mguerville··on Ask HN: Is there a HN type forum for engineering managers?
Rands Leadership slack group
mguerville··on Ask HN: What software has gotten better?
photo editing software keeps getting better, Photoshop, capture one, etc.
mguerville··on Ask HN: How to learn sales?
Yes the whole procurement process is designed to recenter the equation on the economic benefit. That’s why you need a champion on the side of the company you’re selling to, who will help you overcome the hurdle because they are really invested in your product
mguerville··on Ask HN: How to learn sales?
It’s hard to shift your mindset to emotions but by and large that’s what sells, not features. So as others have said it’s all about listening and then finding the pain they have at an emotional level and seeing of your product can solve it. A productivity tool doesn’t sell on ROI calculated by hours saved, but on “freedom” and “self actualisation by doing more meaningful work and less tedious work”
mguerville··on Show HN: Marker – open source hand-drawn illustrations
Nevermind I think I found it: https://freeillustrations.xyz/?ref=producthunt
mguerville··on Show HN: Marker – open source hand-drawn illustrations
Can't find it but it's one of the many, many, many links on this page: https://www.producthunt.com/search?q=illustrations%20
mguerville··on Show HN: Marker – open source hand-drawn illustrations
A few similarly sparse sites for illustrations have done well on product hunt and now it’s more common. Someone recently created an aggregator because a bigger library is definitely needed

mguerville··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
Quite a few large french companies that are global in nature have switched to English first, but for the broader acceptance and the government to officially support English as the unifying language I share your skepticism
mguerville··on The Long-Term Stock Exchange Opens for Business
I assume companies will still need to be "priced" and then supply/demand will affect prices, do you intend to have any unique mechanisms to reduce volatility and short termism by investors or is the idea to be hands off and control the long term focus in "softer" ways?
mguerville··on First tax year with Stripe Atlas
When I did startup M&A (for a larger corp) we found out the hard way that many profitable startups would not be if they actually paid the right taxes. They didn’t know and were too small (sub $10m in revenue) for the tax authorities to care but we walked away from deals because the cost of bringing them to compliance would kill the deal returns and we were too big to get away with it
mguerville··on Lori Loughlin and husband sentenced in college bribery scandal
I’m an adjunct at a top 30 b school (not US but top 30 global), and I tried to fail a student and the administration made it pretty clear that wasn’t going to happen. I don’t even think he had undergraduate freshman level of business acumen, let alone MBA level.
mguerville··on Scribd acquires SlideShare from LinkedIn
I dislike them too but in case you’re really asking, the point is discoverability (content marketing for long tail topic), and analytics/lead capture + vanity metrics (number of views and downloads being a visible metric to any viewer). I’m puzzled it’s worth that much though.
mguerville··on U.S. Marshals Service online auction – Fyre festival fraud scheme
If your dad is open to it, these three happen to be among the ones i have never been able to find anything (mp3.com especially) so I’d be interested

They would fit nicely : http://mattmg83.github.io/cynicalcapitalist/portfolio.html

mguerville··on U.S. Marshals Service online auction – Fyre festival fraud scheme
So I happen to know a bit of that world. I’m a collector of memorabilia of failed capitalist endeavors. The point others have made is very true about merch being hard to authenticate when you could just recreate on any custom T shirt / hat / mug site. But for some companies, Enron, Pets.com, and a couple others, merch still commands a high price (not Fyre level though). Personally I prefer to seek more rare and “inside baseball” artefacts but in some cases merch is the best I can do (or an autographed book).
mguerville··on Ask HN: How can I “work-out” critical thinking skills as I age?
I stumbled onto brilliant.org recently and while it’s a bit narrow (Math skills), it seems better suited to cognitive training than most other attempts I’ve seen
mguerville··on Help HN: Laid off due to Covid, almost out of runway
In my line of work (non engineering, strategy and other business side leadership roles) there’s also the problem of a very tiny pool of jobs to begin with, so I decided to be very proactive and I have started reaching out to companies that raised money recently or who have “we’re hiring” on executives LinkedIn profiles and cold emailing them something to the tune of “I have helped many companies with various hard to define problems and taken a variety of roles that may not fit the traditional job titles paradigm, I like your company and you’re growing your team at the moment, could I get a chance for a quick chat to see if you have problems or opportunities I could help solve?”

One week in, I’ve already had a handful of informational interviews, while my applications to actual postings go into a black hole.

I bet that approach could work for your profile as well, I’ve even deployed a sales enablement tool and a CRM to automate, track and document (for unemployment claims) my process

Good luck

mguerville··on Learnings from a Year of Being Indie
You can adjust the sensitivity of the writing scanner so it looks more organic if you want, and you can draw directly in the app although that doesn’t allow for sensitivity or pressure based influence on thickness of the lines of the things you draw
mguerville··on Learnings from a Year of Being Indie
Not OP but the Carbo app does this, you take a picture of a drawing and it converts to faux chalkboard or blueprints
mguerville··on Ask HN: Alternative to Google play music once they close?
Honestly I’m just back to storing my own music and gave up on streaming services. To discover new music though i use mostly Hype Machine, Deezer and Youtube music, just get the actual mp3 for the stuff I like so I am not at the mercy of changing licenses etc.
mguerville··on Ask HN: Do you use an Ad/Content blockers?
I use wipr on safari and nextdns at the OS level, uBlock Origin on other browsers. When i have to turn one off to unbreak a site and then proceed to the rest of the web I’m seriously appalled.
mguerville··on Ash HN: Is it worth investing in paid email services hey/superhuman?
You can’t import old emails
mguerville··on Ask HN: What’s the coolest thing you have built
I made a card game (www.intrapreneurs-game.com) to teach innovation to the corporate crowd (I teach MBA classes part time and do speaking engagements here and there). Building the mechanics of the rules and the game content was fun and I tried to balance actual gaming entertainment with actual learning and even built a companion app with supporting material for every concept in the game.
mguerville··on Ask HN: What are we doing wrong now that will be painfully obvious in 100 years?
We’re starting to see some big cracks in the armor of democracy (polarization and entropy) and capitalism (inequality) so perhaps iterations or complete substitution of these pillars of modern life should be expected sooner than later
mguerville··on Ask HN: What password manager do you use?
Switched from 1Password to Bitwarden as the business model became feature throttling and while it’s not quite as slick (and integrated as well with iOS) I don’t regret it one bit. Both of them are weak for bulk editing your database though
mguerville··on Show HN: Python package to collect normalized news from almost any website
I have been a paying subscriber to Ground News for that reason, the app shows me bias very transparently. Glad to hear there are others doing this
mguerville··on Ask HN: How come there is no example code for B2B-SaaS apps?
Sorry I just saw this (usually just lurk HN so not up to speed with my comment responses), yep interested to help if you'd like
mguerville··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Glide, which makes PWA rather than native apps (though I tried Adalo too and taht could make native apps) and Voiceflow for the voice app
mguerville··on Ask HN: How are you reducing your dependency of Google related 'stuff'?
Ditched Google Fi (back on a regular carrier + iOS) and Chrome (firefox), duckduckgo for search.

Still using gmail, drive, and youtube (often on private mode) and hoping that nextDnS + uBlock also shields me from having too complete a profile in Mountain View
