microflash··on Show HN: Rails UI
My apologies if this came off as too condescending and harsh. I’m coming from the receiving end of an app which uses Tailwind and many developers run wild with class-soup in their changes, causing all sorts of inconsistency.

Still, does not justify the caustic comment. And I’ll be spending this entire weekend obsessing on how to do better.

microflash··on Show HN: Rails UI
Is this another Tailwind wrapper? Yes, it is.
microflash··on Show HN: Mastra 1.0, open-source JavaScript agent framework from the Gatsby devs
Language, although an important factor, should not be the only factor to decide using a tool. I'm curious is there something unique Mastra is bringing to the table, compared to other alternatives.

Why should I use this over say Strands Agents [1] or Spring AI [2]?

microflash··on Instabridge has acquired Nova Launcher
What an undeserving fate. A beloved app now being passed from vulture to vulture who rip off every possible morsel they can.

When Branch bought Nova, I moved on to use Lawnchair [1], which is open source. Although it has been in beta like forever, with occasional glitches, it works well enough and has enough features to satisfy my customization cravings.

microflash··on Why DuckDB is my first choice for data processing
I've been using DuckDB to process massive Excel files. Despite weird quirks [1], it has been great experience so far. I now use it to process CSV, JSON, Parquet files. It is very fast, and extremely approachable, thanks to SQL being the language for interaction.

microflash··on Why DuckDB is my first choice for data processing
Familiarity with SQL is a plus in my opinion. Also, DuckDB has SDKs in more languages compared to Polars.
microflash··on Dell admits consumers don't care about AI PCs
After using several Precisions at work, I now firmly believe that Dell does not know how to cool their workstations properly. They are all heavy, pretty bad at energy efficiency and run extremely hot (I use my work machine laid belly up in summer since fans are always on). I’d take a ThinkPad or Mac any day over any Dell.
microflash··on The unbearable joy of sitting alone in a café
I used to do this so often during my university days. In today's attention-starved ecosystem, drift is such a luxury. There's this urge to fill the gap, with scrolling on our phones, impulse shopping online, or just opening and closing the apps. We've subscribed to the fear of missing out, of being out of touch, of being left behind.

Drifting is a way to push all that feedback in the background. It does not necessarily have to be a staycation at a cafe. It can be a walk in a park, a morning jog with a friend who's comfortable with your silence, a book reading session in the twilight. We need to slow down and relax to truly appreciate the pace of life, and drifting is such an awesome way to do it. Lovely post. It reminded me of good times in the past, and that I need to make time for them in future.

microflash··on Clicks Communicator
This has been my complaint as well. I didn't realize how stiff those keys were when I recently got to try it.
microflash··on Clicks Communicator
It is supposed to run Android, so if you need another client, it might be as easy as installing it through an APK.
microflash··on The Rise of SQL:the second programming language everyone needs to know
SQL is such a joy to work with compared to all the baggage ORMs bring. I’m not against ORMs but I like to keep them as thin as possible (mostly to map columns to data objects). I’ve been happily using JDBC and Spring Data JDBC (when I needed to use Repository pattern) for a long time in Java.
microflash··on Pop _OS 24.04's New Scratch-Built Cosmic: Hands-On, with Screenshots
Since when did “scratch-built” become equivalent to “built from scratch”? As a non-native English speaker, do I need some more English classes?

Cosmic looks very interesting and very unfinished. Maybe it is the teal accent, maybe it is janky transitions. Nonetheless, I’m happy to see some fresh Linux Desktop Environment.

microflash··on Google releases its new Google Sans Flex font as open source
There’s also Google Sans Code, the monospace companion of Google Sans family.

microflash··on Tell HN: It's now impossible to disable all AI features in Firefox 145 (latest)
Seems whatever I had disabled earlier is still disabled on my install of FF 145.

I do have these additional settings.

browser.ml.chat.maxLength=0 browser.ml.chat.prompt.prefix="{}" browser.ml.chat.prompts.0="{}" browser.ml.chat.prompts.1="{}" browser.ml.chat.prompts.3="{}" browser.ml.chat.prompts.4="{}" browser.ml.chat.shortcuts.custom=false browser.ml.linkPreview.longPress=false browser.ml.modelHubRootUrl="example.com"

microflash··on WBlock: A New Ad-Blocker for Safari
Been using wBlock for a while. It blocks ads pretty well, supports custom blocklists and userscripts and does get rid of entire DOM nodes containing ad elements instead of leaving annoying empty elements. Compared to Adguard, you do lose cosmetic filtering but gain better battery life.
microflash··on Unofficial Microsoft Teams client for Linux
You can still dodge the bullet by saying this is an “unofficial” client using which may violate an unknown amount of compliance bullet points.
microflash··on Spec-Driven Development: The Waterfall Strikes Back
This is how I approach my stories as well. I used to call this “action plan” way before it became fashionable with the rise of AI agents.

It helps me not only reduce the complexity into more manageable chunks but go back to business team for smoothening the rough edges which would otherwise require a rework after review.

microflash··on Winamp clone in Swift for macOS
I’ve been using Jewelcase for a while. https://apps.apple.com/in/app/jewelcase/id6642683626
microflash··on Affinity Studio now free
I loved Affinity v1 suite's offline activation model. Sadly that changed in v2 and the same thing is happening now.

Is there any hope to enable activating v2 offline? That way I can still install and use it when you eventually shutdown the activation server.

microflash··on Affinity Studio now free
tldr;

It is all apps combined in one. It is free. Requires Canva account. AI features require Canva Premium subscription. No iPad app (yet). Still missing RTL support.

microflash··on uBlock Origin Lite in Apple App Store
I’ve been using wBlock and it is fantastic. It supports nearly identical functionality as compared to uBlock Origin Lite.
microflash··on Samsung makes ads on smart fridges official with upcoming software update
At this point, anything from Samsung is a vehicle for ads, and anything with the word “smart” from Samsung is most likely a spyware. The amount of garbage I had to remove from a recently encountered Galaxy phone is on par with Windows 11 levels and some.

Unfortunately, the entire industry is racing toward this behavior. Recent LGs have also started slapping “AI” stickers on their products. I’ve been visiting Rossman’s Consumer Wiki[1] more often than I’d like before making a purchase.

microflash··on Normalize.css
At this point, writing a reset is kind of rite of passage for a web developer.

Here’s mine[1] which I wrote while working on multilingual projects involving both Latin and non-Latin languages.

microflash··on Advice for new principal tech ICs (i.e., notes to myself)
This is just another stereotype. I’ve seen plenty of managers struggling to form coherent communication where an engineer would express with perfect ease. The problem with communication comes when you add layers of bureaucracy between people, often under the guise that engineers can’t communicate.
microflash··on LineageOS 23
Your Chrome-based browser might be blocking the port that adb uses.
microflash··on DataGrip Is Now Free for Non-Commercial Use
Also relevant to this change is JetBrains Policy on data collection for AI training: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45440117

> For individuals on non-commercial licenses: Data sharing is enabled by default, but you can turn it off anytime in the settings.

microflash··on Java 25 officially released
As someone who has seen awful code in pretty much every language I've worked with, I'd blame this more on inertia and reluctance to change habits. The bad patterns that have entrenched deep into the ecosystem are very hard to shed even when the language and platform is making progress at impressive speed.
