I think the most glaring oversight in the headline is that Miles Davis was a trumpet player.

midgetjones··on Ask HN: Does anyone use an alternative to a password manager?
I have one of these. I personally never use it due to the inconvenience, but it might work for you.

midgetjones··on Parsons code
Time signature and key are totally irrelevant to the task of identifcation. Interval could be important, but vastly complicates the matter - identifying intervals is hard enough for many competent musicians.
midgetjones··on Pencil and Paper Games
"Heads Bodies & Legs" is great fun, especially if the other person is similarly puerile.

One that I don't see - or maybe I don't know what I'm looking for - is "Fish, Fruit, Flower"[0], which we used to play as a family when I was young.

I did, of course, mean idiosyncratic. My bad
midgetjones··on The Land of Lisp
I've read this book, and what I love about it is that it really brings to mind the programming books of my youth, when nobody would argue that programming should be fun.

It's goofy, has bad jokes, and you learn something.

Having said that, the code style seemed quite idiomatic compared to some of the other Lisp I've seen (although I'm no expert), so I wasn't sure how valuable the lessons were.

midgetjones··on ThinkPad Anniversary Edition 25: Limited Edition ThinkPad Goes Retro
The keyboard and the aspect ratio, although I now realise this new version doesn't feature the latter.

I do have plenty of old thinkpads, but I've never tried getting any modern components into one.

midgetjones··on Practicing Elixir or any programming language
Good point! If you're going to pattern match in the initial string then who even needs the second function?

    def convert("12:" <> <<m::bytes-size(2)>> <> ":" <> <<s::bytes-size(2)>> <> "AM") do
      "00:#{m}:#{s}"
    end

    def convert(<<h::bytes-size(2)>> <> ":" <> <<m::bytes-size(2)>> <> ":" <> <<s::bytes-size(2)>> <> "PM") do
      h = 12 + String.to_integer(h)
      "#{h}:#{m}:#{s}"
    end

    def convert(<<h::bytes-size(2)>> <> ":" <> <<m::bytes-size(2)>> <> ":" <> <<s::bytes-size(2)>> <> "AM") do
      "#{h}:#{m}:#{s}"
    end

Whether that's an improvement or not is another matter :)

midgetjones··on Practicing Elixir or any programming language
If the formatted_hour functions were larger or shared some amount of code, I wouldn't have suggested it ;)
midgetjones··on Practicing Elixir or any programming language
Great article, thanks!

I'm not an expert Alchemist by any means, but whenever I see a `cond`, I try to see if it can be refactored out using pattern matching (after I was picked up on the same thing during an interview!)

   defp formatted_hour("AM", "12"),  do: "00"
   defp formatted_hour("AM", hours), do: hours
   defp formatted_hour("PM", "12"),  do: "12"
   defp formatted_hour("PM", hours), do: 12 + String.to_integer(hours)
midgetjones··on Firefox marketshare revisited
> If you buy into the Google Suite then you get synched profiles. Firefox has the same but the account is only useful for keeping Firefox in sync whereas Google's also give you access to all their other products, plus oauth to third party services.

That's the exact reason some of us avoid Chrome :)

midgetjones··on Show HN: Cinc – GitHub for recipes
I think this is a brilliant idea, but I wonder if the terminology should be changed? I think the concept of saving a copy of a recipe, then editing it would come much more naturally to the 99% of people who have never heard of github.

midgetjones··on Show HN: A Webapp to Auto Apply for Jobs
Well done on building this, it's an interesting idea. Where did the numbers come from on the homepage?

I only ask because your personal account of 100+ jobs, at 5 mins per application, doesn't seem like the best approach to me. When I was jobseeking, I'd research every job description & company thoroughly first, and if it seemed like somewhere I'd want to work then I'd spend probably 20 minutes or so writing a cover letter that came across as personal.

I'm sure our experiences aren't apples-to-apples, but I definitely got a very high response rate from taking this approach.

midgetjones··on Show HN: HNfavorites – Explore the community's favorite content
That would be great, although personally speaking I like to keep all my bookmarks in one place, so it wasn't that useful for me. However, I do favourite particularly interesting comments sometimes, and would love to see what other people have saved as very often they're more interesting than the link itself.
midgetjones··on Show HN: HNfavorites – Explore the community's favorite content
Cool project!

I'd take issue with the claim that "the feature has had a good amount of adoption", though. The top result only has 41 favourites despite ~800 points.
