Don't let anyone tell you can't do it, where there is a will there is way. I do have to say that if you don't find someone if you are serious about this you should build a prototype yourself. I think even if doesn't become the actual site , the experience you will learn will be invaluable. Also if I was a person who you were recruiting it would impress me that you cared that much to learn. Plus you ability to communicate with a technical co-founder will be that much better. I also think don't underestimate the power of prototype to get you funding.
Quite frankly I have a distaste for advertising in general. Google has taken that dislike and made advertising as unobtrusive as possible, if I feel clicking a link then great. Whatever happened to paying for something you like, these business models seem to always resonate with me. I think the article is spot on, let google play with advertising move on from the ad game, its over, maybe .... maybe facebook has chance to provide advertisers with something different in terms of ads and thats HUGE maybe
If you haven't lived in NYC why is the assumption that only sleazy MBA types work there. I am tired of people bashing the startup culture here in NYC, I believe there is a healthy community of startups in NYC anything from etsy, kaltura, tumblr, buglabs, amiestreet, delicious(started in NYC), hakia, viewdle, teachthepeople, clickable, wixi, commandshift3, and more...The concentration might not be like Boston or SF, but I think people forget there are 10 million people in NYC and 2 major universities ( NYU and Columbia) which make for a large number of developers.
I think the fact that I have to pay 650 bucks for a new version of photoshop makes this an attractive option for potentially lots of people. Great job guys !
I am an American citizen. Thanks for the info, its really confusing and there seems to be a lot of conflicting arguments on this matter. I am looking for outside investment not specifically VC, but probably eventually.
While you can't argue that there hasn't been a meaningful web application to come out of Japan, the article is still pretty upsetting. The stupidity of the federal government in this country is incredible. As an American I am pretty pissed off that we are this far behind. It is a pretty upsetting paradox , how the us is home to amazing innovators despite the stupidity of the federal government. The state of US infrastructure is disgusting from mass transit to the internet, its pretty depressing.
We have recently received some funding and want to bring some programmers on board for the Summer. If you are interested please email marvin.hidalgo@gmail.com by June 20. Include a list of your technical skills, any open source projects contributed to, and cool projects worked on.
We are small team in New York City. We are in need of another programmer/technical co-founder(s). We have small seed money and can pay/house this person for the summer. If all works out we want to make this person a permanent member of the team.
I think he seems very bitter in his post. Also I think he wrong when he says why would it matter that its wordpress. He makes an analogy between oracle and mysql as well. I think it does , technical proficiency matters, if he is going to outsource his programming I see this not being successful.
The signals the beginning of the end for desktop applications. We already knew it was coming eventually. Of course, for some apps more powerful desktops will be necessary, but for the majority of people internet access will provide them with all they need. I see google buying one of these startups , brand it a google internet machine sell it for dirt cheap.
I have been teaching myself how to hack. I see that the first real software engineering classes in most schools is taught in JAVA, usually a data structures class. Should I even bother.... I see the merit of learning ground level stuff , like memory management seen in C/C++ but with JAVA is it useful to learn even if majority of web development is done in LAMP ( I should say majority of web development interesting to me, I know there is alot of JAVA out there) Does anyone know of a good book/tutorial to learn data structures with languages such php/ruby/python.
Cool man...I think your approach is right, traffic is irrelevant right now, just get it up, get feedback, and keep on improving it. Looking forward to see what you come up with.
You definitely should include some geo-location, google maps.... Would be cool to type in your zip code and see nearby events and integrate the voting feature you have already made. Keep up the good work.
This wasn't very helpful. I still haven't found a good source that explains financial projections for web startups. While personally I think its bullshit, you build the product and see what happens. Investors/VCs want to see it sometimes and you don't want to look incompetent.
