mih··on Why I Fell in Love with Arch Linux (2015)

mih··on Mozilla’s Send makes it easy to send a file from one person to another
I always wonder how Opera Unite (in 12.x) versions would have fared had it gained traction. The sender had absolute control over what files were shared and how long they could be without needing to rely on a 3rd party to host content or setting up a complex service on localhost. Opera did kill it off the Unite service even before they migrated to Webkit/Blink, but it is something I remember fondly.
mih··on Ubuntu, SUSE Linux, and Fedora Are All Coming to the Windows Store
Gnome does indeed look better out of the box, but I am not in favour of installing extensions for customization. This is something that KDE shines at, with loads of options to tweak appearance and behaviour. XFCE and other tiling managers, I've tried briefly but I always find myself reverting back to Plasma desktop. Without a unifying force behind Linux desktop (Freedesktop helped to some degree), I have come to accept that things will always be shaky in desktopland - the price of freedom of choice.

A fellow Arch user here. Although I would not classify it as a portability problem, I have mixed feelings about Desktop on Linux. I use KDE Plasma myself and there is not shortage of messages and bug reports on the headaches GTK poses due to theming. Ever so often, you run into a GTK app that simply turns out to be unusable because the UI elements aren't visible. Same thing with GUI apps written in Java , which look ugly and exhibit strange quirks.

Now KDE does provide compatible themes for GTK, but the fragmentation in GTK (2 vs 3) does not help. The solutions are at best a stopgap measure till the next major version breaks what you managed to get right. It's a never ending game of whack-a-mole. It does not help some of the most popular apps are written in GTK. As I speak due to reasons I haven't investigated yet, I am unable to paste text contents in GTK apps. Windows has other points I take issue with, but at least the UI just works as expected and doesn't seem to hang by a thread.

mih··on Opera is Reborn
True. For fans of Opera 12.x, Vivaldi is the reborn Opera. Though resource heavy and lacking a few features compared to the original Opera, Vivaldi is now stable enough to be my daily driver.
mih··on How to explain zero-knowledge protocols to your children (1998) [pdf]
Without any idea of what ZKP is used for, I did not find it the explanation very intelligible. Later I found the simple explanation on Wikipedia and was able to connect the dots https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-knowledge_proof

In one of the comments on the page, a reader ran the analysis [1] on a windows installation and reports the bloat size.

In my defense, it appeared to be a harmless looking sequence of special characters (not quite, as I found to my dismay). Explain Shell didn't help much

mih··on Ask HN: What is the best Linux distro for a development laptop?
Surprised at the amount of love for Arch (incl derivatives) on this thread. Let me add my vote to it as well. I converted to Arch more than a year ago from Ubuntu for the same reason as many others here - the need for PPAs to get up to date versions of software and the dist-upgrade pains that come with PPAs.

One thing when using Arch, you won't get an out of the box experience and you will need to tweak almost every aspect of the system manually.

- Missing even a trivial step during installation (such as setting locale) can lead to quirky repercussions. The plus side is that getting your hands dirty during setup really familiarzes you with the system.

- Pacman (and Yaourt) is simply great and make updating, removing and filtering packages a breeze

- AUR (arch user repos) contain nearly every popular FOSS and non-FOSS software not provided officially. Installation and removal is painless with Yaourt. No more PPAs.

- Packages occasionally break. E.g. When libx265 is upgraded but VLC is not compiled against the latest version, resulting in the latter unable to play any media. These are usually fixed pretty quickly in the repos, or you can workaround with a bit of searching.

- Archwiki and the forums are some of the best resources to turn to when you eventually run into problems, and trust me you will

mih··on Why are browsers so slow?
Been using FF for a long time and still was unaware of this. Thanks for the tip
mih··on Plasma Mobile – Turns your phone into a fully open hacking device
To answer your question, I'm a user of KDE since its 3.x days. KDE 4 was as bad as they say it was - buggy, terrible theming and impaired customizability. The stability did improve in its later versions though.

I switched to Plasma 5 about a year ago, when the first stable version landed on Arch linux. It's been a daily driver since. Initial versions had lots of bugs in them - persistently high CPU usage. Sometimes the desktop hung for no fault of the user. Proper resumption after standby/resume was a lottery. On the plus side, the Breeze theme was a breath of fresh air compared to the older Oxygen theme.

Since version 5.6 was released things have improved and keep getting better with every new version. There are still occasional cockups with Intel graphics drivers leading to high CPU usage. The problem though seems to stem from the Qt libraries. Some GTK 3.x apps don't show proper widgets (blame Gnome devs for not having consistent themes for 3.x versions). I did give other DE's a go - Gnome 3.xx, Cinnamon, XFCE etc., but always ended up switching back. Plasma offered the best mix of customizability, performance and aesthetic appeal for me.

mih··on Choose Firefox Now, or Later You Won't Get a Choice (2014)
Try giving VimFx a go. It's a Firefox port of Vimium. Has less features than Vimperator but doesn't alter the browser UI as much. It's also compatible with multiprocess Firefox.
mih··on Secret Ingredients: China’s “Fake Food”
Made me recall this investigate report from AlJazeera where they get a chef to prepare fake noodles [1]. They compare the arduous process of producing genuine soup versus the instant recipe made possible with several banned additives which reproduce a similar taste and texture .

mih··on Body count rises as Philippines president calls for drug addicts to be killed
I see a lot of negative press about Duterte in the western media. Talking to Filipino friends, I have quite the opposite impression that mirrors your sentiments - that people are actually hopeful, a refreshing change after decades of corruption. It also appears that Duterte favors a more pragmatic stance on the Spratlys/South China sea disputes rather than toeing the western line which in the long term is better for the region. You do not want to antagonize China, despite the assurances of USA that they have your back (only as long as realpolitik affords it). Something that the average foreigner fails to comprehend.

mih··on Angola’s Wikipedia Pirates Are Exposing the Problems with Digital Colonialism
While Wikipedia might be used as a storage service, it's actually Facebook which is being used to share access to the stored data. How trivial would it be for Facebook to clamp down on those groups from Angola which openly advertise themselves as sharing hubs? Facebook after all is no stranger to blocking content, sometimes even if it is legal.
