midasuni··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Ddg reckons average mailman salary is about 50k. That’s 1/8th the average house price.

In 1990 it was about 25k with prices about 150k

House prices are about 100k too high, they should be 300k not 400k

One reason for this is more people rely on two incomes to pay for housing, so more money is available for housing, so money transfers from future debt of millenials to existing assets of boomers and gen x.

But on top of that it means two incomes means harder to have kids due to child care.

That’s a pretty low level. That’s lower than my pi hole. But I wouldn’t consider my pihole to be anything other than best endeavours (99.1%). Two would be fine, but there are common points of failure which would limit the solution

I’m paranoid about environmental situations so always have a failover, but then my DR plans include events such as “Thames barrier fails”.
midasuni··on Waymo car vandalized and lit on fire in San Francisco
No I don’t, I live in a small village. A taxi service would be brilliant, my son could get to scouts and back under his own steam. Automated or manual doesn’t matter, but we can’t sustain a taxi service.l - there’s one in a town about 6 miles away. One taxi.

They also rely on a lot of people travelling from a small area to a small area. The square mile around me has fewer than 4 journeys an hour to anywhere, so how does that work with anything other than an automated taxi or at most minibus?

HN is on a pair of servers.

You really need two in physically different locations (ideally ASes) with some form of failover, assuming you want a reasonable guaranteed uptime
midasuni··on Why we can’t build family-sized apartments in North America
If the rentable price was 6k one year and 5k the next then you’d simply pay less rent for the land.
midasuni··on EU coal and gas collapse as wind and solar ascend
How many people have their own oil pump in the back yard? And are self sufficient with food?

No man is an island.

In an extreme situation when you have no grid for a week then yes, having to slum it by only heating one room.

Every house having 50kwh would allow massive grid smoothing when wind and solar are fluctuating. Just one day of storage would allow a lot of arbitrage, but when power is cheap overnight and run solely off battery when it’s expensive.

I’m not even sure what I used, it’s the same 5 lines I’ve used for years. Boom bang and on to the next problem.

For every unicorn saas webapp $300k a year developers are writing there’s a thousand small pages. If you’re building a house you aren’t going to use a Swiss Army knife, but if you’re camping out for a couple of days you aren’t going to take a van full of power tools.

midasuni··on EU coal and gas collapse as wind and solar ascend
I remember headline news when a village in my country was cut off for 36 hours. 5 days without grid is unthinkable.
midasuni··on EU coal and gas collapse as wind and solar ascend
Make them realistic
midasuni··on EU coal and gas collapse as wind and solar ascend
50kWh of battery is quite cheap compared with a house and will keep you going a long time without grid power

I don’t get Fukushima driving a worry about nuclear but not about tsunami or earthquake which killed orders of magnitude more and caused Fukushima in the first place.
midasuni··on jQuery v4.0 Beta
Yesterday I wrote a custom page which dumped out a table for some investigation. I threw jquery and a tablesorter plug-in. Without JS you get the table, but with you can easily sort and filter. Took about 2 minutes to add the optional filter. The backend is bash of course.
midasuni··on NetBox: a source of truth for everything on your network
A source of truth should only be changed based on a deliberate controlled action. Your VM shouldn’t be changing IPs, if “somebody” changes it you have a chaotic network and you just want a network discovery tool.

The change to the VM’s IP should be done through an auditable change process (like a pull request). If the VM doesn’t match the source of truth, the VM is wrong, not the source of truth.

That PR process would also update your telegraf plugins to ensure that the new IP is being monitored etc.

Net is won’t change the process, your automation (an ansible playbook perhaps) would do the change based on the information in the source of truth

Now it’s possible you only have a couple dozen hosts and a handful of networks and thus your source of truth could be an inventory file, that’s a reasonable solution. When you have dozens or hundreds of switches and hosts in the thousands or more range, I would prefer to have a UI wrapped around that file though, with various links between different locations, switch ports, MDU outputs, etc, that’s where netbox comes in. Your grafana dashboard can take the physical location and tie in with your various monitoring (host and environment) to identify a problem in a specific part of your data centre quickly and reliably, as netbix knows what rack the host is in, what switch it’s connected to, etc

midasuni··on NetBox: a source of truth for everything on your network
Your ansible (salt, chef, whatever) inventories should be generated from your source of truth, then when they run they should apply against your infrastructure.

You shouldn’t be able to make any changes without driving them through the source of truth.

I think Germany was orange.

Certainly not clear if I should put North Korea or South Korea.

midasuni··on Show HN: Name That Nation

midasuni··on Destruction of nuclear bombs using ultra-high energy neutrino beam (2003) [pdf]
If you can travel between solar systems and have enough resources that you want to conquer (not just render inhabitable) a gravity well then you likely don’t need to worry about nukes - point defences will be able to detect and neutralise them before they got anywhere near your ship

Given it just needs to be done once, and a hdcp stripping device is easy to get, how does that work?
midasuni··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
But if I wanted to do something other than watch the film why wouldn’t I just download it from a “pirate” site?

What is the benefit to the rights holder in having a “secure device”

midasuni··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
Drove me away. Increasing the price on my yearly renewal wouldn’t have been noticed. Sending me adverts means Amazon have lost out on far more than my cancelled prime subscription - I haven’t bought anything from them, and that’s over $100 a month revenue lost.

midasuni··on Oxford PV sets new solar panel efficiency world record
What’s the cost of domestic installation on a new house? I was looking at some builders adding a roof the other day, putting panels on at the same time wouldn’t add much in labour.

Ok, I’ll bite. What do you do? Your phone has just told you the fridge door is open. Now what? You aren’t at home, so you can’t close it.

“You are missing Evards brand milk, buy Evards for that fresh taste, I’ve added it to your list for you”

Any potential benefit from such a device would be destroyed by the cancerous advertising industry.
