Hm. For truly niche software, I suppose I can see that, but for anything with more than even a few hundred customers, I don't think it'd last. Someone (like me, for example) would smell an opportunity and sell for less.

I suppose it's not a bad thing for you in the short term, but I'd caution against getting comfortable on the profit cushion, and reinvest in revenue sources that can't be taken away by the same opportunistic competitor.

Wouldn't that only work until a competitor with a sufficient product crops up with a cost+ price?

It's the mode switch that's frustrating. It interrupts my concentration when I discover I need the mouse, when all I'm trying to do is code.

I use a mouse when I have to, but I'd probably use it more if I could get one of those nubbin-mice in my desktop keyboard. 99% of my job is typing. Switching between mouse and keyboard is annoying.

At home, I tend to do the same kinds of things I do at work. However, I picked up a Logitech bt media keyboard with a touchpad off to the side--and that works fine. I wish I could find a wired version. Cherry builds keyboards that look worthwhile, but they don't sell them piecemeal to little guys like me.

You're thinking of 2nd Gig.
mikemol··on Timing the Linux -j(cpu+1) Myth
It's very much a case-by-case thing. On my quad-core Phenom 9650, with 8GB of RAM, I tried building FFMPEG using -j1 through -j10. Build times dropped until I got to -j9, which meant that, for my system, the fastest build occured when I ran -jN where N was 2x my CPU cores. This is the only place I documented it: http://multimedia.cx/eggs/ffmpeg-and-multiple-build-threads/...

It helps that they lock in sweet contracts with DSL providers like SBC to provide email services.

And much appreciated. I don't know when I'd have had the stones to switch to VPS (I still don't think of myself as a sysadmin all that much) if you hadn't helped us jump over to Slicehost. I've got a 2GB RAM node over at prgmr.com, now; more RAM than I know what to do with.

Site grows slowly because it's growing steadily. Well, that, and I haven't had the time to set up income or the really nice features that would depend on it. :)

If you ever hit the GRR area, I need to buy you a drink.
