mikae1··on Show HN: Vanilla OS 3 Reunion – Immutable and Reproducible Operating System
> Vanilla OS is built on Debian sid

Tuxedo settled for Testing. Reason for Sid?

> Additionally, with Vib (Vanilla Image Builder), anyone can customize their own system image, or even create their own distro with minimal effort.

This sounds very intriguing! Been using Aurora (Universal Blue) for years, but there's always a package or two you need to layer. Updates have crapped out more than once because of these packages. Been thinking that an easier way of creating custom images is the solution.

uBlue images are not effortless to create and maintain. Just installed plain Fedora two days ago for this reason.

Vanilla being GNOME by default has kept me from trying it. Plasma is so darn good these days.

Bogging down? I've been on almost 100% Flapaks for years and have never noticed any adverse effects.
mikae1··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
My point was that the risk of erasing all the trust built keeps a wise photographer from missteps.
mikae1··on The August 17 outage
That's how it's sold, but have you heard about any major tech company that sends their worker home when they've achieved what they used to achieve pre-AI?

EDIT: Instead of simply down-voting, you're welcome to name examples that proves me wrong ;)

mikae1··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
That's (sadly) a Swedish name, yes.
mikae1··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Because the photographer builds trust, over years, by not manipulating their images using AI. All trust is erased if anyone spots the manipulation.
mikae1··on 70% of AI revenue comes from OpenAI and Anthropic [video]
> most decently sized companies want to and eventually will be running their own LLM workloads

And probably some decently sized states too. Not only commercial actors are up to the job.

mikae1··on Qwen3.8 Max now ranked as the best overall model by agentic index
And at that cost they're still not profitable. It's going to be a bumpy road ahead...
mikae1··on Darktable
> but recently am moving off of it because they made one MASSIVE blunder with the new shitty color grading and white balancing tool

If you're talking about color calibration and color balance rgb you can disable them and use darktable exactly as before.

mikae1··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
Can you analyze the data your watch and body generates locally using FOSS without uploading it all to surveillance capitalists? That'd be the true alternative.
mikae1··on Using a Gaming PC's RTX 5070 from a separate Linux workstation
Same.
mikae1··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
Not talking about me or HN users in general. These companies likely need regular peeps to begin using their services in order to become profitable. Not sure these are the ones who will buy from OpenRouter.
mikae1··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
True. However, I believe most non-programmers don't need access to the fanciest model, but just want to use a good LLM without constant nagging about usage limits. Then 19 vs. 20 is true?
mikae1··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
For regular chat users it's $19 while Claude is $20...
mikae1··on Firefox 153.0 Beta
The first web browser was also an editor (albeit not for PDFs). Accessible editing was a part of was Berners-Lee's vision for the web.

> The first web browser - or browser-editor rather - was called WorldWideWeb as, after all, when it was written in 1990 it was the only way to see the web.[1]

Why does this show “Containers” under new? I've used this feature for years and years...
mikae1··on Qwen 3.8
> In any case, from this competition in LLMs, we win.

Do we really though? Everyone is wasting resources doing almost exactly the same thing. Climate loses, we lose.

mikae1··on Lobste.rs is now running on SQLite
> I guess most projects switching to SQLite have very low traffic and no malicious users (yet)

Lobsters is invite only. That helps. :)

mikae1··on CoMaps – FOSS Offline Maps

What problems exactly?

mikae1··on GLM 5.2 and the coming AI margin collapse
> Just spend $5 on OpenCode Go

$5 the first month, then price is doubled.

mikae1··on Meta loses bid to dismiss US states' claims that FB, Instagram addict children
What's funny is that I don't find fediverse apps like Mastodon to be less addictive. It could be because they (and the ActivityPub protocol) was modelled after commercial counterparts or that information foraging in an endless forest of data in itself is attractive to the human psyche.
mikae1··on Ford AI hiccups push carmaker to rehire ‘gray beard’ inspectors
> Claude, burning my company's money.

And the planet... While I experience some schadenfreude when reading these comments from programmers, I also can not help to wonder when this insanity will this end.

mikae1··on The unbearable cheapness of open weight models

mikae1··on Pinboard.in is not resolving DNS
Thanks! Just are reminder... For those using DoH, this is not going to help. If you use DoH in Firefox you'll have to edit network.trr.excluded-domains in about:config to include pinboard.in and do the /etc/hosts edit too.
mikae1··on The AV2 Video Standard Has Released (Final v1.0 Specification)
Depends on if you want lossy or lossless.
mikae1··on Phloto for My Photo Flow
WebP is pretty much equal to JPEGs via jpegli (for lossy compression). AVIF is better than WebP and jpegli JPEGs for lossy compression and supported pretty much everywhere now. AVIF is worse than WebP for lossless compression.

jpegli JPEGs will convert to lossy JPEG XL without generation loss when JPEG XL is more well supported.

mikae1··on Nitpicking the shell history scene in 'Tron: Legacy'
You're lucky if that's right. In Sweden there's no fair use of imagery at all. "Citaträtten" (the right to quote) only covers words.
