mickeyben··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2017)
Drivy | Paris, France on site | Full-time | Android Engineer | https://en.drivy.com/jobs | https://drivy.engineering

We believe shared cars are a better way to move around, offering more flexibility and more convenience.

We are already the #1 car rental marketplace in Europe, and we believe the adoption will be 100 times larger in just a few years. We are present in several countries, have great mobile apps, and kick-ass hardware. And we're just getting started.

We're looking for someone who is not only well versed in Android development, but also has a strong understanding of good UX.

mickeyben··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2015)
Drivy | Paris, France | Backend / Fullstack

Our goal is to replace car ownership by a better service: shared cars available at every corner will offer the flexibility and proximity of ownership without the burden of maintenance.

We already have a significant traction and rank #1 worldwide on the market of peer-to-peer car rental, but we believe the adoption should be 100 times larger in just a few years.

We're currently looking for Backend, Fullstack and Data engineers to join our tech team in Paris.

Positions are detailed here: https://en.drivy.com/jobs

If it sounds like something interesting to you, please contact me directly via michael+jobs@drivy.com

About remote work: it is possible, but we strongly favor applicants who can come to Paris (at least a few days per month).

mickeyben··on Show HN: EDB – A framework to make and manage backups of your database
I've recently created a similar tool at our company.

We found out that dumping the database table by table in a parallelized way is much faster than a full database mysqldump.

There's also mysqlpump soon available in mysql 5.7 to replace mysqldump and works in parallel.

mickeyben··on ThingieQuery: a SQL plugin for Excel
It looks great. Too bad it's Windows only.

The preview of excel 2016 for mac is pretty good and some of our marketing staff are contemplating the idea of migrating to mac.

Congrats on the launch, I'm not an excel user myself but I've sent the link to some of my coworkers and they look excited :D

mickeyben··on How to Generate Millions of HTTP Requests (2012)
One tool I used a lot recently is vegeta [1]. It can be used both as a cli and a go library. You can generate html (with nice plotting), csv or json reports and launch distributed attacks.

mickeyben··on This French tech school has no teachers, no books, no tuition
I was graduated from Epitech and it's right the background in cs theory is very poor but the goal isn't to create monkey coders.

The goal of this school and by extension of 42 (the school mentioned in the OP link) is to create real hackers, people able to learn by themselves. Most of the projects are coding projects right but it's oriented in a way that forces you to learn all along the way if you want to succeed. Learn from internet, books or your peers. RTFM is the motto of the school.

You'd be surprised by what the students are able to achieve.

If that matters some Epitech students work in very successful companies (fb, twitter, google or microsoft) and the Docker founders were in Epitech.

mickeyben··on Ship Code Faster: Announcing GitHub Integration GA
But how can I be notified of the fail?

When I deploy I don't look at the dashboard, I go back to business until my CI tell me deployment succeeded or failed.

mickeyben··on Ship Code Faster: Announcing GitHub Integration GA
> If an issue is encountered during a Heroku deployment, be it manual or automatic, you can always rollback to the last known good release from either the CLI or in Dashboard.

How do you know if the build failed other than looking at the dashboard?

When deploying through the CLI, I can check the exit status of the command so my CI can take care of it and notify me of any issue.

mickeyben··on A History of Programming Games 1961-1989
We used to have Core War tournaments in college. It was first an assignment (write the VM) and at the end all the students warriors would compete vs each other and we watched the finals in the big amphi. One of the students even wrote an opengl visualization. Great memories!
mickeyben··on Rails 3.2 Performance: Another Step Slower
Did you try to remove the parts of Rails you don't need? (ex: middlewares).

Also in New Relic you can look what's slower (ruby, db, rendering, request queuing, ...). Could you give us more details.

Also your average is 423ms, but what's fastest pages like?

mickeyben··on France Bashing Is So 2012 (Here Is Why)
Don't know about that.

According to Glassdor the average salary is about €39k[1]. In my experience a "good" salary for a french engineer is between €42-50k. Housing isn't cheap in Paris - count about 12k-18k for 430-650 sqft. Going out isn't cheap either.

I've lived a year in SF and had definitely a better [salary]/[cost of life]. It was 5 years ago though.

mickeyben··on Show HN: Instagram and Facebook Photos Delivered Monthly

If I had children (!) I'd love to have photos sent to my relatives every month.

mickeyben··on HNWatcher: track keywords and follow users on Hacker News
I've been using it for the past week and it's great.

If you wish to get alerts for your brand and receive the HN link while it's hot it's the perfect tool.

mickeyben··on Ask HN: What exception tracking service do you use?
We stopped getting exceptions a dozen times from a few hours to a couple of days. And no the exceptions didn't came up after that delay, it's like they were never sent.
mickeyben··on Ask HN: What exception tracking service do you use?
Don't know which is best but we used airbrake and getexceptional in the past and it had massive issues. We now use BugSnag on 4 rails apps (ruby and js) + one node.js app and it just works.
mickeyben··on Book discovery service: No Names. No Jackets
I spend about 1 hour a week at the bookstore, usually taking random books and reading the first page(s).

I also try to discover new books on Amazon from time to time by going over their selections and recommendations but I end up reading the same circle of authors.

I think your idea is brilliant by matching my IRL process. I wish you a lot of success.

EDIT: about the website itself it's nicely done, minimalist and easy. I'd change the "Choose a genre" button to a dropdown. Also I'd have the top navigation (the exploration/submit buttons) merged with the right one with the menu following the scroll. This would be a a good incentive to navigate around (easier and faster too).

mickeyben··on Ask HN: How did you make your first $10,000?
It was in 2006, I needed some cash to pay my student loans.

At the time I was all about C++, wasn't very good at it and couldn't find any part time job to continue my CS degree.

One of my contacts proposed me a freelance gig to rewrite the intranet of a big french corp. It was written in ASP.net 1.0 and only worked on IE. I didn't want to take the job but when they offered me 5,000$ I said yes without knowing what I was doing.

After some consulting with friends I went with PHP5, smarty and prototypejs. It took me a month of days and nights instead of the 15 days initially planned but it was a blast! PHP, javascript, HTML ... found all this new world way more funny and productive than C++,boost and wxWidgets/GTK.

Since then, I learned to plan things more carefully (especially when I don't know the tech) and never stopped coding and working for the web.

mickeyben··on HipChat is now free for teams of 5 users or fewer
HipChat has an API and a lot of services proposes hooks to post to HipChat. Our "Saloon" usually looks along the line of :

GitHub - yoktan pushed to branch master of xxx/frontend - Txt (c7bd9a3)

Jenkins - backend-master - #481 FAILURE after 3 min 18 sec (Open)

mickeyben··on Show HN: JackDB Cloud - Database development in the cloud.
It's not clear what kind of visualizations you support. You should add a few screenshots.

It looks like http://chartio.com/

You seem to do the exact same thing but you worded it differently.

mickeyben··on Raygun.io - cloud error logging
We've been using bugsnag for a couple of months and it's really good. Their support is great, they're iterating fast and I never saw their backend stop getting the errors (as opposed to airbrake or exceptional).
mickeyben··on Squash
Thanks for pointing this out. Definitely worth reading.
mickeyben··on Diaspora Co-Founder Helps Startups Keep Kickstarter Backers Happy
> sends an email to your backers with a unique sign-up link

That's a pretty cool feature. We kind of built this at Let It Cast to handle "The Canyons" movie campaign. We allowed some backers to vote for the cast.

We lost a good amount of time dealing with that... I wish we had this at this time.

I was really shoked seeing Kickstarter doesn't come with an API or a web tool but a csv export.

mickeyben··on Ask HN: What unknown technical blogs or sites do you read?
Awesome blog!

Nice to see some people from EPITA doing cool stuff :-)

mickeyben··on Rails Environment Variables
We're using this in development, staging and test. But only in some circonstances.

In development if we need to try something without cache, and in staging and tests for some tests runner (integration tests, QA crawlers, ...).

mickeyben··on Rails Environment Variables
I love this hack. We're using it a lot at our company.

exemple:

  if ENV["NO_REDIS_CACHE"]
    config.cache_store = :null_store
  else
    config.cache_store = :redis_store
  end
