michaelgiba··on Open Source Goes to Mars
I’m concerned why chardet is on that list haha
michaelgiba··on Vitalik escalates ETH 2.0 merge as miners plan a 51% attack
Blockchain is totally trustless. All you have to do is trust the source code maintainers, inventor, anonymous miners and hackers reading your smart contract code all at once. After that it’s 100% trustless.
michaelgiba··on Local rules instead of global censorship
The fact a centralized system profits from engagement isn’t inherent to the fact it’s centralized, decentralized platforms are likely to do the same. As for your second point that their mistakes happen at scale, that is true. But also the things they do right happen at scale as well. All of the automated moderating and disinformation detection that has been in the works happens at scale too. It would be much harder to do similar in a decentralized system because of the partitioning of user data.
michaelgiba··on Ask HN: Why are people publishing FAQs/articles on Medium instead of Gist?
+1, same founder tho
michaelgiba··on Local rules instead of global censorship
I also don’t agree with this and might even argue the opposite. Nevertheless, I think in general de/centralization is orthogonal to censoring inflammatory actors. That always comes back to who are the moderators and what are their stances on censorship.
michaelgiba··on Show HN: Nothingly – The gift of nothing
Wow, I hadn't heard of this. That was great
michaelgiba··on Zoom improvements requested by music schools
I gotta say, the Yale School of Music website is pretty cool on its own
michaelgiba··on Addressing the threat from investments that finance CCP military (2020)
Maybe I’m missing it, but why is this trending now? The EO was in November
michaelgiba··on Monorepo Is a Bad Idea
I respectfully disagree with this. Assuming you have the right build system and tooling setup a monorepo is strictly better than the alternatives solely from the code reuse and cross-stack visibility gains you get.
michaelgiba··on Eliminating Task Processing Outages by Replacing RabbitMQ with Apache Kafka
I’m just surprised a single RabbitMQ node powered all of door dash for as long as it did
michaelgiba··on Wuhan coronavirus: From silent streets to packed pools
Why is this downvoted? This has been happening a lot recently on seemingly normal messages.
michaelgiba··on Wuhan coronavirus: From silent streets to packed pools
> If there was a government cover-up and people were still getting sick then we wouldn't see people putting themselves at risk to go to a music festival.

A tad misleading, if people cannot communicate publicly about people getting sick or hear this from media, why wouldn't they go to a music festival? They wouldn't know. Interested to hear your thoughts

michaelgiba··on Wuhan coronavirus: From silent streets to packed pools
I'm honestly pretty disappointed in the BBC for covering this like it is fact and not calling into question the data integrity issues China is infamous for. Nevertheless, I do think China, at least before re-opening, had less community spread than most other countries due to the severity of their lock-down. Authoritarian countries are able to impose measures like this much more quickly than democracies, for better or for worse.
michaelgiba··on Wuhan coronavirus: From silent streets to packed pools
Thankfully you don't need to go through the president to get this information. Troves of independent, even international, journalists have written stories on COVID responses within US states, including TX and FL. It is wholly misleading to compare the claims of these two countries.
michaelgiba··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
I’m confused too, this seemed like a normal comment
michaelgiba··on Ask HN: How to make bootstrap look more professional
I’ve always thought Redhat’s pattern fly does the best job of this corporate look. https://www.patternfly.org/v4/
michaelgiba··on Kodiak Robotics Journey – Self-Driving Trucks
My company made some of our progress in the self-driving space public - thought I would share in case anyone finds it interesting. (We are hiring)

michaelgiba··on Show HN: Ameelio.org – Free Prison Communication Platform
I read this headline as "Making Prison Communication-Free" and thought it was some sort of cruel experiment
michaelgiba··on Oracle copied Amazon’s API – was that copyright infringement?
Amazon did the same thing to MongoDB by replicating their API and as far as I know there hasn’t been any successful litigation on Mongos behalf
michaelgiba··on Top UCLA Doctor Denounces HBO's “Chernobyl” as Wrong and “Dangerous”
Not to mention everyone in the show has a British accent, even Gorbachev. Hilarious
michaelgiba··on LeBron James school that was considered an experiment is showing promise
Great point
michaelgiba··on Bill Gates comes to Washington – selling the promise of nuclear energy
Gates 2020
michaelgiba··on China hacked HPE, IBM and then attacked clients
I would even go as far as saying this would be mandating expertise. The zero days these state actors use often fly under the radar for a while. I don’t think you can really blame the companies
michaelgiba··on Proposed new tag: IMG (1993)
this is amazing
michaelgiba··on China May Have $5.8T in Hidden Debt with ‘Titanic’ Risks
Wow.. thanks for putting this in perspective
michaelgiba··on Unroll.me to close to EU users saying it can’t comply with GDPR
Judging from the other comments I guess I’m in the vast minority, but I think the fine structure is really bad for small businesses. I’m not a GDPR fan.
michaelgiba··on I Tried San Francisco's Electric Scooter Share and It Was a Nightmare
I use it daily and it’s actually pretty nice. Personally the they don’t bother me when they are “littered” on the sidewalk either
michaelgiba··on An Italian Region Where Co-Ops Produce a Third of GDP (2016)
I see, thanks!
michaelgiba··on An Italian Region Where Co-Ops Produce a Third of GDP (2016)
“About two out of every three inhabitants are co-op members, together producing around 30 percent of the region’s GDP.” - does this mean the 1/3 that isn’t a part of the co-op accounts for 70% of the GDP? Could someone clarify?
