mik09··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
i did 7 questions and agreed with 29% of the majority. can see why i'm writing on some "reddit alternative" platforms as much as i'm writing on reddit.
mik09··on What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise?
Socrates love the gym, I cannot recall the exact remarks he said on it but something like this: https://www.artofmanliness.com/health-fitness/fitness/manvot...

Graham (inventor of Graham's number) also juggles quite well. A lot of mathematicians climb. His friend, Erdos do not exercise as much afaik from reading his biography (takes amphetamine...)

mik09··on Compiler Explorer
wow i first saw this on a small alternative reddit site. great to see it here and being this popular!
mik09··on Tell HN: Reddit accounts cancellation/suspension caused by VPN usage
i don't think you can post on 4chan using a vpn either.
mik09··on DeepMind’s new AI with a memory outperforms algorithms 25 times its size
oftentimes one can shrink a model down dramatically once one has a bigger, more robust model. but shrinking a huge model is still a great achievement.
mik09··on The Bastard Operator from Hell (1999)
reminds me of a ctf (overthewire - vortex level 16) that uses bofh to crack 100 out of 128 letters of a hash...come to think of it now i have more clues for this one.
mik09··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
I'm doing AI/ML type of work (computer vision). I think most of it boils down to efficient trial and error, and a good way of approaching the problem. A correct way is at least 10x more productive than an incorrect way for this job.
mik09··on Moiré No More
reviewed how fft works because of this, and made this demo for image fft (picture cropped from original passage): https://gist.github.com/mikelty/4553938523f0d1b0f4ee575a6241...

turns out skimage can do this, not just the 'special piece of software' mentioned in the article.

mik09··on Juul bought an entire issue of a scholarly journal
(scihub all the way)
mik09··on OpenHistoricalMap
not very related but i think our technology is at the brink of some actual psychohistory
mik09··on How Tech Loses Out
i think it's hegel that said 'through work, the slave becomes the master'. shocked to find this true in the modern corporate world. nice article.
mik09··on The “Granny Knot”
it's that shoelace site. i first heard of that site via youtuber mathloger.
mik09··on Gödel's Loophole
knew of this a long time ago, it's godel, what do you expect?
mik09··on Stallman isn't great, but not the devil
i was so shocked when i found the open letter project trending on top of the github chart.

i have a feeling that stallman promotes other stuff that many people don't really like, and they managed to cherry pick one thing about marvin minsky and focus all the fire on that. rms is some sort of bernie sanders with a technological brain. like aaron schwartz, he's pragmatic, and that is dangerous.

frankly, i just won't trust anything trending now as aaron schwartz's name was taken from the list of founders of reddit recently and reddit has gone... well there are threads and forums about that too.

mik09··on Reddit’s most popular subreddits go private in protest against ‘censorship’
a good place to check is who's investing in reddit for the last few years. spoiler alert it's not aaron schwartz. i've been shadowbanned from r/news quite a while ago and started engaging in other forums like saidit. saidit had a couple waves, i was kinda the first wave, eavding various reddit bans. that's about a year or two ago. then during the election there was a second wave, and then when r/superstraight got banned, another wave (sigh.) then when gab got attacked, when parler got nuked, we got more and more people.
mik09··on GitHub, fuck your name change
reminds me a passage in the opening chapters of the three-body problem: instead of maxwell equations, they called it electro-magnetic equations. (and so on.)

identity politics is basically infighting and it's not very productive as pointed out by some other comments.

mik09··on New algorithm breaks speed limit for solving linear equations
i don't totally underestand this, but looks similar to quadratic sieve. still this is amazing.
mik09··on Gradient Free Optimizers: A collection of modern optimization methods in Python
nice repo, i saw some comments expressing excitement and thought of the first time i saw pymoo, tpot, and finally automl. there are a lot of stuff laying around github but we just need to search better, like using topics (tags) and the gazer repo which kinda page-ranks the github repos.
mik09··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
are there any mirrors to youtube? i tried to search this but nothing promising showed up. i think this might be due to the sheer size of the video site. but is there a site that saves the newest videos for the last 3 days?
mik09··on Immortal Game
kinda reminds me of josh waitskin
