mikeodds··on How The Economist’s presidential forecast works
I didn’t realise his checkup was public [1]

I thought there would be more around neuro in there. Interesting that both recent presidents are (purportedly) non drinkers.

mikeodds··on Francis Ford Coppola's “Godfather Notebook”
That’s nice colour. I’d love to find somewhere that acts as the “neighbourhoods lounge” in SF now.
mikeodds··on FBI seizes hacking forum BreachForums – again
FBI seizures as platform risk
mikeodds··on Good Air Quality
Disclaimer: I like indoor plants.

Wouldn’t you need a very large number of indoor plants to bring C02 sub ambient levels with - a human in the room exhaling C02 - compared to just having an open window and cycling the air.

mikeodds··on I've developed a fully functioning automated snapchat message marketing bot

mikeodds··on FTX to Sell $884M of Anthropic Shares to Two Dozen Institutional Investors
No one calls timeout in crypto and it’s just an ERC-20

It’s fairly illiquid on most non bucket shop exchanges though

mikeodds··on Weak rules allow ultra-processed foods like Lunchables on school menus (2023)
I’ve also read this and I can’t explain why in the US it’s like a completely different meal compared to anywhere outside that I’ve tried it.
mikeodds··on Weak rules allow ultra-processed foods like Lunchables on school menus (2023)
A McDonald’s in France costs twice as much where a coffee costs less than half as much.

You also don’t need to use a napkin to eat the burger in one of those places.

mikeodds··on Varda's drug-cooking Winnebago will be remembered as a space pioneer
anyone have an example comparison of the economics of manufacturing Drug A on earth vs in space with launch and reentry costs included? Is the yield improved that much for certain pharmaceuticals? Is it because we can just yeet waste substances towards the sun?
mikeodds··on Combating olive oil fraud with nuclear innovations
“As of 2021, the most frequent type of adulteration of olive oil is that oil of lower quality is mixed into it.[24] Adulterated oil is usually no more serious than passing off inferior, but safe, products as superior olive oil, however in 1981 almost 700 people died, it is believed, as a consequence of consuming rapeseed (canola) oil adulterated with aniline intended for use as an industrial lubricant, but sold as olive oil in Spain (see toxic oil syndrome).”

mikeodds··on Tea.xyz causes a flood of spam pull requests to open source projects
In a very similar vein, a projected called Starknet recently airdropped tokens to early adopters/developers/supporters, the claim process for developers was tied to the GitHub names.

Two issues arose:

- GitHub names can change, this lead to race to squat names that had rights to the airdrop for any since changed names

- it’s incentivised those who are “farming” airdrops, ie creating multiple personas/wallets in an attempt to get larger allocations, to now add making low value pull requests to GitHub projects

mikeodds··on SEC Statement on the Approval of Spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Products
Fantastic quote:

Though we’re merit neutral, I’d note that the underlying assets in the metals ETPs have consumer and industrial uses, while in contrast bitcoin is primarily a speculative, volatile asset that’s also used for illicit activity including ransomware,[4] money laundering,[5] sanction evasion,[6] and terrorist financing.[7]

To poke a nest, which other assets are used for the aforementioned activities

mikeodds··on I pwned half of America's fast food chains simultaneously
Very much agree the incentives aren't fully aligned.

From a bug hunters perspective, certain issues are often underpaid or marked as non-issues (and then subsequently fixed without paying out) so it’s in their interest to find a chain of issues or explore to show real impact.

Then from the programmes perspective you have to content with gpt generated reports for complete non issues so I can also understand why the might be quick to dismiss without hard impact evidence rather than a “potentially could be used to”

mikeodds··on Ask HN: What to do with $70k expiring Google Cloud credits?
I’m sure someone with a gen ai product would love some discount compute
mikeodds··on If you get sued in the US, "eDiscovery" can cost $1M
from that same thread:

“Lost all my respect for @SureSwiftCap. They sent a trademark infringement to Shopify saying that "back-in-stock" apps are infringing their wordmark "Back In Stock".

I guess all the "back-in-stock" apps on Shopify got the same notice.”

Such limited time on the planet and having to deal with people like this.

mikeodds··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan’s War on San Francisco Politics Has Only Just Begun
I guess YC has a vested interest in SF being a liveable and safe city which seems reasonable.
mikeodds··on 200k Compromised OpenAI Credentials Available for Purchase on the Dark Web
Likewise and you seemingly have to wait until the end of the month for invoicing (and activation?) 3.5 doesn’t work for my use case and so I’m just having to loop queries to run up billing for no purpose.
mikeodds··on 200k Compromised OpenAI Credentials Available for Purchase on the Dark Web
I mean I’d love to be able to actually get access to the GPT4 API
mikeodds··on Ask HN: Why is HN not reachable through IPv6?

mikeodds··on Ask HN: Anyone still using PHP to build side projects or webapps
Yeah lots, lack of dependancy issues or having to deal with package managers when trying to deploy something quickly or after not touching it for a while is refreshing

mikeodds··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
I’ve seen Lime have the inverse (ie non parking zones) in various US cities where you will be warned then billed (I think $50! in Venice beach) if you finish the ride.

mikeodds··on The SPAC Fad Is Ending in a Pile of Bankruptcies and Fire Sales
Another worthwhile watch from the SPAC king Chamath

https://twitter.com/silvermanjacob/status/159505980620064358...

It seems insane to me these people dump on retail and their followers and continue to stand up in public.
