micah_chatt··on Why I like Golang's interfaces
The thing that tripped me up was you can't pass lists of interfaces across function boundaries. It's confusing when you're starting out
micah_chatt··on Building a Bank with Go [video]
I had to click around to find the video, but here it is: https://www.infoq.com/presentations/bank-go
micah_chatt··on TN Could Give Fastest Internet for Free, Will Give Comcast and AT&T $45M Instead
For reference, with EPB 100M is $60/mo, 1G is $70/mo, and 10G is $300/mo. EPB is hugely popular here in Chattanooga, not just because of the internet speeds, but for stellar customer service. Install of fiber internet: free. Don't want internet for a month: no contract, no penalty. Have a problem and need to talk to someone: Call in 24/7 and talk to a human right away.
micah_chatt··on Sexism in Tech: Beyond the Outrage
Going along with this thought, I think providing educational tools for people seems to be one of the things that could help empower those who would be targets of sexism. It seems simple but just educating people on what harassment is and how to react is way better over nothing. Prior to my current job, I'd only worked in companies that had less than 50 people, and not located in CA, so once I went through harassment training I was surprised to learn how much of the frat-boy behavior I'd experienced in small startups was sometimes straight up illegal.
micah_chatt··on Mid-stack inlining in the Go compiler
What impact would that have on build times? I know a lot of work has gone into getting back to 1.4 build times, but would the added work of inlining prolong builds?
micah_chatt··on Google Spreadsheets and Python
Isn't that what Firebase is for?

micah_chatt··on Going Diamond: on Amway
No way! I grew up literally across the river and could see Amway from my bedroom window.

micah_chatt··on The Apache Cassandra battle highlights major problem with open source projects
I'm curious what impact this will have on other ASF projects, specifically Mesos. A number of the features required for a smaller or medium sized organization to actually use Mesos in production are only available in Mesosphere's DC/OS. And whenever those shortcomings are brought up, the answer is "oh well if you really need authentication beyond htpasswd, you can pay for DCOS." Like the article hinted at, I hope the ASF tries to do more to work with vendors to help OSS side of projects flourish rather than just be lip service.

micah_chatt··on Zika Infection May Affect Adult Brain Cells
Guillain-Barré (normally 1 in 100,000, it's 1 out of 5k-10k with Zika ) is quite scary as well, basically you get locked inside your own body and either die or have a multi-year recovery if they identify it within the first day or two. I know two people who have gotten it in the last year: http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/local/story/2016/apr/04/n...
micah_chatt··on Terraform 0.7 released
Success! The issue was just merged[0], hopefully this will make its way into TF soon.

micah_chatt··on Terraform 0.7 released
Terraform seems like a great project, and the new import feature could nearly convince me to switch. My biggest barrier to using it is the lack of cross-account role support with AWS[0].

micah_chatt··on Atlassian Acquires StatusPage
Congrats Scott & the StatusPage team! I interviewed for a position with StatusPage at one point (ended up going with a different company), but I have huge respect for the product and the team.
micah_chatt··on ReStructuredText vs. Markdown for documentation
Back to the main point, for non-developers all of those can be quite confusing especially when you're used to Word/Google docs/etc. A text-only editor where you don't get live feedback is quite an adjustment and there is a cognitive switch to the text you're writing and imagining how that text will be presented.
micah_chatt··on ReStructuredText vs. Markdown for documentation
I totally agree.

I actually recently introduced RST and Sphinx to our documentation team of 4 non-developers, and the most difficult hurdle was actually teaching them to use git (even with GUI SourceTree). Getting multiple non-developers (2 are remote) how to install Xcode and Docker produced more confusion then I thought it would. We've finally gotten into a flow, and better documented how to install the documentation tools, and it's been working quite well.

micah_chatt··on Lesser-Known Python Data Analysis Libraries
I'd also add to this list Pandashells https://github.com/robdmc/pandashells - Basically use Pandas in the command line.

micah_chatt··on Show HN: Ssh2ec2 – Connect to EC2 instances via tags/metadata instead of hostname
Done!
micah_chatt··on Show HN: Ssh2ec2 – Connect to EC2 instances via tags/metadata instead of hostname
This reminds me of an Instagram tool I used to use, ec2-ssh

https://github.com/facebookarchive/ec2-ssh

My biggest headache with most tools (like the article) is that they don't easily support cross-account roles. This leaves me using a combination of the awscli and jq.

micah_chatt··on Visual Studio Code is now open source
Thats right!

Yea, it seems that MSFT realizes the direction the industry is going and is catering to that.

micah_chatt··on Visual Studio Code is now open source
This would be awesome! The one other thing I'd love to see is the docker + python support.
micah_chatt··on Visual Studio Code is now open source
I've used that occasionally, but have found myself falling back to vi. I'm interested to try the Go plugin and see how useful it is
micah_chatt··on Visual Studio Code is now open source
One of my top requests to their team is to support rebasing (for squashing and avoiding merge commits)
micah_chatt··on Visual Studio Code is now open source
I actually visited the VS Code team at Microsoft a few weeks ago for a product-research day where they brought in developers from small teams from around the US. I had heard that this was the plan, and I'm excited to see that it has since happened. They showed some compelling features (still not-yet released) that I think would bring this well-beyond a simple Atom competitor. Once they bring the debugging and linting features to other languages (Python, Ruby, Go), I think this won't just be seen in the same category as Atom.
