mikeInAlaska··on Laika, the space dog, and her one-way trip into orbit (2018)
> They expected Laika to die from oxygen deprivation—a painless death > within 15 seconds—after seven days in space.

So after seven days, the oxygen level would instantly drop to zero? I would think the Oxygen supply would run out, leaving the dog to slowly suffocate as the O2 supply of the capsule space was consumed.

mikeInAlaska··on The death of the PCIe expansion card
My PC I just built, a Ryzen 5950x with an X570S chipset, has the least PCIe slots I've ever had on a PC. (3) Plus... if you use the second slot, it cuts your graphics card down to x8 PCIe lanes, so no way !!! And if you use the third slot, it disables one of the on board NVME drive slots. This I had no choice. So, in the end I had room for the graphics card and a single 10 gigabit ethernet adapter.
mikeInAlaska··on Deepest infrared image of universe
By looking at the remnant of the big bang -- measuring the power spectrum of the remaining cosmic microwave background energy, across large angles of sky.
mikeInAlaska··on MicroPython – Python for Microcontrollers
I come from a background of C and C++ on the Atmel Mega and XMega controllers. I tried using Micropython on ESP32 to control some small OLED displays which had an 8 bit bus with a 6800 style interface. It was too slow.

I would still like to use micropython, but I need to figure out how to write certain pieces like the display lib in C.

mikeInAlaska··on FTC sues Intuit for its deceptive TurboTax “free” filing campaign
My last CPA had a dart board on his wall.

The outside was NOT DEDUCTIBLE.

The inner, smaller ring was DEDUCTIBLE.

The bullseye was DEDUCTIBLE UNTIL AUDIT.

mikeInAlaska··on FTC sues Intuit for its deceptive TurboTax “free” filing campaign
> Why is the system still this backwards?

Intuit lobbying hard to keep tax rules complex.

mikeInAlaska··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
These fuses are inside the CPU itself. They are programmed in a sense much like the firmware itself is.

These fuses have always been around in microcontrollers. They are used to configure various aspects of the microcontroller operations, like startup sequences, whether or not the contents of the chip can be read out, is their voltage monitoring (brownout detection) enabled, is there a watchdog timer enabled which could reset the chip automatically if needed, etc.

It is common that fuses like this can only be set to progressively stricter settings. And the only way to reset the fuses is to erase the entire chip, firmware and all. It sounds like these fuses in the Nvidia dont even allow this.

mikeInAlaska··on Photo captures space station crossing the moon
Alternatively, you could use a $2000 - $4000 (used price) C14 telescope on a $4000 AP900 (used price) mount, with a $1000 planetary camera. Still a chunk of change.

The only thing you can't buy used is the apparently killer atmospheric conditions he enjoys wherever he shoots.

mikeInAlaska··on Photo captures space station crossing the moon
Probably using a ZWO ASI camera. He has used the 183 pro in the past I know.
mikeInAlaska··on Photo captures space station crossing the moon
I would guess the Moon is actually much brighter once you filter the Sun to safe levels.

mikeInAlaska··on Air cargo is suddenly affordable relative to ocean shipping
I visited China in 2018, I live just outside of Anchorage.

First we flew to Seattle, and then after a layover, flew directly over Anchorage to Beijing via the great circle route. About 10 hrs and maybe 3800 miles into the journey, I was looking down at my home town.

mikeInAlaska··on Teach Me PCB
I absolutely love Diptrace. It has a free version with all libraries included. Over the years though I have progressively upgraded it to the "standard" level (which allows 6 layers and 1000 nodes) when they have sales. My own microcontroller designs with GPS and bluetooth, OLED displays, serial ports etc. have not passed 500 nodes.

mikeInAlaska··on Surgical masks reduce Covid-19 spread, large-scale Stanford study shows
I have been surprised a few times when wearing a surgical mask looped around my ears, when i had to remove it and then became instantly aware of all the smells of a place I was in. They were definitely isolating me from airborne particles.

mikeInAlaska··on Why in the world would you own bonds?
During the Covid market crash my bonds barely changed. If I had rolled it all into small caps at the bottom there I could have doubled its value by now. (And then rolled it back into bonds at the top here.)

Additionally for bonds, the percent of earnings looks low on my positions statement but a few times a year I get some fat dividends on my bond holdings which I do not think it reflects.

I totally gave up on finding a Ryzen 5xxx series chip. What a terrible year for product releases.
mikeInAlaska··on Ask HN: What entry-level telescope should I choose?
In my 20 years of experience under the stars, nothing beats the aesthetics of a refractor with a binoviewer. If I was starting again I would get a 4 inch refractor and put a binoviewer on it with a pair of 24mm panoptics.

mikeInAlaska··on Extraordinary ‘megaflash’ lightning strikes cover several hundred kilometres
The lot next to where I live has a cell tower which gets hit now and then. It is ... way beyond.. loud. The last time it happened all my pets were in front of me within 10 seconds after, as if saying "Pardon sir, we are not programmed for this event! Please advise!".

The induced EMF in my long cables like cat-5 throughout the house and my outdoor observatory also takes out motherboards, DSL interfaces and ethernet adapters each time. These days when I hear thunder I start unplugging devices.

mikeInAlaska··on Olympus quits camera business after 84 years
Lots of my friends are switching over to Sony. Sony high end gear works better out of the box. My Nikon fluorite 600mm f4 E and D850 has to be recalibrated for wide temperature changes. I expect my DSLR and lens to know when its in focus, not for me to have to tell it periodically where best focus is.
mikeInAlaska··on Tolstoy’s Children’s Stories

Disney hired Pixar to put out Tolstoy 1 and 2, then they acquired Pixar and have since released Tolstoy 3 and 4.

mikeInAlaska··on Open Source Ventilator Project
Has anyone looked at Cuirass ventilators? The (seemingly only) manufacturer says they are great for clearing lungs and breathing. They even seem to indicate them for use with Covid. They are basically iron lungs revamped. They look easier to amateur build than invasive ventilators and with no intubation, anyone could apply one.
