micampe··on Programming fonts
Unless it’s using the same rendering engine for the images that your OS uses it’s pointless anyway, as demonstrated by the fact that there is a “renderer” option on the page itself.

This is only meaningful as a comparison between those two renderers on an unspecified version of Windows.

micampe··on The adblocking revolution is months away
Do you have more information? I can't find anything, and articles like this don't mention any specific issues https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/ios-network-caching-ht...

> Things like the HTTP Protocol are fundamentally broken by Apple, and this is not ok.

What do you mean?

micampe··on Using the System Font in Web Content
The browser’s UI, of course.
micampe··on Using the System Font in Web Content
OS X and Windows have different “default” fonts too. Obviously in this case people mean the font used in the UI.
micampe··on The Poor Reviews of Apple Watch Now Probably Means It Will Be a Major Success
The Apple Watch is not any less resilient than other steel sport watches, the problem is that people that are not used to wearing a watch believe they should be scratch proof (ever seen Spigen make a case for a Speedmaster?), which none of the ones you listed are, even at 250x the price, like the Nautilus (which was never a "sport watch" in the sense that you are using here, by the way). Go diving with a Submariner and it will get scratches and dents and no one will be surprised.

> And if you don't impress the hackers, your days are numbered.

I don't know if the Watch will be successful in the long run, and I don't want to post the slashdot quote for the millionth time, but that's exactly what people said about the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

On the other hand, hackers were extremely excited about Maemo and Openmoko.

micampe··on Google+ Photos Is Shutting Down
I did that for a while to hide the random “notifications” from people I had never heard about that appeared every other day on google.com. I had to change the custom style so many times because they changed the ids/classes every other week that now I just logged out of my Google account to not see it.

Oh. Woosh.

If you want to make snide jokes you should at least be informed.

Ok. I didn't know about cdc.

You want $CDPATH for that in Bash.

> Someone at the labels probably went to Taylor Swift about this and told her what was happening

I think you are painting her as more naive than she is. She’s been critical of streaming services in the past, I’m sure she (and her entourage/business partners) were following Apple’s announcement closely without the labels telling them anything.

micampe··on Protocol Oriented Programming (in Swift) – WWDC
I was in the room and this was my favorite session so far. I encourage people to watch it even if you don’t strictly care about Swift, the concept exposed is interesting and useful, and the syntax introduced shouldn’t be a problem to understand.

micampe··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
Yeah, I know, that’s my point. The distinction is the reason companies don’t like to use confusing terms: “free” has only one meaning for them in the context of software.
micampe··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
When most companies say free they mean free of charge, if they want to say open source they say open source, because that’s the term the world understands. Basically only the FSF uses free to mean Free Software.
micampe··on Introducing Hello
If you have iOS you can use Spotlight for that: search a business name and get the same place info you get in Maps, it’s pretty convenient (I think it’s new in iOS 8).
micampe··on The photographers who refuse to abandon traditional film cameras
Why worry now? We'll deal with that when we get there.

Excellent reading. I smiled at this “Unlike the dSLR, this camera isn’t a black box”.
micampe··on New Hacker News Guideline: Avoid Gratuitous Negativity
Yup. Not just comments, always trying to find the alleged negative aspects of everything and clinging only onto that, without so much as acknowledging other possibilities.

This is the reason I stopped reading HN as much, just as I stopped reading comments everywhere else on the internet. I don't want to tiptoe through arguments trying to preventively push aside all possible misinterpretations or people trying to put words in my mouth.

This is not critical thinking, this is just cynic criticism.

micampe··on Vim is moving to GitHub
I disagree: the intent of the GPL is to preserve freedom; the way the GPL preserves freedom is by preventing you from removing it by changing the terms.

If I'm choosing a license for a project, it's important that I know that changes other people make will be available to me under the same terms as my own code.

A license that requires you to make the changes available but allows you to restrict my use of those changes is plainly in contrast with the intent of the GPL.

micampe··on Vim is moving to GitHub
“[…] to make the source available under the same terms.”

You are omitting what is probably the most important part of the GPL.

Oh please, stop it with the fanatics. The first version of your comment is not only incorrect but also not the type and tone of contribution appreciated on HN, and you have been here long enough to know it.
