mikae1··on Internet's biggest annoyance: Cookie laws should target browsers, not websites
Not a radical idea. The EU is already working on it.

> […] the Commission is pondering how to tweak the rules to include more exceptions or make sure users can set their preferences on cookies once (for example, in their browser settings) instead of every time they visit a website.

>> What should we use instead?

> AVIF, JpegXL, maybe even WebP (lossless mode).

Definitely not lossless AVIF. It is less efficient than lossless WebP. WebP is supported everywhere, but is not much more efficient than optimized lossless PNG. Lossless JPEG XL has the best lossless compression but can't be used for web without fallbacks.

So, for offline archival: JPEG XL.

For web use without fallbacks: lossless WebP.

For web use with lossless WebP fallback: JPEG XL.

croc[1] has worked better for me. It supports resuming transfers, which is a must. It is very wormhole like and written in Go.

Does this work Linux to Linux too?

mikae1··on China's 200M gig workers are a warning for the world
Žižek in 2011:

“I think today the world is asking for a real alternative. Would you like to live in a world where the only alternative is either anglo-saxon neoliberalism or Chinese-Singaporean capitalism with Asian values? I claim if we do nothing we will gradually approach a kind of a new type of authoritarian society. Here I see the world historical importance of what is happening today in China. Until now there was one good argument for capitalism: sooner or later it brought a demand for democracy … What I’m afraid of is, with this capitalism with Asian values, we get a capitalism much more efficient and dynamic than our western capitalism. But I don’t share the hope of my liberal friends – give them ten years [and there will be] another Tiananmen Square demonstration – no, the marriage between capitalism and democracy is over.”

Due to the laws of enshittification they will eventually never be tuned to your benefit.

Most new accounts seem to require a face scan too (finally they're true to their name?). I recently needed to get a Facebook account and was not able to use it without providing the scan. Luckily I was able to do an AI face swap, but far from everyone is that savvy.
mikae1··on Firefox 143 for Android to introduce DoH
It's been accessible via about:config, yes.

But more importantly, there's a system wide DoH setting in Android (or at least in GrapheneOS). I don't see why it would preferable to only configure DoH in the browser.

If you gotta do it, you gotta do it.

mikae1··on macOS Tahoe
It's been working well with my NVIDIA equipped laptop and desktop machine with a Radeon GPU. I would never buy NVIDIA for Linux use again though. GPU support needs to be in the kernel, So Arc or Radeon it is.

> The initial investment into getting a usable Arch desktop was horrible.

It is my conviction that very few should go down the Arch route. If you want to sysadmin Linux or learn how to do so, fine. But if you want to do something else with your computer I'd strongly recommend looking into one of the https://universal-blue.org images (I use https://getaurora.dev btw).

These are based on atomic Fedora and my experience is that they offer extreme stability while still staying on the edge of development. Could we call it NixOS for mere mortals? Probably not if you ask the Nix peeps. :)

mikae1··on KDE launches its own distribution
> I run Debian stable, and it's not immutable, but it is very unchanging. I don't worry much about system libraries and tooling.

I basically did the same with Tumbleweed for a couple of years. Can't stand the point release distros. Lagging behind a year or two when it comes to the DE is not something I fancy. Never liked Tumbleweed much though. Felt very unpolished when using Plasma.

> The blind spot then is CLI apps and tooling.

I can really recommend homebrew. Works well. apt is for the system, homebrew is for user facing CLI apps. :)

mikae1··on KDE launches its own distribution
It has always been rather insane to me that user facing applications share packages with the base system.

The atomic distro approach works a lot better for me. Would not go back to a "normal" distro from https://getaurora.dev.

mikae1··on KDE launches its own distribution
I switched to https://getaurora.dev, also two years ago, and I'm not going back to a "normal" distro.

Can recommend Bazzite, Bluefin and Aurora which are derived from Atomic Fedora but come with niceties like distrobox and NVIDIA drivers (if you need them).

mikae1··on KDE launches its own distribution
> something with lower effort would be welcome

This is a major reason I ended up with https://getaurora.dev. I layer a few things, but it comes with bells and whistles (like NVIDIA drivers, if you need that).

I can't see myself going back to a "normal" distro. I don't want to spend time cosplaying a sysadmin, I have things to do on my computer.

mikae1··on Ask HN: Looking for headless CMS recommendation
> my-blog-article-title.md seems enough, and dates usually feel like clutter, since titles are distinct as they are and you don't really need the date in the filename to do anything useful.

I love to see when a page by posted just by looking at the URL. It also avoids naming collisions. For a static site, not rendered from a db, I wouldn't want to store every post ever written in one dir either. How well does that scale? Yeah, you can probably store 100K files in dir, but it will become unwieldy and slow to load when browsing a lot sooner. Just a dir per year probably solve any such problem.

mikae1··on Ask HN: Looking for headless CMS recommendation
Too bad it doesn't quite support dates in the dir paths.

I'd like to recommend a highly underappreciated single binary rewrite of Jekyll in Go: https://github.com/osteele/gojekyll

mikae1··on You shouldn't salt a leech that's sucking your blood (2019)
I used to burn off ticks with a lighter (revenge!) until I learned the same thing was true for them.

The risk of getting a disease is apparently higher if you handle them that way, essentially making it their revenge.
