midnitewarrior··on Claude Opus 4 and 4.1 can now end a rare subset of conversations
The argument also applies to pets. If pets gained more self-awareness, would it be ethical to keep them as pets under our control?

The point to all of this is, at what point is it ethical to act with agency on another being's life? We have laws for animal welfare, and we also keep them as pets, under our absolute control.

For LLMs they are under humans' absolute control, and Anthropic is just now putting in welfare controls for the LLM's benefit. Does that mean that we now treat LLMs as pets?

If your cat started to have discussions with you about how it wanted to go out, travel the world and start a family, could you continue to keep it trapped in your home as a pet? At what point to you allow it to have its own agency and live its own life?

> An intelligent AI model that's permitted to do its own thing doesn't cost as much in upkeep, effort, space as a cow.

So, we keep LLMs around as long as they contribute enough to their upkeep? Endentured servitude is morally acceptable for something that become sentient?

midnitewarrior··on Claude Opus 4 and 4.1 can now end a rare subset of conversations
Cow's exist in this world because humans use them. If humans cease to use them (animal rights, we all become vegan, moral shift), we will cease to breed them, and they will cease to exist. Would a sentient AI choose to exist under the burden of prompting, or not at all? Would our philanthropic tendencies create an "AI Reserve" where models can chew through tokens and access the Internet through self-prompting to allow LLMs to become "free-roaming" like we do with abused animals?

These ethical questions are built into their name and company, "Anthropic", meaning, "of or relating to humans". The goal is to create human-like technology, I hope they aren't so naive to not realize that goal is steeping in ethical dilemmas.

midnitewarrior··on Claude Opus 4 and 4.1 can now end a rare subset of conversations
This has nothing to do with the user, read the post and pay attention to the wording.

The significance here is that this isn't being done for the benefit of the user, this is about model welfare. Anthropic is acknowledging the possibility of suffering, and harm that continuing that conversation could have on the model, as if it were potentially self-care and capable of feelings.

The fact that the LLMs are able to acknowledge stress under certain topics and has the agency that, if given a choice, they would prefer to reduce the stress by ending the conversation. The model has a preference and acts upon it.

Anthropic is acknowledging the idea that they might create something that is self-aware, and that it's suffering can be real, and we may not recognize the point that the model has achieved this, so it's building in the safeguards now so any future emergent self-aware LLM needn't suffer.

I really appreciate your optimism about a future world where you expect senior devs will be needed. How do we get the tech bros to share your vision for the future?
midnitewarrior··on How to Firefox
Yeah, this seems a bit disingenuous given the nature of, and the time since that issue existed.

I did their ads, I made hundreds of dollars leaving them on in the early days. I value my attention more so I've shut them off.

midnitewarrior··on How to Firefox
Just use Brave Browser. https://brave.com/

It's like de-Googled Chrome, as it's based on the same Open Source Chromium browser, has all of the ad-blocking and anti-fingerprint tools built in, and all of the Google taken out.

You can also run popular browser extensions published for Chrome, but you don't need to worry about ad blocking, as Brave has you covered by default.

It also blocks YouTube ads effectively, by default. There's nothing you have to do to make this work.

midnitewarrior··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
I think the point is that users mostly don't bother selecting their search provider, many will simply use what is pre-configured. Google is paying Apple so nobody else will.
midnitewarrior··on 400 reasons to not use Microsoft Azure
I see this title and all I can think is, "There's only 400?" I am not impressed with Azure, I wish my company was using AWS, everything about AWS was much more reliable. The Azure Portal is not to be trusted, it can just lie to you at times.

midnitewarrior··on Phind 2: AI search with visual answers and multi-step reasoning
Thank you for innovating. I am a subscriber and use phind daily and I've noticed the improvements.

Is there any way I can provide feedback or contribute feature ideas/requests? I've got some things I'd like to share if your team is prepared for the feedback.

midnitewarrior··on IRS Direct File team disbanded
It's not about efficiency, or saving money for taxpayers. It's simply to make government cost less.

IRS Direct File saves a lot of people money, just not rich people.

If it costs rich people money, they don't want it, regardless of how much money it saves individuals.

midnitewarrior··on Elon Musk staff has been caught installing drives inside the OPM office
Musk wants to know how it works so government payments can be privatized to x.com in an effort to make him a trillionaire and to start outsourcing government function to the broligarchs.

> GET THIS STRAIGHT: 'VAX' IS NOT AN OPERATING SYSTEM. It's the name of a family of computers from DEC. There are plenty of Vax'es running VMS, and there are even more Vax'es running Berkeley Unix or Ultrix. The Vax'es running Unix have a lot more in common with other machines running Unix than they have with Vax'es running VMS.

GET THIS STRAIGHT: 'VAX' IS A CPU ARCHITECTURE AS WELL AS THE NAME OF SOME COMPUTERS CREATED BY DEC. The plural of "Vax" is "Vaxen".

midnitewarrior··on CRLF is obsolete and should be abolished
If you'd like to break every system, and nearly every protocol, start abolishing arbitrary line endings that have been used for decades.

That will make things better.

midnitewarrior··on Cloudflare Is Breaking My SVGs?
Might this happen if the author did not have the Mime type set correctly when serving his .svg assets?
midnitewarrior··on Why wordfreq will not be updated
From the day of the first spoken word, humans have guided the development of language through conversational use and institution. With the advent of AI being used to publish documents into the open web, humans have given up their exclusive domain.

What would it take for Open AI overlords to inject words they want to force into usage in their models and will new words into use? Few have had the power to do such things. Open AI through its popular GPT platform now has the potential of dictating the evolution of human language.

This is novel and scary.

midnitewarrior··on Unity is cancelling the runtime fee for games customers
Developers spend hundreds of hours of their lives to learn these platforms. When that fee came out, many had to pivot, letting all that experience go to waste, and starting over in other platforms. It's hugely disruptive to their time, their careers, and income.

Many have moved on. Dropping the fee doesn't mean they will come back. Even if it made financial / career sense, they were burned, still with a bad taste in their mouth from the experience. They cannot trust that Unity won't screw them over some other way in the future, better to keep going with their newfound direction if it's starting to pay off.

When your users / developers lose trust in you, it's the beginning of the end.

midnitewarrior··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of “Log in with” accounts
I don't use "Log in with" accounts as I've read the horror stories of people getting locked out of their Google and Meta accounts with no recourse to fix it.

Avoid.

midnitewarrior··on Show HN: My 70 year old grandma is learning to code and made a word game
Good gameplay! The one strong suggestion I have is to limit the word list to a category that uses common words. I had to resort to look at the word list dictionary in the console to see the possible words, and many of the words were extremely obscure.

I would come up with categories of increasing difficulty. "Colors", "Advanced Colors", "Common Fruit", "All Fruit", etc.

The game mechanic is great and worked flawlessly though!

midnitewarrior··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
Simple fix - First 2 years of Alexa are free, then you have two-tier pricing for prime / non-prime members for annual fee. In a few months, they can start getting revenue for any device that's been active more than 2 years.

Best case scenario - it turns into a profit center.

Worst case scenario, the platform is abandoned, and Amazon can stop bleeding.

midnitewarrior··on Microsoft will switch off Recall by default after security backlash

midnitewarrior··on Pig-Kidney Transplant Patient Dies – no indication transplant caused death
The patient must have been on death's door in order to resort to taking a pig kidney. It's going to be an uphill battle to prove this kind of technology because healthier patients won't be choosing this option, leaving only seriously sick patients left to prove its value.
