mgiampapa··on Hackers manage to unlock Tesla software-locked features
I did the same on a Mazda CX5 a few years back, but it was a software only hack to get root first. I suspect the actual physical hardware modification line is the one that most users are going to be unwilling to cross unless they are in the "Download a Car" crowd.
mgiampapa··on Hackers manage to unlock Tesla software-locked features
Just like we used to have cable box guys willing to sell you an unlocked box for premium channels, we are eventually going to have feature unlock guys that you go do and for a small fee perform some slightly more technical hack to enable features that are already there.

mgiampapa··on Pines – Alpine and Tailwind UI Library
ncurses! foiled again!
mgiampapa··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids, without the knowledge of the individual, certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.
mgiampapa··on Live Starlink Satellite and Coverage Map
Works great in the current firefox.
mgiampapa··on GM’s decision to ditch Apple CarPlay, Android Auto sparks backlash
EVs are turning the service business on their head. It looks like the only real service on the Bolt is tire rotations and a cabin air filter change for example.
mgiampapa··on SpaceX moves Starship to launch site, and liftoff could be just days away
On a large enough time scale the survival rate for everyone is zero.
mgiampapa··on Microsoft's Software Is Malware
Or it would just be a Windows monopoly ecosystem. Without that loophole perhaps no open source unix-alike product would have been able to out compete Microsoft in the server space which is what lead to it's viability as core of a phone OS.
mgiampapa··on Lemmy
https://join-lemmy.org/ would be an infinitely more useful starting point to discuss what lemmy is.
mgiampapa··on Silurian Hypothesis
If you have the capability to run such a simulation, why not start from time=0 and just let it run... if you already have near infinite compute ability what does it matter? If you are an observer outside the universe so to speak does time even happen?
mgiampapa··on Google and Mozilla are working on iOS browsers that aren't based on WebKit
It you go the extra mile and actually disable Chrome on Android, even Google apps will start making calls to Firefox as the browser. It makes for a much better experience, otherwise Google apps don't honor the default browser choice in many circumstances.
mgiampapa··on Tell HN: Airbnb has no system in place when a host cancels on a renter
I've used Airbnb probably 15-20 times for stays between overnights and weeks over the last 5 years.

I've never had a bad experience. Not one... I've had some odd experiences like a host who really wanted to make us breakfast and chat, but none of these horror stories.

It's been a great platform for me, saved me thousands of dollars when traveling and I have met some exceptional people due to interactions with it.

mgiampapa··on Installing an Ethernet card and video card and other upgrades for a Mac SE/30
While impressive, it would have been a lot easier to just use a SCSI connected Ethernet adapter. Correct SCSI termination would have required sacrificing a chicken and drawing a pentagram in blood, but still easier than this project.
mgiampapa··on Run Stable Diffusion natively on your Mac
I've played with https://stable-diffusion-ui.github.io/ a bit and it's been a good stepping stone to learning more about SD.

https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui is also popular but requires a lot more config to get going.

mgiampapa··on Turn the radio volume down for adverts and DJs talking
Just delay the stream by a few seconds and process before you play it. You could simply do this by inserting some filler audio in the front, or slightly shifting frequency lower until enough of a buffer was built.
mgiampapa··on Fuel out of thin air: CO2 capture from air and conversion to methanol (2020)
Still burning money, but looking for things where green premiums can be paid like for woke Zero Net Carbon aircraft.
mgiampapa··on Mauna Loa eruption underway; lava no longer contained to summit
FIRMS data is frightening, https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/usfs/map/#d:today;@-155... but I don't think it's that realistic based on the video I have seen from other folks on the island.
mgiampapa··on Mauna Loa eruption underway; lava no longer contained to summit
There are AQI sensors all over the island, but maunakea is 4000m tall and the eruption isn't really near anything other than the national guard base. Generally speaking the air on the Big Island is very very clean by most standards. In the typical trade wind pattern (which we are not experiencing at the moment) you will mostly see volcanic gas from kilauea get trapped on the south kona coast.
mgiampapa··on VMware Fusion 13 – native support for Apple Silicon Macs
UTM's lack of any accelerated graphics makes a non-starter for most desktop applications these days. It's fine as a frontend to QEMU, but that's all it is. Fusion and Parallels will continue to dominate this space on MacOS.
mgiampapa··on From Plex to Jellyfin Media Server
Plex has a rather good Desktop app with real HD codec support in both a desktop and HTPC interface flavors. https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-app
mgiampapa··on The Lie That Facebook Sold You
Having a goal of using the product we make more isn't inherently evil, so why would anyone write about it that way.
mgiampapa··on Starlink to start “deprioritizing” traffic after 1TB monthly
With faster and better interconnected birds. Improved density, larger coverage areas away from ground stations, higher margin services like RV, boats, cruise ships, planes etc.
mgiampapa··on Emergency SOS via satellite is included for free with iPhone 14 Pro for 2 years
No one is as anti-consumer as apple. It's a walled garden without the ability to side-load apps and byzantine restrictions like no 3rd party web rendering (aka, Firefox).

The solution is not buying their products or services, and buying the most open and least bad thing that meets your needs. When consumers prioritize openness, right to repair, and actual privacy the market will eventually follow in that direction. Apple feels they can play the privacy angle, but it's just privacy to keep you in the garden and away from 3rd party ad tech and to completely capture the revenue stream.

mgiampapa··on Cisco Confirms Data Breach, Hacked Files Leaked
Cisco has confirmed a breach of its network, where the attacker used voice phishing to convince an employee to accept a malicious multifactor authentication (MFA) push. The breach resulted in cyberattackers gaining access to the company's virtual private network (VPN) and the theft of an unspecified number of files from its network, the company stated on Aug. 10.

The attacker compromised a Cisco employee's personal Google account, which gave them access to the worker's business credentials through the synchronized password store in Google Chrome. To bypass the MFA protecting access to Cisco's corporate VPN, the attacker attempted voice phishing, or vishing, and repeatedly pushed MFA authentication requests to the employee's phone. Eventually, the worker either inadvertently, or through alert fatigue, accepted the push request, giving the attacker access to Cisco's network.

mgiampapa··on Use one big server
This isn't really a backup, it's redundancy which is good thing but not the same as a backup solution. You can't get out of a drop table production type event this way.
mgiampapa··on Stores weigh paying you not to bring back unwanted items
You can also buy books by the linear foot. Apparently when WFH got going big time it caused a huge spike in demand as people wanted filled bookshelves as a backdrop for video calls.

mgiampapa··on Why houses in Bermuda have white stepped roofs (2016)
We do water catchment in a lot of rural Hawaii too, but I've never seen a gutter system that couldn't keep up with tropical storm rains and needed steps to slow it down. We get 200+ inches of rain per year in Hilo so it comes down in buckets quite frequently.
mgiampapa··on Hertzbleed Attack
On most shared infrastructure would be even harder to exploit. In an ideal world you are sharing the infrastructure to maximize CPU and other resource utilization. When running workloads on VMWare for example, the best practice is to disable deep C states and not allow the CPU to dynamically scale down. This prevents all kinds of clock drift issues in guest VMs that expect a CPU cycle to be relatively constant.
