level of demand was just not anticipated by anyone.
mikestorrent··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
It's honestly been easy as hell to support and upstream support contracts are available for cheap as chips, like a grand a socket a year or less. An MSP could partner with them to offer enhanced support if they were smart! It's just KVM / Qemu / Ceph on Linux, plenty of 3rd parties can provide support for it... just go spin up a cluster in a trio of VMware machines with nested virtualization turned on and take it for a spin.
mikestorrent··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
Having done this to a number of clusters, it works really well; TLDR you can have it as simple as mounting the remote ESXi as a datastore and just migrating it straight over in the UI. Or automate it if you have 40,000 of them as Tesco does, though tbqh I'm not sure Proxmox is the solution for that scale of workload.
mikestorrent··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
I don't think I could find a sandwich anywhere around here in Canada save maybe one of those awful gas station ones for under $6
mikestorrent··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
Oh, you'll be able to afford it... but you may end up having to spend some time instead
mikestorrent··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Remember to go outside once in a while, my dude
mikestorrent··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Companies with large C/C++ codebases should sell AI companies the right to train on their code for $$.
mikestorrent··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
As a Cursor user, I don't have to have thought about the providers behind the compute - I get name brand Claude, or cheap Kimi, or Grok, and it's all got roughly the same agentic experience, and only one bill. Enterprises love this.
mikestorrent··on Petition to Withdraw Canada's Bill C-22
Oh cool, we should set up stricter free speech restrictions in order to encourage our nascent tech sector. Sure thing champ.

Canadian tech is nonexistent because we continue to see ourselves as a colony instead of a country, a resource-extraction post-national economic state instead of a people.

mikestorrent··on Why Thermodynamics Rules Future Orbital Data Centers
Finally, the classic BOFH excuse of sunspots causing issues will be true
mikestorrent··on Thermodynamics rules future orbital data centers
That seems pretty cheap, like, can I launch my cat's ashes into space or something for $50?
mikestorrent··on Thermodynamics rules future orbital data centers
Silly human, won't be us building that. Just hope that you get one of the nice gilded cages!
mikestorrent··on Anthropic requires 30 day data retention for Fable and Mythos
Yep. They changed the terms, which needs legal review in my org, but the Fable model was available immediately, so of COURSE people have to go and flock to it to see how much better it is. Amazing how easy it is to spend five figures on demand and have very little to show for it; meanwhile when I want to buy a piece of enterprise software for 40-50k/year I have to spend weeks or months building the case, providing justification for ROI etc.
mikestorrent··on Who's the smartest corvid?
Working on training my crowbuddy so that he bites the gold coins and only brings real ones, was getting too much iron pyrite
mikestorrent··on Who's the smartest corvid?
I have been working on this as well and have a crowbuddy who enjoys what I feed him. I want him to do more, but haven't gotten him to yet.

A couple years ago I was doing this and they brought me a chicken head as a gift. Thanks... I guess?

mikestorrent··on Siri AI
There comes a point at which these execs cannot have more yachts. Apple still wields far more societal influence than Nvidia does, and will for a long time to come; and of course there's nothing stopping them from forming a partnership and putting Nvidia chips into an Apple device if it came down to it.
mikestorrent··on Will the next high value profession be people who can think independently?
I think it probably always was, provided that your independent thought is aligned with what other people actually need. Independent thought for its own sake can often lead to your ruin if taken to the logical extreme.
mikestorrent··on Siri AI
Most people don't care that Siri doesn't do very much; if anything, people outside of HN are already sorta sick of AI features being shoved in their face.
mikestorrent··on Siri AI
If anything, shipping and sitting on the previous incarnation of Siri as a basic feature set to shut up iPhone users for a few years while everything else matured might be viewed as a very shrewd move ten years from now.
mikestorrent··on Apple Core AI Framework
Well, let's not forget that text models are not the only models! Video models are much slower and need comparatively more resources, and all they can do even at that size is generate videos a few seconds long. Clearly a ton more work is going to go into those, and demand for them will probably increase as more creative tools get authored using them as a central part of the workflow. Low-res local rendering for preview might be a thing, but the lion's share of the work for high-res, near-realtime rendering is going to be done on huge clusters for a long time yet.
mikestorrent··on Aging and Eye Problems
Light mode has its place! I think I am far happier reading light mode text, but when I code I want dark mode. Dark for _everything_ is sometimes overwhelming, it always seems like there are too many things to look at.
mikestorrent··on Boeing 787 Dreamliner Loses Door at Remote Pacific Airport, Puzzling Engineers
I have never heard "church" being used as a verb before
mikestorrent··on VoidZero Is Joining Cloudflare
Perhaps one learning here is that people should train on recognizing elegance and aesthetics first before building frameworks
mikestorrent··on HP re-releases classic computer science calculator: The HP-16C
Actually it's an HP 45. Nicer! Lots more functions. I need a new battery cover... maybe something to try 3d printing.

360' splatter bonus
mikestorrent··on MacBook Neo is so popular that Apple doubled production
Crowdstrike is not what is slowing down my Mac. Web pages in Firefox that somehow take up 1GB of RAM are.
mikestorrent··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
...because it was fucking trained on Neal Stephenson, not the other way around, guy.
