mgraupner··on Germany explores 4-day workweek amid labor shortage
Ok, that's a field I'm not familiar with. I guess this is more of a government field of work and they are more conservative in their hiring process. I found the following jobs and the amount is pretty limited (and in Eastern Germany/Saxonia): https://www.xing.com/jobs/hydrowissenschaften?keywords=Hydro... or https://www.melioplan.de/stellenangebote

Edit: https://www.stepstone.de/jobs/wasserbau-ingenieur Here are far more jobs, so there seem to be at least some available.

Did she contact some professors at her university here in Germany? They often can provide contacts to industry or the government.

Other than that good look at finding a job for her, she should not give up!

mgraupner··on Germany explores 4-day workweek amid labor shortage
Amazing. Would you mind disclosing where in Germany you are and what here degree is in?
mgraupner··on Germany explores 4-day workweek amid labor shortage
As a German, my personal experience does not correspond with this. I know a lot of companies here where people from India or Eastern European countries work and their knowledge of the German language varies widely. But as long as you speak English you get along very well here. And they work at large companies, mid sized companies or startups. Most people in Tech/Engineering speak English nowadays.
mgraupner··on Germany explores 4-day workweek amid labor shortage
So she's got a degree in engineering from here in Germany, knows the language pretty well, but can't land a job here? I don't know where you are in Germany, but that sounds pretty much unbelievable. I live in Bavaria in a mid-sized town with 140.000 residents. I know companies here where almost half the staff is Indian/other nationality and it does not matter at all how good your German is (I know multiple Indians working there). I personally have a friend who is from Iran, she is going to be a chemistry professor soon here in Germany, so there ARE definitely opportunities for people who are not born here.
mgraupner··on An influx of Chinese cars is terrifying the West
Over Christmas I rented an EV here in Germany, wanted to try the Renault Megane E-Tech. Instead I got an Ora Funky Cat, so Chinese car. Electrical driving was quite nice (as most EV), but there were so many other annoying things:

- First and most important for an EV: It needed a lot of energy, 25 kWh per 100 km at 120 km/h on the highway at 10 degree Celsius. Combined with a pretty small battery it was annoying how fast you lost range.

- It warns you (via voice) as soon as you hit 120 km/h, every time you go below and reach it again.

- If you activate the Automatic Distance Control it will warn you (again with voice), every time you activate it.

- It was cold in the car, even with temperature set to 26 degree Celsius. But the heating was working when the car was not moving but in ready mode.

- Slow charging speeds, 70kW max.

- If you unpack your car and leave the door open, it will warn you with voice output, that the key is not in the car. All the time, without any pause, a hundred times. Highly annoying.

- A lot more annoying things the car tells you to do, all with its voice.

So all in all a pretty horrible experience, if other Chinese cars are similar, they will not make a dent here in Germany, even with their lower price point.

mgraupner··on Quad9’s Opinion of the Recent Court Ruling in Leipzig
Welcome to Germanys Landgerichte (State Courts). Sony probably knew, that this judge would rule in their favour (former rulings, of old age, ...). Now the defendant has to appeal the ruling, which costs a lot of money and time.
mgraupner··on Quad9’s Opinion of the Recent Court Ruling in Leipzig
Because Sony sued at this court (you can't just start at the High Court). If they decide to appeal, it moves higher up the hierarchy.
mgraupner··on Implement DNS in a Weekend
Setting the pi-hole as your DNS server in your router would not work? TV should then use this DNS server after getting an IP-address via DHCP.
mgraupner··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
I like their solution, much better than just touch and still easy to clean. Very fast to go from 0 to max and back. No problem in activating them, you're 'probably holding it wrong'. ;)

I don't know how one can loose/have to find them, mine is always on the stove, I only take if off while cleaning and put it back on afterwards, which is a thing of milliseconds, thanks to the magnetic attachment.

mgraupner··on On the unexpected joys of Denglisch, Berlinglish and global Englisch
May I ask if you're a native German or English speaker?

There is an example in another thread here which has the following example: We spontaneously decided to get married. I would translate that into: Wir haben uns spontan (dazu) entschieden zu heiraten.

What is the difference in these two? Same words, same meaning to me as a native German speaker. As I see it, spontaneously can have a subtle other meaning than spontan, but can also be the same.

mgraupner··on On the unexpected joys of Denglisch, Berlinglish and global Englisch
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/de/worterbuch/englisch/spon...

"spontaneously" translates to "spontan".

mgraupner··on On the unexpected joys of Denglisch, Berlinglish and global Englisch
Definition of lingua franca: "bridge language, common language, trade language, auxiliary language, vehicular language"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingua_franca

And it does not mean French, but Frankisch tongue. And by the definition this phrase means "language systematically used to make communication possible between groups of people who do not share a native language" - which is English nowadays, at least in the Western Hemisphere.

mgraupner··on I made my blog solar-powered, then things escalated
I also think that this setup will not be worth it ecologically or economically.
mgraupner··on I made my blog solar-powered, then things escalated
It does not really matter, they are basically all the same. Only thing to watch out is that they should be build with half-cell technology and monocrystalline (which almost all of them are, technology does not differ that much in solar panels). 400 W Panels are pretty much standard.
mgraupner··on Night of the living brain fog dead or how I hacked myself better via open source
1. Check your Vitamin D levels, if deficient use liquid drops to supplement. Lot of people suffer from this in winter, especially in the northern hemisphere.

2. Do you suffer from a stiff neck? If 1 does not help to release muscle tension, check for Intracranial hypertension or Intracranial pressure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intracranial_pressure).

mgraupner··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
The point was that the combined value of all these features are rarely matched in any other laptop in this price range. Superior speakers were just one of the things.
mgraupner··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Why would you compare the price of an ordinary laptop with that of an extraordinary one? People buy Mercedes and not Lada Niva for a reason my friend, even though both of them can drive. ;)
mgraupner··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
For 3600€ you could get the M2 Pro 16" with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD which is a much faster machine than the on you bought 4 years ago, even if the specs might not have changed that much.

Could not argue about the price of a Ryzen, can't beat that. :)

mgraupner··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
It would be ok if the upgrades would not be so freakishly expensive. RAM is on an all-time low, still Apple wants 460€ !!! for 16 GB RAM more here in Europe.
mgraupner··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Which starts at lower prices. But you're right, I forgot about this model because I do not consider it a Pro model anymore.

Apple: 500 nits display, whole working day battery, fans almost never on, much higher resale value. Might be worth it for some people.

> And to top it off I just got a 256GB M2 Macbook air for travelling which has horribly crippled IO perf compared to the other models, which I didn't realise until after I bought it.

Do you really feel the crippled IO perf? I mean this machine still has read rates between ~800 and 1700 MB/s. Thats not exactly the definition of slow.

mgraupner··on A short history of the VW Mark 1 Rabbit/Golf (2021)
I drive the current BMW 3 series with a 150 PS Diesel engine and in summer I manage to get between 47 and 51 mpg at about 130 km/h (about 80 mph) on the highway. And I'm not even trying too hard to save gas. VWs current Diesel engines have the same mileage.
