michaelneale··on Scott Adams: I credit MBA program for my success with Dilbert
Maybe, for the first few years, but really, when you think about it - isn't Dilbert just a loser? He never improves his lot, he either has no desire to, or no ability to. If no desire to, he is a loser. If no ability to, he is under the mistaken impression he is far smarter and more capable then he is, which means he is also a deluded loser.

(and yes, I know its a cartoon !).

But it does bug me a bit - instead of people feeling sorry for themselves (as the cartoon seems to help people who are coping with grey corporate existence) why not encourage people to change their environment (either bit by bit, or just improving yourself, starting something, finding something, anything).

Dilbert is a loser, feel sorry for him but don't relate to him or else become him.

michaelneale··on Myth: Entrepreneurship Will Make You Rich
You wouldn't be working in a corporate environment generally for very long (often founders move on) and in any case, it isn't like you are a "regular" employee if you are really successful ;)

A lot of things are easy to bear when you know they are temporary - and you don't have the locked in feeling.

michaelneale··on JOP: A Tiny Java Processor Core for FPGA
heh - the reverse would be true now ;)
michaelneale··on JOP: A Tiny Java Processor Core for FPGA
Cranky??
michaelneale··on Ask HN: What The Hell Does Sharepoint Do?
It seems like there is growing interest in integrating products with it (non MS products) - might be a market growing for add ons, who knows. I only hear screams of pain.
michaelneale··on App Engine can finally receive mail. [bonus: delete your app as well]
I guess if you had some clients to that app still out there (say, installed apps) somewhere, server gets deleted, but clients then try to connect to it - in the meantime someone has snapped up the name/URL and is collecting data from unsuspecting clients.

At least that is what popped into my mind.

michaelneale··on What non-geeks hear when you speak techie
Its also rarely seen as insulting these days.
michaelneale··on What non-geeks hear when you speak techie
Yes but really really bad post title. Is nothing to do with techie talk, that was the first thing that bugged me.

I think the use of the term "geek" is reasonable: I am seeing that term apply more and more to anyone with a deep/obsessive interest in a subject.

michaelneale··on Why startups shouldn’t have to pay to pitch angel investors
How is paying to go to a conference where you can network (or present, if you are lucky) with the whos-who of tech, versus for the opportunity to pitch to 1 single angel group/firm ? Not even remotely connected - absurd to even think so.

On top of that the amounts of money seem to differ by at least an order of magnitude.

michaelneale··on Why startups shouldn’t have to pay to pitch angel investors
Salesman or marketer? A lot of technical folk confuse the two. I think he can close deals, for sure, but really he is a talented marketer.

A lot of really good sales people don't make it obvious they are selling, Jason seems to make it a bit obvious in an un-ashamed way (which make me think he is more interested in getting the word out then pushing things on people).

His enthusiasm is infectious though, its really cool assuming he is sincere (and I am pretty sure he is).

michaelneale··on Why startups shouldn’t have to pay to pitch angel investors
I doubt it - he seems to have an abundance of energy and Mahalo is probably run well day-to-day by the people he has around him.
michaelneale··on Red Hat Asks Supreme Court to Review Software Patents
I think DEC did have a patent on link lists in the 80s ;) - but still, your point remains. It wasn't the inventor that did it either (just someone having a laugh).
michaelneale··on One Small Leap for Open Source, One Giant Leap for Mankind
That is most definitely like a typical software patent.
michaelneale··on Quantum Entanglement Visible to the Naked Eye
shakes fist at universe
michaelneale··on Quantum Entanglement Visible to the Naked Eye
If you were to use this entanglement to transport information (by periodically changing the flow, from that case) - would the change of the entangled thing be instantaneous or limited to speed/distance between them by C? (excuse my naivete).
michaelneale··on JWZ: that "duct tape" silliness
I still can't see that in it (I guess I know who jwz is, and know who joel is, and what he has said about jwz in the past and that colours it for me, but I am POSITIVE that was not the intent).
michaelneale··on JWZ: that "duct tape" silliness
I am pretty sure that isn't really an example of "damning with faint praise" - it is clear to anyone that the use of the "duct tape" phrase was dramatic, considering he then goes to describe jwz as being one of those people that just gets out of bed looking good etc... (NOT faint praise !)

That would be "yeah, jwz did an OK job on netscape" etc..

michaelneale··on Red dust over Sydney
Yeah the weather can be a bit wild here at times - but its not really that bad. Not hurricane (or cyclone) bad (living up north for a while is worse).
michaelneale··on Why Google AppEngine sucks
So what we are left with is link baiting in english? no thanks... it doesn't need a title like that.
michaelneale··on Scala vs. Clojure: Concurrency
Yes I like the look of the clojure one, but actors are just one of many (flawed) libraries in Scala, I am sure a similar solution could work there.
michaelneale··on [dead]
Freelancing is still trading time for money. Just a diverse set of sources of that money, but its still not scalable.
michaelneale··on How the Web OS has begun to reshape IT and business
Not that I don't disagree with your analysis - but I am not sure what you mean by "religious looking beams" ?
michaelneale··on Write Haskell as fast as C: exploiting strictness, laziness and recursion
I am happy to see UNSW powering on in the FP world. Waaay back when I went there, they tried, valiantly, to teach us grubby Engineer hacker types the virtues of purity (via miranda), of I tried to ignore it and wanted to get to the good stuff that let me flip bits on a serial port. But now I am grateful for someone at least trying to "show me the way" so early on (and over time, I think it paid off).
michaelneale··on Why I'm Moving From Desktop Apps to Web Apps
I think for a lot of people now, Chat and Video player are moving to the web, soon after image editing.

I think it will be a while for Video editing, software development etc... but the direction is clear.

And of course, some things have to exist on the device but can be embedded in the web app.

michaelneale··on Lactic Acid Is Not Muscles' Foe, It's Fuel
I mostly do interval training (when not just doing weights) - I wonder if it is a bad thing - but I just find it so fun and non-boring...
michaelneale··on The Failure of the GPL
Well I thought the point about it being a distribution of software licence (not a usage licence) meaning companies like google can use it without sharing changes was interesting (but I am sure that point has been covered in lots of other places).
michaelneale··on The Failure of the GPL
but had the GPL not existed when it did - would the foundations still have existed that make open source of any licence as mainstream and commercially acceptable (in some cases preferable) as they are today?
michaelneale··on Webkit + Macruby = Manipulating the DOM right from Ruby
I used to noodle with Ruby GTK+ bindings - ruby was a nice language to lay out screens, write controllers and utilities etc... so it would also be nice alternative for DOM work (and perhaps building up composable widgets). Interesting...

I think the startup Appcelerator has a product called "Titanium" which kind of does this as a desktop/ria client platform (but not just ruby).

michaelneale··on David Foster Wallace on Life and Work (unabridged)
I had never heard of David Foster Wallace before this. Thanks for sharing it, has really made my day.
michaelneale··on So long, and thanks for all the fish
And thanks for taking the time to answer the questions here !
