mickdarling··on Nanofiche: Small Storage, for Forever
My favorite head slapping dumb part about Microsoft’s Silica is the goofy little robots that are the only means to find unlabeled, unadorned identical glass slabs. No human readable filing system, no cartridge to protect the 7TB slab from falling and breaking. Just a goofy awkward robot that will certainly be robust for, what was the number, 10,000 years?
mickdarling··on MGM is down, cybersecurity attack ongoing
Right, they say almost exactly what I said above.

"MGM Resorts recently identified a cybersecurity issue affecting some of the Company’s systems. Promptly after detecting the issue, we quickly began an investigation with assistance from leading external cybersecurity experts,”

"We also notified law enforcement and took prompt action to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems."

The systems are down due to MGM shutting them down, not the active attack shutting things down.

mickdarling··on MGM is down, cybersecurity attack ongoing
Yes, I think that MGM has actively shut everything down, rather than some massive hack that has effected all these separate systems.

Best guess is that with the F1 races coming soon with what is expected to be the largest cashflow through Vegas ever, that MGM Resorts IT found issues in an audit in preparation for that massive event, found anomalies, and pulled the rip cord to shut everything down till they could sort out what systems were actually hit.

That is materially different than a massive hack effecting all these various systems though.

mickdarling··on MGM is down, cybersecurity attack ongoing
I was disturbed to hear from people first hand in Vegas saying it was making the ATMs inoperable. No details on how inoperable, like if it is just certain banking features or everything. The ATMs should not be effected in the same kind of attack that would take down the website and booking systems. Those should all be separate.
mickdarling··on Llama 2
Large Language Models are not Large Knowledge Models.

The only ‘knowledge’ that can be expected of LLMs is that which has been repeated over and over on thousands of online documents. It is AT BEST a side effect of learning the likely forms of words, sentences, poems, code, and other language structures.

Your hippo test is like checking how clean the exhaust of a car is, to determine how much horse power it may have.

My concern is primarily power draw. For a device with only a 2 hour battery, every erg matters.
mickdarling··on First impressions: Yes, Apple Vision Pro works and yes, it’s good
None of the Apple apps they showed for the VisionPro had any substantial photogrammetry mapping. They didn’t paste virtual TVs to the walls, or place furniture into an empty room. All the Apple apps were contained to virtual floating screens, even the keyboard (instead of placing in on a surface).

They did show a few third party apps interacting with real world objects (the train moving on a table) but I wonder what amount of that was concept and what was real.

Connecting the virtual objects to those in the real world I feel is a killer feature that will open up a huge set of opportunities. If this doesn’t have that yet, it’s still more VR than AR in my book.

mickdarling··on Flux Keyboard
I have used a LOT of custom keyboards, looking at an Ergodex DX1 on my shelf now. I wish this is something I could be confident in.

but, them not treating the screen as a display I think significantly limits the utility of this. You have to go through their software to customize the screen, layout, and customizations. Many of us know how hit-and-miss esoteric keyboard software tends to be.

If they stuck to making it an external display managed by the OS, polling the keyboard layout from the OS, and maybe just have their app apply custom functions like emojis and tool graphics I would have some confidence.

They are trying to tie up too much to their software which they will eventually stop supporting, like my DX1 paperweight.

Autodesk has been looking for a Product person to lead their implementation team for USD for the past few weeks. Looks like it is solidly on their biz plan for the next few years.
mickdarling··on Factorio runs on Apple Silicon
I had a repeated crash of Factorio. It was from one of the 30+ mods I had running and it only crashed after 14+ hours of straight gameplay.

I considered the crash a Quality Of Life feature to make me stop playing and get some sleep.

With Factorio even the bugs are features.

mickdarling··on Tinnitus Seems Linked with Sleep
I know this seems like ‘If all else fails ‘hit with lunar boot’, but hit the back of your head pretty hard.

It’s a weird motion so practice with you hand in front of you.

- Hold your right hand in front of you.

- Cross your index finger over your middle finger

- Press your index finger and your middle finger together pretty hard

- Let your index finger slip off the middle finger (You will notice the index finger has quite a bit of power)

- Now place the palms of your hands over their respective ears, covering them completely. Pointing your finger back around your head.

- Repeat the index/middle finger motion above but let the index finger smack the back of your skull (It should sound like a very loud thump)

- Repeat this 40-50 times (Your fingers will likely get tired)

- Remove your hands from your ears and hopefully you will have some relief from the tinnitus (The effectiveness and duration seems to be highly variable from person to person and type of tinnitus)

Good Luck

mickdarling··on Tinnitus Seems Linked with Sleep
Since I haven’t seen this mentioned. It has been remarkable for a temporary solution to let me sleep when my tinnitus is particularly loud.

Basically cover your ears with your palms and snap your index fingers loudly on the back of your skull. 40 or 50 times and when I remove my hands, it is blessed silence for at least a few minutes and often long enough to fall asleep.

mickdarling··on Upper limits on partial Dyson spheres in the Milky Way
I just did a quick look through the doc but it does not appear that they take into account that Dyson shell elements would try to radiate waste heat directionally to the north and south of their orbits as to avoid too much thrust from radiation that may alter their orbital paths or the paths of other Dyson shell elements.

The signal this would create to an outside observer I think would significantly change the heat signature and periodic changes, depending on our observation angle to the star.

mickdarling··on What Made Early Humans Smart
I like the idea proposed by I think Larry Niven the SF author, that speech started as a way to bypass and augment the corpus callosum so the two hemispheres of the brain could get more in sync, and provide a way of organizing, "do this, then do that, then 'be careful here' swing the rock and release."

Think about the internal focus you have when doing something carefully and how you talk yourself through it, from carpentry to skiing.

Using the same verbalizations, when showing someone else the same thing, evolves to language.

mickdarling··on How the stress of fight or flight turns hair white
It is not direct heavy constant stress that causes the damage to the stem cell, but the heightened reaction in Fight or Flight scenarios. This was all in the study. Being under constant stress, which is measured via cortisol did NOT cause the stem cell damage.

I look young for my age, at 44 I look far younger than my silver haired 43 year old brother. People say I am "chill" and "zen" but I bathe in stressful situations as an entrepreneur and independent consultant all day, everyday. I just don't get excited in high stress moments. I'm the guy in center of the storm when everyone is freaking out. It is certainly both part of my nature and learned, as I have worked on improving that over the years.

You can learn to not freak out, and even if it doesn't keep your hair dark and luxurious like mine, you will be better in lots of scenarios.

Which are 4K TVs and likely support the Netflix 4K standard as well.

mickdarling··on The Fermi Paradox
Super-predator Civilizations solve the significant problem of blaming the silence on a psychological quirk rather than statistics.

When you are making assumptions about the millions of civilizations, it is absurd to think they ALL retreated to playing video games for eternity, or ALL nuked themselves to oblivion.

With a single super-predator civ, that has a huge leg up on everyone else, they can have unusual motivations, and techniques. The problem with a super-predator is you likely won't be able to learn anything to prove or disprove them until you meet them, with all that implies.

mickdarling··on The Fermi Paradox
Two Scifi examples that come to mind are a book, GreenFlies (http://www.amazon.com/Greenflies-Andrew-Darling-ebook/dp/B00...) that has a fun example of a super-predator type-3-ish civilization, and the motivations that would create the galaxy we see today. David Brin also has a great book, Existence (http://www.amazon.com/Existence-David-Brin-ebook/dp/B0079XPM... ), that is an example of a super-predator meme that may also be a natural great filter for any intelligent civilizations that pop up.

Full disclosure, my brother is the author of the first book.

mickdarling··on A SWAT team blew a hole in my 2-year-old son
This may sound silly, but it seems like there could be a MythBusters episode specifically on this to prove or disprove how likely these no-knock raids are needed to prevent an effective coverup of evidence.

They could actually make some actionable data for public good.

mickdarling··on The Problem With The Big Bang Theory
I saw a reference recently that summed up why I dislike The Big Gang Theory: "Nerd Black Face." It is treating the nerds and geeks on the show as unself-aware fools for "real" society to laugh at.
mickdarling··on TV Is Dying, And Here Are The Stats That Prove It
The total number of hours watching video is still increasing through. You also have to consider that the cost of production is dropping, and the number of big players in the TV market is still tiny. The huge players are (Disney/ABC, NBCU/Comcast, Time Warner, Fox/Newscorp, CBS/Viacom) and they own an enormous percentage of TV Networks and TV production, both domestically and internationally.

So individual shows rating may be dropping and rating for networks may be going down, but they are spreading their revenues across a lot of the more niche properties. They also make a huge amount from Cable licenses for the whole package of networks to ensure they have as many channels available to viewers as possible.

They are now learning to monetize their properties across digital media, and you will see that growth into online media and consolidation there soon.

I work with major media groups helping them with social media and the growing time-shifted audience, so I've heard a lot of the plans for the future. They see the writing on the wall, and while broadcast and cable might be shrinking, the content creation and advertising around video entertainment will keep growing, of that I am certain.

mickdarling··on Snapchat Spurned $3 Billion Acquisition Offer from Facebook
It is all about vision. What is their vision of the future?

1) Make a cool buck, and chill out in Costa Rica.

2) Make cool companies forever.

3) Make Snapchat HUGE and somehow remake the world with it or something else.

4) Asteroid mining.

If (1) is good enough, and guaranteed, then all options are still on the table.

Only if (4) scale projects are the goal should they sell now. If any other vision is really what they have in mind, they are set.

I personally would aim for (4) or (5) :-)
