mherkender··on Sony debuts first PS5 controller for disabled gamers
ALPS makes the hardware for the joysticks the major console companies use. They are cheap and work great -- except they have a really really short half-life. Even the Xbox Pro Controller (which is like $200) uses them which is crazy.

I'm guessing it makes financial sense to keep using them so nothing changes.

Hall effect joysticks are becoming more popular but they're usually harder to get ahold of and may not actually be that much better in the long run. Time will tell!

mherkender··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
I made a Doom "renderer" (no game but you could run around Doom maps) as a side project one summer. This was 20 years ago and in Flash so it was a novelty.

Later I applied for an internship on a whim. I assumed I wouldn't get it since I didn't have the best qualifications. But the job required Flash experience and the Doom renderer made it very clear I had that much. I got my foot in the door, made a career out of it, changing the course of my life.

mherkender··on Love after life: Richard Feynman's letter to his departed wife (2017)
I dunno, a lot of those 80s rock stars slept with their underage groupies. Harvey Weinstein used his power to pressure young Hollywood actresses, am I supposed to believe that a professor sleeping with his students is a completely different beast?

I still think Harvey Weinstein is worse, like you say, but I think it's disingenuous to pretend like they're completely different types of people.

mherkender··on Analogue 3D
3D is one area where the FPGA model of emulation doesn't seem so good. The N64 is pretty low-resolution and low-FPS compared to modern devices, which is grating in 3D even though it has a nostalgic charm in 2D.

Maybe it's enough to be able to buy a "new" N64 for some, but I'm skeptical it will be able to overcome the N64's flaws.

mherkender··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
Shut-in would be more accurate, NEET is basically unemployed. There's overlap sure but someone on a job hunt is a bit different than someone who doesn't leave their home.
mherkender··on Amateurs obsess over tools, pros over mastery
Why not both? I've been using vim for ages and I'm very "masterful" with it, but at the same time I try to look for tools to solve unsolved problems I deal with.

It's true that novelty doesn't generally deliver actual results but it's also my job to automate everything that can be automated.

mherkender··on Noctis, the 'No Man's Sky' Forerunner Whose Creator Retreated from the World
It is very much a game influenced by depression, I recall you played a solo alien with a destroyed planet and no knowledge if any of his kind was left or where they would be.

It was a really magical game from the pre-iPhone era of the web, so experimental it barely made sense. It's sad to hear of the creator's struggles, I hope he focuses on himself instead of worrying about letting anyone down.

mherkender··on Pixar was never a masterpiece factory
I respect what the author is getting at -- Pixar movies sometimes favor adult expectations instead of being kids movies and get stuck somewhere between. I can agree to an extent, I felt Soul was really guilty of this.

But the author is a victim of the same mistake. If kids like the movie it's a kids movie. I think Soul is barely for kids at all but if kids like it, it's a kids movie. Letting an adult decide what a kids movie truly is is just ignoring kids in a different way.

They also seem to think producing a handful of some of the most influential movies of all time makes Pixar not a masterpiece factory, as if their weak efforts somehow make their better efforts less valuable. And finally I won't hear Coco disrespected like that, Inside Out is overrated sure, but Coco is the same caliber of film as Ratatouille.

Don’t forget the calls for Total War and Trial by Combat from his son and lawyer.
mherkender··on Wikipedia frequently-encountered sources, color-coded by perceived reliability
It’s myopic to assume that other countries have identical values and that their news souces wouldn’t be influenced by those values.
mherkender··on YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation
I really hate this hand-wringing over supposed censorship.

The Internet has had to deal with trolls and cheaters from day one. If someone sends a packet that indicates they got a headshot in a multiplayer FPS, they could be cheating so we invented anti-cheat. If someone spams an email account claiming to be a Nigerian price, it doesn’t mean that’s true so we invented spam detection. If someone makes a blog post claiming product X changed their life, it could be an ad so we have ad detectors.

Year after year, people find new ways to manipulate online communities. The people who run them have an obligation to prevent them from becoming toxic.

Now we have powerful actors manipulating political discourse and suddenly the rules are different? It’s complicated but that’s what happens when you serve billion(s) of users.

mherkender··on Why Facebook Keeps Beating Every Rival: It’s the Network
I don't think anything you're saying is untrue, but I do think you're ignoring how shady and unethical Facebook is when they feel like it.

For example, they downgrade YouTube videos in people's feeds. There's no reason for that if they have a better product.

mherkender··on How the CIA Forgot the Art of Spying
Le Pen is France flirting with authoritarianism.
mherkender··on Citigroup fined $7m after legit transactions mistaken for test data for 15 years

mherkender··on VLC contributor living in Aleppo writing about the Paris attacks
Blaming culture is easy, because it lets you ignore history. Islam was once the height of civilization, but it fell apart because the Mongol empire was within range.
mherkender··on A Disadvantaged Start Hurts Boys More Than Girls
Calling me dumb is out of line. You're making a lot of assumptions that could also be explained by saying that risk-taking is the logical choice for men, for those exact same reasons. We didn't evolve big brains so our genes could decide everything.

Civilization is very recent in human history, and without civilization you can't have Genghis Kahn so I don't see how he is relevant.

I feel like people used to say God made people a certain way. Now that I basically only interact with nerds, they just replace God with evolution. I'd prefer some citations, since all I hear are the same assumptions.

mherkender··on Who’s to Blame for Mass Incarceration?
It is easy to put the blame on "black culture" then to look at the very complex socioeconoic factors that lead things to where we are today. You're the one oversimplifying.
mherkender··on A Disadvantaged Start Hurts Boys More Than Girls
Maybe it's just cultural. I don't see why risk taking favors men millions of years ago.
mherkender··on JScreenFix – Repair stuck pixels
Maybe.

If the pixels are being interpolated they'll be less likely to be completely white or completely black. I'm not sure how much that matters, but if you're going to leave this site on for a while it seems like you might as well go to the effort of turning off pixel scaling.

mherkender··on Pao vs. Kleiner Defense Rests Its Case, Showcasing a Different Side of the Story
I guess I just don't understand why any of that couldn't be chalked up to conflicted feelings. Couldn't all the things you're saying be true, and yet Kliener Perkins be guilty of discrimination? Why does her imperfect behavior matter if she's not on trial?
mherkender··on Shipping Culture Is Hurting Us
Having consistent behavior for NaN means that I can write "<math operation> ? x : y" and know that "y" will be the result when "<math operation>" involves NaN. It's useful.

Not saying it's the perfect way to handle things, but it's pretty reasonable in world where people write code that generates NaN almost every time they use division. I worry more about writing code that generates NaNs than NaNs themselves anyway.

mherkender··on Microsoft adopts first international cloud privacy standard
Open-sourcing helps though. Also, relying on ISO for the standard (which has been sketchy in the past when it comes to Microsoft, see also OOXML) was probably not a good idea. Microsoft doesn't have a great reputation for security either.

It's true, ultimately cloud security relies on trust, but I don't think Microsoft has done enough to deserve my trust, even if this is a good step forward.

mherkender··on Microsoft adopts first international cloud privacy standard
Not really, the only secret the trusted root has is their private key, not an entire stack of software/hardware/etc.
mherkender··on Richest 1% to own more than rest of world, Oxfam says
I can't speak for everyone, but for me it was more about the growing divide between the rich and poor. I don't think a healthy/happy society with room for upward mobility can exist if things keep moving in this direction. This is literally how wars start.

I really can't understand how you think this is about some person's individual success. People don't hate that, they want it for themselves too. The problem is that statistically it's becoming less likely for poorer economic groups, regardless of their honesty.

mherkender··on Windows 10 will come with a command-line package manager
This reminds me of that time that Microsoft caught up to a competitor years too late to have any impact.
mherkender··on A History of Misses for RadioShack
It's not my only bad experience with Radio Shack, but they ripped my Mom off by not accepting a valid coupon for a cellphone. They stalled for a while, then told her to buy it anyway and redeem the coupon the next day. My Mom is the type to do that, but the next day they refused to redeem it. I stopped shopping there.

They may have been the offline Newegg once, but I won't be surprised when they file for bankruptcy in a decade or so.

mherkender··on BBC begins kids coding push with Bitesize and TV shows
I agree. It's bound to fail for one thing -- nobody's gonna get blackballed in the programming industry for being too open about programming fundamentals.

Worse yet, controlling information to secure your position is a special kind of evil. Do you respect lawyers who make the world more litigative and themselves more valuable? Do you respect doctors/police officers/etc that protect others in their profession at the expense of the people they hurt? That's the world one builds when they hide that kind of information, one where professions aren't equally accountable.

mherkender··on US man finds lost mother in an isolated Amazon tribe
I give up, you're a troll. You're not really saying anything at all.
mherkender··on US man finds lost mother in an isolated Amazon tribe
You not understanding me is not ironic. He's not a member of a primitive tribe, he's an anthropologist.

If I visit a country and they tell me I should hate homosexuals, knowing what I know about homosexuality means that doing it would make me an awful human being. Even if I respect their different opinions on the matter, it doesn't mean that they are being good, because we know that homosexuality isn't a choice more than they know it is a choice.

Vultures eating dead flesh is not inherently wrong, it's just distasteful to some. This very obvious example of child sexual abuse that actually harms someone who is alive is not even close, and it's weird that you're making that comparison. Do I really need to cite the negative effects of sexual abuse on children to justify my position here?

mherkender··on US man finds lost mother in an isolated Amazon tribe
You don't know what rape is. The modern interpretation of rape isn't just when people force themselves on others, it also includes things like coercion, and abuse of power.

I'm not sure I can think of a more obvious example of taking advantage than a almost middle-aged affluent man who marries a child from a group of people almost completely isolated from the outside world while he's supposed to be studying them.

Why is it in every thread online involving statutory rape is there some guy trying to shift the definitions or morality of it around? What are you trying to accomplish?
