mguerville··on JaaS: The team that builds Jitsi can now also run it for you
I’ve had similar issues and have not found a tool that cooperated better. Here are a few things that helped though: - App police (mac app) to reduce cpu allocation for any given app - unplug external display monitor during video calls - turn off any video enhancing settings in app (mirror video, enhanced light, etc) as well as virtual background or background blur

It’s crazy that I’m 2021 we don’t have video calling that isn’t a ginormous performance hog

mguerville··on No-code platform Webflow (YC) raises $140M at a $2.1B valuation
Thanks for the link, I was able to deploy my first full fledged nocode app at last!
mguerville··on No-code platform Webflow (YC) raises $140M at a $2.1B valuation
I am happyu to see this crowd calling webflow for what it is, a WYSIWYG editor, I'm a non technical but tech savvy person and I've built simple sites (some with basic "app" like functionalities) in the past using Squarespace, Wix, Wordpress, and my current favorite: Tilda. Only in the past 18 months has everyone starting to call Webflow "no-code" and I felt like I must have been missing something.

Thunkable, Adalo, Bubble, those are no-code tools Webflow, Carrd (which I like but is also touted as no-code platform when it's basically a landing page builder) and in different categories Notion or Airtable... they're great tools but it feels misleading to call these "no code platforms"

mguerville··on I stole the data in millions of people’s Google accounts
Exact same issue here, i love the idea of it but until there is a universal OAuth I will stop using it. I’ve also not deleted Facebook despite mostly wanting to because I know it’s my OAuth for many services and some make it very hard to change.
mguerville··on Ask HN: Any cool Wikipedia API projects out there?
Sure thing here is Netflix https://cln.sh/JeBMco as seen if someone is logged in
mguerville··on Ask HN: Any cool Wikipedia API projects out there?
It’s not much but for Valutico.com the company description when hovering over a public company name (during the peer selection step of a valuation) is delivered via the Wikipedia API
mguerville··on Need help: Pricing strategy for a developer tool with 400000 users
Tomasz Tunguz of Redpoint Ventures writes a lot on pricing and has published a few studies based on data he’s collected. I would recommend you check them out for inspiration
mguerville··on Ask HN: Is there a HN but for management/leadership?
I would add that it’s also a very well moderated and helpful community, like HN, not the typical open slack group dynamic of spam and memes
mguerville··on Ask HN: Has anyone hired a freelance developer for a MVP?
Kind of, i built a lot myself but since I’m not a developer I needed to outsource building an actual application (I had ported a sort of MVP to a platform but the limitations were too great). I hired through upwork and it’s approaching completion, a few weeks behind but with relatively few tradeoffs and I understand, in hindsight, why it became more complex than me and the developer had anticipated. He showed me some code and a few behind the scenes stuff so I think it’s likely going OK and I’ve erred on the side of good faith by releasing milestones payments but I guess within 10 days or so will be the final verdict.

The project is a multiplayer card-based games with complex rules and custom assets.(intrapreneurs-game.com)

mguerville··on Four-day week means 'I don't waste holidays on chores'
I have been working mostly from home over the past 5 years and with enough flexibility that I've usually done chores during the weekdays (working earlier, later, or more on some other days to make up when that's necessary to perform at the same level) and I realized during my brief stint back into an office routine this year that this was a huge luxury and something I value enormously. In addition, my family is in Europe (I'm in the US) and being able to call them during the workday spontaneously instead of making it a planned thing to do over the weekend has been a huge perk as well. I think the 4-day workweek sounds great for people who can't have the same day to day flexibility but would like the convenience the article mentions
mguerville··on The NAP system for business idea generation
Thanks, will do (FYI this is where I'll use it: https://uwm.edu/business/event/intrapreneurship/)

I'd say either a one off ($5 for an idea, some amount of time like 30 or 90 days max) pricing, or if you do subscription then consider an annual (that way you don't pay the $0.30 credit card processing fee every month, just the 2.7%) but very cheap plan like $20/year, or maybe even a lifetime option (I don't know, $80?)

I just think that the monthly subscription is not necessarily aligned with the lumpy usage pattern most users will have and therefore you risk a lot of churn when people haven't had a new idea in 3 months and wonder why they're still paying every month

mguerville··on Ask HN: Easy low cost landing pages for multiple domains?
I just went through the same search and decided to go with Carrd, they make it very economical overall and very easy to use custom domains, nice templates, etc. you can even add widgets for payment, mailchimp or other simple click to action stuff to make your landing pages more useful. Happy to send you a referral code but honestly it's cheap enough as is.
mguerville··on The NAP system for business idea generation
I like the system, with your permission I'd love to use it in innovation workshops I run occasionally

I like your site too, I'll probably subscribe to test a few ideas, the subscription model feels a bit weird though, I don't plan on having ideas every month or to run a survey on a particular ideas for months on end. Just my two cents.

mguerville··on Ask HN: What is the best book you read in 2020?
I did like Range (and am biased because I'm a generalist myself so I "wanted" to like it) but found it a bit belabored after the first few chapters, like most non-fiction books.

My pick would be Intrapreneurs by Gib Bullock, a first person perspective of building a new venture in a large business while challenging whether large businesses are good for the world, and ending up in a mental ward from the stressful introspection https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39730555-the-intrapreneu...

mguerville··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
We use famileo too, it's great. Our idea with that side hustle was total automation so people don't have to even choose the pictures, and perhaps that's where the product market fit was lacking. The hypothesis was that 1. most people think they'll choose pics but in reality they rarely do and rarely print any, and 2. in the "choose and print" market there was too much competition to begin with, from printing for pennies at walgreens or online via shutterfly, to recurring services like famileo

Here's the video I made, for what it's worth: https://youtu.be/93XUnsrG18g

mguerville··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
Chroma Club (the coloring book one) was just $3k, I had about 2 weeks to unload it because I didn’t want to have to handle closing and refunding subscriptions (some people prepaid for 6 months etc.) and it was faster/easier to sell than unwind, so a bit of a fire sale. The other one was about 10x that amount.
mguerville··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
Awesome. Love the idea, I've built a card game to teach innovation (www.intrapreneurs-game.com) so I appreciate the effort that goes into designing a game, I'm currently trying to get my game developed as an app because I'm doing some remote workshops in 2021 and want to use it, thanks for sharing
mguerville··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
Wow, I clicked because of your comment and I concur, you're not being dramatic, it's pretty overwhelming animation
mguerville··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
I have, I built a subscription coloring book business when they became a huge fad. It was profitable (between $500 and $1,000 a month in net profit) and I sold it after 10 months when I needed to relocate outside of the country for work so the burden of managing it would no longer be worth it. I also joined somebody else's side hustle in the employee engagement space (tips for managers and a simple tool to keep track of staff info like birthdays, favorite food, etc.) that was acquired by a larger but still very small company in that space. Both "exits" were not in the low 5 digits so nothing notable but a nice feeling
mguerville··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
I and a few classmates in business school built a service to print people's top 5 instagram pics (top = #comments + #likes) every month and mail it to them as a nice physical keepsake. I was really flabbergasted that we couldn't get even 10 customers, we spend nearly $1,000 on ads before calling it quits (if we had had 10 customers we may have kept iterating but the setback was big enough to decide to just stop, and it only took a few weeks to build). Part of what was happening at the same time was the move towards stories, videos, and posts with multiples images, so it would have become way more complex than initially planned anyway and none of us were engineers. The year before that I "invented" a mouthwash that was all powder based so you could travel with it despite travel liquid restrictions, the kickstarter campaign raised a decent amount but about a 1/3 shy of what it would have cost to place the minimum order with the packaging company (the power would be in tea bags), so I also nixed that but that was a fun side project
mguerville··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2020?
The Song Exploder episode about Mobb Deep was great because it explored the genesis of a legendary hip hop act and very touching for the story of their friendship through fame and eventually the death of Prodigy. And as with all these episodes the background into the song (Shook Ones pt II) is also very interesting
mguerville··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2020?
I loved that episode too, I was extremely informative but also equally saddening.
mguerville··on We need legal controls on web advertising
Thanks yeah it's a fair point, but at my skill level I have to make trade-offs and in this case I hope that the increased attack attractiveness of NextDNS relative to just my one endpoint with pi-hole is still a better solution than me poorly managing that one pi-hole config
mguerville··on We need legal controls on web advertising
I set up NextDNS instead of a pi-hole, because frankly pi-hole seemed a bit daunting as a non technical user (if not setup, proper maintenance) and it's been great, between that and uBlock Origin I feel well shielded, and when I use my wife's iPad with neither of these I'm appalled at what the internet has become ad-wise
mguerville··on Ask HN: What do you want your camera to understand?
Given camera sensors can view things we can’t (UV and IR spectrums come to mind), maybe stuff like is this person having a fever, how good is my sunscreen application on my face, how hot is this thing, etc.

Also distances could be computed from camera + gps or accelerometer?

mguerville··on Ask HN: How long have you been on HN and have you learned a lot
Probably about 5 years between this account and a prior one. I lurk a lot and frankly can’t comprehend 90% of the posts since I’m not an engineer, but I learn a lot and wish I could contribute more. It’s my favorite community online.
mguerville··on How to Run a Ponzi Scheme for Tech People
It’s not that easy, even in SV and within my batch at 500 startups (arguably one of the better credentials a startup can have at an early stage) the struggle to raise was real. And then back in the Midwest a lot of startups I’ve advised have had a hell of a time raising.

If you aren’t well connected or hyper credentialed (or if you’re a minority founder), raising capital is very hard. It’s easier than it’s ever been, but it’s not « easy »

mguerville··on Sleep duration is associated with brain structure and cognitive performance
Same, I sometimes start getting a headache in the late afternoon only to realize I’ve only had coffee a my one liquid intake for the day. It’s not as bad when working from home because I have more reminders to drink, including when in the kitchen to make lunch.
mguerville··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
Good luck and feel free to reach out for an impromptu chat
mguerville··on Quibi Is Shutting Down
That's me exactly, I paid for the download feature when I use to fly a lot, now I pay because otherwise the ads to content ratio is so bad I don't even try to keep up with creators I like
