michaelwilson··on Show HN: Gentle is a social app where you give and get kindness
This is very cool. Beyond being kind, it makes me think about what I'm about to say, and how best to say it given I don't know the audience.

Good work!

That's what caused the first "AI Winter": Rules-based "AI" engines became what we call "Business Rules". AI didn't go away - it just stopped being an over-valued set of if-then logic and slots (value-driven triggers) with a cool set of GUI tools to build rule networks.

michaelwilson··on Ask HN: Do you ever contact people who have had a positive impact on you?
Long before it was fashionable, I made the jump from the Corporate world to start-ups, mostly because I decided I'd rather be writing code than being a manager in a corporate IT organization.

Years and a few start-ups after that, I landed in a company was slated to have what looked to be a solid IPO, and I got a block of "Friends and Family" stock - shares which can give to whoever you want to purchase at the opening IPO share price.

I believed I owed much of my success to a few of my managers from my corporate days, who taught me as much common sense and good management as anything. Even though I had't spoken to some of them in over a decade, I tracked them down and passed on the opportunity to purchase the shares.

They were astonished to hear from me after so long, and even more astonished by the opportunity. Since they were still in the corporate world, or retired, the shares turned out to an unexpected windfall which had a real impact on their lives.

To this day I'm most happy about that result.

michaelwilson··on IBM System/360 Principles of Operation (1964) [pdf]
When IBM introduced the AP (attached processor) and MP (multi-processor) systems, they had to add instructions that were guaranteed to be atomic since both processors had uniform access to main memory. Interestingly enough, they only added two instructions (compare and swap, compare double and swap) to support these configurations.

(I think there might have been one or two other supervisor mode-instructions, but there were weirdos like "stop the other processor", for example).

I believe that the sonar they are talking about here is much "quieter" and directional than the type which they is harming sea life. The "harmful" type is either the intense omni directional sonar used to locate other ships, and the extremely loud sounds used by the petroleum industry to map subsurface deposits of oil and gas.

I used to have a view of Central Park, and was amazed how it could literally change almost overnight as if someone exploded a can of paint over the Park.

And it was all the trees, not just some.

It seems like it took one night of good cold to bring it on, but I'm sure that's anecdotal at best.

I wonder if the same technology used to make folder fight jet wings ( so they can store more on an aircraft carrier) could be applied here?

What's amazing is that they get people to pay _more_ than they would - or would even think of paying - for a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu, but their content creation costs are obviously a fraction of what it take to produce even one show on those platforms.

michaelwilson··on mTCP: A high-performance user-level TCP stack for multicore systems
As I recalled, you wrote channel instructions, or chains of channel instructions, as "CCW"s (Channel Command Words), which you dispatched to the channels via a "SIO" or "SIOF" instruction (Start I/O, or Start I/O Fast).

Once the operation started, the SIO(F) returned to you and the channel operated asynchronously from the CPU, moving the data directly in or out of memory. I think SIOF returned as soon as the channel received the instruction, whereas SIO waited for the instruction actually began.

So the channel actually added as sort of co-processor with the same access to memory as other CPUS. I'm pretty sure the channel could use virtual addresses, but the memory of course had to be fixed (pagefixed) during the operation.

In the first release of the Band's firmware, it wasn't consistently good (especially during workouts!), but it's gotten much better with the 2nd and subsequent firmware releases.

Ohhhhh, OK. The problem was, the prefs were ALSO transparent/invisible, so I couldn't see them.

The note finally appeared in front of something with enough contrast that I could nab it and turn it off. Thanks!

It's great so far. But...I, out of curiosity, flipped on the "Ghost Mode" switch. Now, clicking on the ghost doesn't do anything.

What is Ghost Mode? How do I get out of it?
