I did work on a plugin system for Filestash leveraging wasm. Plugins made with tinygo were 10x slower than the same code in rust or c compiled to wasm

While reading this, I was literally working on patching my open source go app [1] because this is what came out of the stdlib in the last few months: CVE-2025-30204, CVE-2026-33487, CVE-2026-25679, CVE-2026-27137, CVE-2026-32280, CVE-2026-32281, CVE-2026-32283, CVE-2026-33810, CVE-2026-33811, CVE-2026-33814, CVE-2026-39820, CVE-2026-39836, CVE-2026-42499

mickael-kerjean··on I just want simple S3
By itself rsync.net doesn't support S3. The one I wrote (Filestash) lets you use rsync.net as a downstream storage and proxies it through the S3 protocol.
mickael-kerjean··on I just want simple S3
Or maybe the underlying philosophy is different enough to warrant its own implementation. For example, the Filestash implementation (which I made) listed in the article is stateless and acts as a gateway that proxies everything to an underlying storage. We don't own the storage, you do, via any of the available connectors (SFTP, FTP, WebDAV, Azure, SMB, IPFS, Sharepoint, Dropbox, ...). You generate S3 keys bound to a specific backend and path, and everything gets proxied through. That's fundamentally different to not fit in the mold of other alternatives that mostly assume they own your storage and as a result can not be made stateless by design. That approach has pro and cons on each side
mickael-kerjean··on France Launches Government Linux Desktop Plan as Windows Exit Begins
> I wouldn't be surprised if American companies started using it if the French get it right

As a French citizen who own a business [1] that is in direct competition with this incentive from my very own government, I'm happy to disclose more than 50% of my customer base is already in America and France represent about 1%.

mickael-kerjean··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
I am a counter example of that take. As a French citizen, I have spent a decade building an open alternative Dropbox [1] that is I believe miles ahead of even Dropbox itself. In practice, France represents about 1% of the customer base. I've tried reaching out to the people who talk loud about sovereignty. Turns out it's just something they say at conferences to entertain each other as they have no power to actually make it happen.

mickael-kerjean··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
> It's just that many times, each country wants to make their own

This hits hard. I'm a French citizen who made an open source alternative to Dropbox [1], I would have never thought my own government to attempt competing in my niche. I did contact the people at DINUM and it seems they are more interested in making their own than contributing to existing projects they don't fully control

mickael-kerjean··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
As a French citizen who spent almost a decade building an alternative to Dropbox that's libre software [1] I was very disappointed my own country decided to build a product competing with mine when French companies are about 1% of the existing customer base. I would have never thought my own government would be competing on my niche

mickael-kerjean··on France Launches Government Linux Desktop Plan as Windows Exit Begins
As a French citizen who's been building an open source Dropbox alternative for almost a decade [1], the sovereignty talk in France makes me cringe. Everyone has the word in their mouth, but nobody bothers to even search for alternatives, let alone give them a chance. France represents about 1% of my customer base with only a single customer: LVMH. I've had a whole bunch of French universities contacting me, nobody was willing to contribute toward the development because culturally we assume libre software must be free of charge so you'd better either beg for grants or have a rich uncle to sponsor your life. I've tried reaching out to the people who talk loud about sovereignty. Turns out it's just something they say at conferences to entertain each other as they have no power to actually make it happen, and don't even get me started on public markets.

mickael-kerjean··on Moving from WordPress to Jekyll (and static site generators in general)

mickael-kerjean··on Moving from WordPress to Jekyll (and static site generators in general)
> This is hugely empowering and completely obsoletes most CMS systems.

I went the other direction: instead of replacing the CMS, I open sourced a FUSE like layer [1] that mounts any backoffice system as a filesystem while the source of truth is in WordPress, Mysql, Postgres, .... Most backoffice systems map naturally to a file tree, so you mount them locally and let your agent read and write through that.

In the POC I ran, I mapped a whole wordpress site as a fs which was versioned controlled via git so when you did a git checkout of something, the whole db would get updated on the fly

mickael-kerjean··on Ask HN: How do you handle marketing as a solo technical founder?
When bootstrapping something, marketing is about finding distribution channels that work for you. Looks like you never found such distribution channels, learn and keep grinding on that, organic and tik tok dancing is not the only game in town. I do everything from tech to sales, marketing and support for my company based of my oss work: Filestash (https://github.com/mickael-kerjean/filestash). For my business, the most important channel is SEO and particularly creating online tools to get people to interact with the product so if you search for "online ftp client", "online s3 browser" you will inevitably found my product. That's the top of the funnel, the cold traffic and the goal is then to transform that onto paid customers. For me, I make calls with users, try to understand their problem and fix it for them. In practice it's a lot tougher than it looks because with AI less and less people are / will pay for software
mickael-kerjean··on We rewrote JSONata with AI in a day, saved $500k/year
A principal engineer spending his week end vibe coding some slop at a rate of 13k lines of code in 7h to replace a vendor. Is this really the new direction we want to set for our industry? For the first time ever, I have had a CTO vibe conding something to replace my product [1] even though it cost less than a day of his salary. The direction we are heading makes me want to quit, all points to software now being worthless

mickael-kerjean··on What 81,000 people want from AI

Its not, there is history since 2017 and I've been working on this full time

mickael-kerjean··on What 81,000 people want from AI
How do you call a marketing campaign that does not deliver on what it promised? I have no problem with anthropic trying to create good will around their products but this particular campain aiming to find good will around people doing open source was an outright lie that did not deliver what it promised and this was all done on HN.

When a company lies for something that trivial, it does not inspire trust

mickael-kerjean··on What 81,000 people want from AI
Anthropic are masters in marketing to make people think they’re here to do good. A few weeks ago, they got great visibility on HN promising Claude Max 20x accounts to people who are active in open source repositories with at least 5k stars on GitHub [1]. My main project [2] has more than double the minimum requirements, and I’m still waiting.

That's exactly the direction I took with Filestash (https://github.com/mickael-kerjean/filestash) where everything is treated as a filesystem with fine-grained control to handle authorisation, plus a virtual filesystem layer to create completely new filesystems that don't 1 to 1 map to reality.
mickael-kerjean··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026)
Proving the infamous FTP guy from the original Dropbox HN thread right: you can now access your Dropbox over FTPS, SFTP, S3, or MCP. And not just Dropbox, it works with every storage backend out there: https://github.com/mickael-kerjean/filestash

"some basic protection" it wasn't always like this. A few years back you could easily get api keys for any web service by typing certain keywords on github and that included all google APIs, but since the Microsoft acquisition it's not as simple anymore....

That's one of the features of Filestash (Disclaimer: I made it). You connect whatever storage, give it the authorisation you want (eg: ls, cat, mkdir, rm, mv, save), and through the SFTP gateway you can mount in your FS and get full auditability, with the audit trail being tamper proof, traceable, timestamped and non-repudiable

I did a project with Monash university who were using Versity on their storage to handle multi tiers storage on their 12PB cluster, with glacier like capabilities on tape storage with a robot picking up data on their tape backup and a hot storage tier for better access performance, lifecycle rules to move data from hot storage to cold, etc.... The underlying storage was all Versity and they had Filestash working on top, effectively we did some custom plugins so you could recall the data on their own selfhosted glacier while using it through the frontend so their user had a Dropbox like experience. Depending on what you want to do they can be very much complimentary

I'm the author of another option (https://github.com/mickael-kerjean/filestash) which has a S3 gateway that expose itself as a S3 server but is just a proxy that forward your S3 call onto anything else like SFTP, local FS, FTP, NFS, SMB, IPFS, Sharepoint, Azure, git repo, Dropbox, Google Drive, another S3, ... it's entirely stateless and act as a proxy translating S3 call onto whatever you have connected in the other end
