microflash··on Fixrleak: Fixing Java Resource Leaks with GenAI
Can we not solve this by an OpenRewrite recipe?

https://docs.openrewrite.org

microflash··on Show HN: Journelly for iOS: like tweeting but for your eyes only (in plain text)
Looks interesting. How do I try this out?

Before someone suggests to purchase and ask refund if things don’t work out, Apple has been flat out rejecting my refund requests despite genuine justifications for many recent purchases.

microflash··on Apple Shortcuts is falling into "the automation gap"
It is for me. Apparently you can’t turn on Wifi Hotspot on a single tap on iOS, or switch off Bluetooth or Wifi completely on iOS so a few shortcuts to do these in control center it is.
microflash··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
The right tool for a given problem is usually much more ergonomic and productive. To me purism of language or tooling is a disservice to an engineer’s instinct of solving a problem. Use Python where it is a strong option. Use Spring Boot where it makes sense.

BTW, I’m also on a similar trajectory using a mix of Java, Python and Node.js to solve different problems. It has been very pleasant experience compared to if I had been bullish on just one of these languages and platforms.

microflash··on Strings Just Got Faster
I have done it multiple times for different versions of Java with nominal effort. Of course, difficulty may vary depending on a project.

With projects like OpenRewrite [1] and good LLMs, things are a lot easier these days.

microflash··on Apple App Store guidelines remove ban on encouraging external payments in US
There are plenty of scam apps in App Store so this is doing nothing new.
microflash··on Redis is open source again
Due to license rug pull, I started an org wide movement from Redis to Valkey early this year and now there’s no turning back. It also does not help Redis that Valkey is cheaper offering by AWS (at least through Elasticache).
microflash··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
There’s open source Unwatched[1] if you want something for free.

microflash··on Firefox tab groups are here
Been using vertical tabs to avoid floating toolbar gymnastics while sharing screen on Microsoft Teams. It’s been working great and now I don’t miss the horizontal tabs.
microflash··on Show HN: GS-Calc – A modern spreadsheet with Python integration
These days I use DuckDB to read massive excel files. DuckDB now ships with a nice local UI and it also works beautifully with Datagrip, my preferred database IDE. With SQL, it just becomes a matter of applying old grease to do whatever analysis I want.
microflash··on Your phone isn't secretly listening to you, but the truth is more disturbing
We’ve reached the state where you can safely presume anything “smart” is violating your privacy.
microflash··on Sapphire: Rust based package manager for macOS (Homebrew replacement)
There’s also `cart` : https://github.com/heywoodlh/cart

I especially like their claim of being unprivileged. Very early stages just like Sapphire.

microflash··on I just got an ad in VS Code
Once? There’s no “once”. It’s “Sign up” or “Maybe later”.
microflash··on Show HN: Particle - News, Organized
Just reading through privacy policy brings bile in my throat. https://particle.news/privacy

My RSS reader collects no personal data, thank you very much.

microflash··on The best programmers I know
dayjs is a similar library that I’ve used to replace Moment with minimal effort.
microflash··on Hiding elements that require JavaScript without JavaScript
This is how `noscript` tags are hidden by UA styles.

microflash··on Blender-made movie Flow takes Oscar
I adored this film. We have three generations at home with different depths of expertise in different languages and this transcended all those barriers making it so very enjoyable experience to watch together. Truly a family friendly film at so many levels.
microflash··on Apple Debuts iPhone 16e
Kinda disappointing on all three fronts I was hoping there could be some improvement: size, weight, price.

With medical conditions affecting my muscle strength, I wish phones would get a bit lighter. Glass sandwich form factor is unnecessarily heavy and fatigues my arms.

microflash··on A year of uv: pros, cons, and should you migrate
uv has been fantastic for most of my personal projects. It feels so much smoother than any other python tooling combo I tried in past. That said, it just does not work well behind corporate proxies. This is single most annoying thing that has stopped me from recommending it at work.
microflash··on Google will use machine learning to estimate a user's age
The announcement is buried here: https://blog.google/technology/families/google-new-built-in-...
microflash··on YouTube's New Hue
For me, that gradient translates to “cheap”, from the gradient back of cheap Android phones and really badly dyed cheap curtains.
microflash··on Apple Invites
Yeah, that’s a dealbreaker right there. On a positive note, hopefully, this will be enough impedance to prevent widespread adoption in my social circle.
microflash··on Tapestry by Iconfactory
A typical playbook of many iOS and macOS apps: crippled free version as a vehicle for subscriptions, with an extremely expensive lifetime offering that takes a decade to break even (very few apps make over a decade, a lot many just change the TOS to pretend lifetime plan did not exist in the first place after a few years of offering them).

On the first blush, there’s a hint of promise. I like that I can add both plain RSS and podcasts (have yet to find an RSS reader that handles podcast feeds seamlessly). Many other players (Reeder [1] and Surf [2]) are attempting to tackle similar usecase.

microflash··on Don't make fun of renowned author Dan Brown (2013)
Ah, the infamously quoted source of “pulchritudinous”
microflash··on Oracle Cloud deleting active user accounts without possibility for data recovery
> no matter the reason never work with oracle

I wholeheartedly agree on this. I had the misfortune of working with an unholy combination of ODI [1], OBP [2], and Oracle Database several years ago. The amount of layers of abstraction and bureaucracy I had to wade through to get things done was enormous and life-draining. Since then, I have made sure to move teams away from Oracle wherever I could and not once have I regretted doing so.

microflash··on I still like Sublime Text
This is what I use. Unfortunately, when I’m doing a search and replace, the search results don’t update automatically once I’ve edited a file.

But thank you for replying. I’ll hop into Discord eventually.

microflash··on I still like Sublime Text
Are there are plans to improve Search UI and make sidebar more capable. I really like the way VSCode’s search interface where results are listed on sidebar and clicking an item opens the file in the editor.

Regardless of the above experience, Sublime Text is still my daily driver since 2012. Nothing has come close to it.

microflash··on A feature-rich Hacker News client
Pretty nice but unfortunately scroll performance is extremely choppy like many other Flutter apps. Also, like many other Flutter apps, it can’t use system font stack. Still, on iOS, this is probably a better option than many other open source clients. On Android, I like Glider[1] and Harmonic[2] a whole lot more.

microflash··on Show HN: Struggle with CSS Flexbox? This Playground Is for You
I have found Grid by Example[1] by Rachel Andrew pretty useful to learn and use Grid.

microflash··on Ghostty 1.0
Have set it up with Nushell. It’s pretty fast while displaying really long log files. Going to sit alongside iTerm2 until I get comfortable with it.

The only things I miss are (1) right click to copy paste selection (akin to Putty), and (2) profiles (I work with different shells depending on my projects and use Profiles frequently on iTerm2)
