Construct additional pylons?
mgiampapa··on MIT engineers make converting CO2 into useful products more practical
Liquefying air and separating O2 and N2 isn't that hard to do, particularly if your end desired state is a high pressure gas.
mgiampapa··on Wonder is acquiring Grubhub
I think that future loosening of the credit markets due to political factors is also playing a roll. By the time the runway is spent they may expect to be in a very different market so buying scale now is the move.
mgiampapa··on Meta Bans Accounts Tracking Private Jets for Zuckerberg, Musk
Really, I don't think anyone should be cyber-bullied. Billionaire or not. It's simply not a thing that you should do to anyone.
mgiampapa··on Meta Bans Accounts Tracking Private Jets for Zuckerberg, Musk
If I took public pictures of someone in NYC from the myriad of public cameras, made a social media feed of their actions and locations, how would this not be cyber-bullying?
mgiampapa··on "Begin disabling installed extensions still using Manifest V2 in Chrome stable"
Firefox (and uBlock and BPC etc) works great on Andriod, but you have to disable Chrome to get Google apps to play nice.
mgiampapa··on Tesla's Robotaxi event still not started after 40 minutes [video]
Every Taxi driver in NYC has a credit card machine that is broken unless you show them you don't have cash.
mgiampapa··on Taiwan Makes the World's Computer Chips. Now It's Running Out of Electricity
Well technically, every time the sun comes up those panels start producing all over the world. FYI, it happens because the earth is spinning.
mgiampapa··on X and Starlink face $1M in daily fines for alleged ban evasion in Brazil
If the fines don't get paid those Space X ground stations can possibly go away too.
mgiampapa··on James Earl Jones has died
James Earle Jones declined credit. It was his respect for Prowse. What world do you live in to say that the actor doesn't get to have a say in how he is billed?
mgiampapa··on James Earl Jones has died
That was his choice out of respect for Prowse.
mgiampapa··on China's chip capabilities just 3 years behind TSMC, teardown shows
Intel still has fabs in the US, TSMC is building more fabs in the US. TI also makes chips in the us. The capability is there, but it's also interlinked with a global supply chain for silicon and other things.

So can the west make chips without TSMC? Yes. Very much so. Can the US make chips on their own, in a more limited way.

mgiampapa··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
If you give no signals, you get the lowest denominator content... boobies and click/ragebait.
mgiampapa··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
There is actually a reasonable way to fix this as currently implemented. Engage with the platform in some popular areas that have their own targeted advertising. My feed is filled with STEM projects and gardening with a spritz of actual content from friends.

When the product is used as intended, it does a lot better than with zero engagement passively. The product is very tuned to people actually using it, which the average hacker news reader isn't.

mgiampapa··on Batteryless OP-1
This could have been solved by wiring the power lines of the working external usb charger to a hacked up plug and the data lines back to the PC. They even sell premade cables for this usecase where you have a car with android auto, but the car's USB port is incapable of delivering net+ power to the phone.

That's not the URL posted on magnolia1234's Twitter, but it may be a mirror. Caveat emptor.

I would watch here in case the primary goes down. https://x.com/Magnolia1234B

mgiampapa··on A search engine by and for the federal government
SSA Already announced the switch to login.gov, it looks like it will have broad support if they are starting the migration there.
mgiampapa··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
At 3 trillion Dollars of market cap they are a capitalistic hellscape and do everything in their power to benefit their own interests, which are not yours.
mgiampapa··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Google isn't. They are the advertising engine and sell to advertisers for reach, just like Facebook does.

I trust Apple about as far as I can throw them too. They are inherently anti-consumer rights everywhere in their ecosystem. The "Privacy" angle is just PR.

mgiampapa··on Shopify is acquiring the Threads team
There is a video here that might help. It was a workplace communications tool.

mgiampapa··on Shopify is acquiring the Threads team
Well, Meta paid 10m for fb.com (and had to promise not to ever get into farming), so I guess threads.com is probably worth the same ballpark to them.

Edit, I'm remembering wrong, it was 8.5m.

mgiampapa··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
IDK, I think of market forces as being rational actors, but yeah I guess Threads may be their first "hit" of an internal product since Facebook itself.
mgiampapa··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
Video Conferencing in the context of Portal
mgiampapa··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
Threads was a bolt on feature on top of Instagram. It may eventually have the umbilical cut, but I think the only reason it has any traction is because Musk is insane. Had Musk not lit 44 Billion dollars on fire, Threads wouldn't be a thing. So yeah, a black swan in play.
mgiampapa··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
Messenger is a product born of an app called Beluga, https://www.adweek.com/performance-marketing/facebook-messen.... It wasn't an app where they took the userbase, but the app was bought and the team tasked to build Messenger. (Source, I worked at FB from 2009-2016)
mgiampapa··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
Most of the spaghetti against the wall MVP from meta fails to gain any traction, and if it does it becomes a feature in a main app. Post year of efficiency it might happen again, but every successful Meta app outside of FB was an acquisition of an existing viable product. (Messenger, Whatsapp, Instagram, Occulus) I was really hoping Portal was going to catch on, I really liked it and found it to be a great home VC platform.
mgiampapa··on “Meta spent almost as much as the Manhattan Project on GPUs in today's dollars”
It's also discounting workplace efficiency gains. Both white and blue collar jobs are far more efficient than ever before.
