micah94··on Why was the F-117 retired so quickly?
I memory about this is rusty, but there was A LOT going on with this stealth tech. I vaguely remember color being important, too. The earlier (and stealthier!) designs had a camouflage look rather than black. But this looked "ugly". So they changed it. I think advancements in materials made this moot.
micah94··on Why was the F-117 retired so quickly?
Saw these fly over my high school back when I lived in Ohio (close to Wright Pat AFB)
micah94··on People on TikTok are paying elderly women to sit in stagnant mud for hours, cry
When the French did this to Africans (taking them from their homes and throwing them into zoos), they weren't getting paid anything -- perhaps this is a step up in a dark morid kind of way. And the voyeurs had to travel to the zoos to see them. Now you just have to swipe or click. Our tech makes depravity easier. (<your search engine>: 'human zoos')
micah94··on Fastmail 30 June outage post-mortem
...bolted on top of DNS.
micah94··on Average age of a car in the US is more than 13 years
They've been talking about replacing these things "soon" for decades...
micah94··on Mach-9 12-passenger jet will fly from New York to Tokyo in one hour
It's ridiculous what they had to do to even approach Mach 3. I read the SR-71 would leak fuel during take off and flight. It was intentionally loosely held together. When it went supersonic the metal would basically melt shut. Would like to know how the Stargazer folks have addressed this. Have they built it out of one solid piece of metal like a UFO?
micah94··on Prehistoric timeline in Africa pushed back by more than 10M years
you should throw this 'README' up on github
micah94··on The first game ‘Easter eggs’ were an act of corporate rebellion
I was going to comment on the same thing then got lost in all the Easter Egg references...

Yes, this was my interpretation as well (or close to it)! There was no way a 15yr old was looking for Backup Software for his Atari (did this even exist?? I was a 10yr old in 1980 and the thought of backup software never crossed my mind).

This kid wanted Atari to release more peripherals and games and such to "back it up". That is, to SUPPORT and SUSTAIN the growth of the gaming system.

micah94··on The FBI Has Been Buying Bulk Internet Data from This Florida Company
> although Motherboard notes that the data in question is what is known as “netflow” data, which, in some cases, can allegedly be used to help track cybercriminal activity.

How does one purchase netflow data from an ISP? I could see requiring it in a criminal case, but just calling up an ISP and asking? Is that really a thing?

micah94··on America’s banks are missing hundreds of billions of dollars
Yeah, I had like $4k left in a brokerage account. Then one month I noticed ~$100+ dropped in there and I was like WTF? That's 10x what I see in my savings account for the same amount of money just sitting there! So my money market is now my savings account. The risk is that you could lose your principal...but I guess not anymore!?! Thanks SVB, FRC, et al.
micah94··on Show HN: I Scraped Hacker News for TLD Popularity
"Island of Shame" by David Vine really gets into the details of this if you really want to know the history. Spoiler: The United States fully controls this territory because of the (very active and strategically important) military base. The UK ownership is just a cover... (an entire book could be written just about this alone)

Also, the people brought there were slaves. No one lived on the islands originally. This is why the various governments felt they could move these people where ever they wanted. The people became self-sufficient, of course. Then were forceably moved to Mauritius and other places, given a stipend, but no land or access to any resources when the US military expanded their base. Basically dumped the people into ghettos.

This is still a very open wound in 2023.

micah94··on Ask HN: How to prevent a company from taking my domain name?
A customer of mine had their website hijacked by Godaddy (copied their website text and pointed to a Godaddy IP). The application stopped working of course because that was hosted elsewhere (with me). They did this because they didn't like what was being sold on the website.
micah94··on Poll: Do you use anti-virus software on desktop Linux?
Has it caught anything?
micah94··on Why didn't you buy a Tesla?
Are you going to summarize all the answers?

I think they are just too expensive (seems to be #1 reason or #2). The idea of a $1000 monthly payment is abhorrent to me. For the price so many other cool cars come into the picture.

I like German cars. I drive a late-model Audi A4 that I bought outright for under $20k. I'll probably hop around from there to BMW and Mercedes. Drive all the cool cars I couldn't afford when I was younger.

Even though I work in tech and can appreciate what Tesla is trying to do -- hell, I love that they put the name TESLA back into the public consciousness -- I'm not a fan of the cars.

I think the roadster is cool, but that could only be a plaything. And again, waay too expensive when you consider what else you could get in that price-range. Anyone buying those probably already has a fleet of SUVs and a carbon footprint the size of Godzilla.

micah94··on Ungox – Mark Karpeles new venture
He was convicted in Japan because everybody gets convicted in Japan, especially a foreigner. But he saw no jail time.
micah94··on A friendly introduction to the Friendship Paradox (2021)
Whenever you start talking about averages, you have to be careful. The average nuclear family having 2.5 kids, for example.
micah94··on Amazon Alexa is on pace to lose $10B this year
A customer of mine has a product based on DragonNaturallySpeaking that medical doctors use for dictation. They are doing a brisk business. It's all software. No fancy hardware. For this use case, it's almost flawless. And way faster than typing. The only commands you give are related to the recording -- stop/start/playback-type commands. Not sure how sophisticated it gets beyond that. But the speech-to-text technology is pretty damn good now.
micah94··on The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
I'm for this. Get rid of timezones, AM, PM, DST, leap years, seconds, all of it! Imagine having to know just one time. It takes a bit to wrap your head around. But only because we've accepted all the confusion for so long. The sun is still going to be "up" in one part of the world and "down" in another. The little numbers on your clock don't change that. Why can't it be the same little numbers everywhere?
micah94··on Robinhood cuts losses after transaction revenue drops
Yeah, I'll believe the "tightening" when I see it. Balance sheet still astronomically high. Banks are not being forced to hold dollars. Current Govt Admin spending like drunken sailors. The only difference is we have higher interest rates which is straining regular people. It's a race to see if inflation actually comes down or economy goes to shit. Or both together all at once?
micah94··on Robinhood cuts losses after transaction revenue drops
Oil priced in dollars. Countries forced to buy/hold dollars. Country tries to use another currency to buy their oil, they end up like Saddam or Gaddafi c/o the US military.
micah94··on Meta Earning Results Q3 2022 [pdf]
I second this. The ipad has become the computer for several in my family as well.
micah94··on CIA doctor hit by Havana syndrome
A CIA doctor talking to a TV doctor on CNN. I'm not buying it.
micah94··on Tell HN: Network Solutions Is a Scam
Unless you're buying domains in bulk, a .com is going to be ~$11/yr even for a reseller. So Cloudflare is assuming you'll buy some additional service down the line. Domain registration is a loss leader. You should be aware of this. I agree $60/yr is high. I'm sure NetSol tacked on all kinds of BS "features" to justify that. But the bottomline is you can't make money selling domains alone.
micah94··on Bitcoin drops below $20k, Ether cracks $1k – what this means
Coinbase is publicly traded, Michael Sayler's company, GBTC, the futures market. If you watch CNBC there are a ton of crypto commercials.
micah94··on Justice Clarence Thomas uncovered a seven-year-old bug in my program (2013)
I will admit wondering whether Justice Thomas was actually looking at Perl code was part of the reason why I clicked on this.
micah94··on Using email wrong
Anyone have a suggestion for those sites that don't allow + or % in the email address? This is always the hangup for me when I try to organize like this.
micah94··on Poll: Do you speak foreign languages?
Trying to learn Mandarin. Took French in school but can only read. Would be embarrassing to speak. I chose "No".

Doubtful, I think Webb only sees in the infrared. Looking at the earth would blind it. This is why it'll be a million miles away protected by a fancy heat shield.
