mikehotel··on Frank Lloyd Wright and the “textile block” construction system (1992)
Water could reach the rebar from the ground, but I would think waterproof membranes and proper drainage should allow it to remain mostly dry. The foam panels should also reduce the amount of air that gets to the concrete and the rebar. Of course, you want concrete to be wet for curing, but how would water and oxygen reach it after it drys out? Do you think the oxidization process will not stop after curing?

I probably don't know more than you, but I am interested in learning more about it. The insulation most often used is EPS (expanded polystyrene), which many studies are trying to find ways to accelerate decomposition from an ecology perspective. Sheltered from UV and solvents, it should last more than 200 years, with some marketing materials giving it an indefinite lifespan. We need more history on ICF, since it is a relatively new building material/technique.

Would you consider insulated concrete forms (ICF) addressing the water intrusion concerns, while retaining the other benefits of reinforced concrete?

“God has no need to justify His actions to man. He who built the Universe can destroy it when He chooses. It is arrogance—it is perilously near blasphemy—for us to say what He may or may not do.”

Possibly taken out of context from the linked document.

mikehotel··on Plant Root System Drawings
Some of the drawings do seem to show how different soils impact root growth. For example, see https://images.wur.nl/digital/collection/coll13/id/1288/rec/... Is there another explanation for the root structure in this drawing? It would have been nice to see this reflected in the metadata to make it more easily findable.

mikehotel··on uBlock Origin review
Increasing YouTube ad display rates on mobile drove me to using the (somewhat clunky) AdGuard share button in safari that blocks ads when using YT in Safari. I’m just glad there is some option on iOS.

It is funny that Android has better adblock features (uBO on Firefox).

mikehotel··on uBlock Origin review
(And now I can reply, lol)

Firefox Focus appears under Safari settings > content blockers, along with more typical blockers like AdGuard. I think they both implement Content Blocker API.

mikehotel··on uBlock Origin review
I was replying specifically to the first paragraph in the parent comment that other apps on iOS are not able to implement content blockers. Firefox Focus does appear to do just that. Obviously, not as effectively as uBlock Origin (thanks for testing!) but uBO isn’t yet available to install on Firefox on iOS.

(Edit since I can’t reply): Firefox Focus does appear to implement iOS content blocker since it appears as an option under Safari settings for content blockers.

mikehotel··on uBlock Origin review
Firefox Focus on iOS blocks 78% with all tracker blocks are enabled, and 62% with the last “Block other content trackers” option disabled. Percentage figures are from test on https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock.html.

Afghanistan is not yet on the list[1]. If the new government doesn’t uphold its obligations under Doha, there is a good chance it will be added to it in the future.

mikehotel··on Embarrassed by your Olympic javelin: did cavemen do it better? (2012)
From TFA: “ Also, javelins were increasingly landing flat, instead of poking upright into the turf, making distance-marking difficult, so in 1986 the International Association of Athletics Federations' technical committee authorized a new javelin design. The center of gravity was moved 1.6 inches forward, the tip was modified to make the javelin less aerodynamic, meaning it would nose down earlier and land sooner, reducing average flight distance by about 10 percent.”

35C is 95F, and 48C is 118F.

Those temp peaks are hotter than what it reached in the Pacific Northwest a few days ago, and in an area with permafrost.

mikehotel··on Pesticides are killing the world's soils
Understood. I think most people would start eating plants for protein before they resort to insects unless the insects are processed beyond recognition and relabelled. :)
mikehotel··on Pesticides are killing the world's soils
If insect populations are dwindling and in need of protection, why would we suggest people eat them? Wouldn’t that accelerate their demise?

Also, most folks are not protein deficient, but they are not getting enough fiber. https://www.vox.com/2019/3/20/18214505/fiber-diet-weight-los...

Find and support local farmers that participate in the international 4 per 1000 initiative. https://www.4p1000.org/

Individually, try to compost and grow food plants if possible. Choose to buy natural food rather than processed food that relies on federal subsidies. Explore less common foods instead of bananas. :) Visit a local ethnic grocery and ask for suggestions.

IIRC, mobile battery solutions have about 20-30% losses in freezing temps.

Fixed utility scale installations can regulate temps using geothermal and solar energy to reduce losses due to extreme weather.

mikehotel··on Health-records software pushed opioids to doctors in secret deal with drugmaker
Leaving ethics aside, 230M alerts to prescribing doctors for $1M seems like a steal for pharma co.

“Employees estimated internally that the drug company could add almost 3,000 patients and bolster opioid sales by as much as $11.3 million through the partnership. Under the contract, the drugmaker paid Practice Fusion almost $1 million”
