mfru··on A 'cold blob' in the Atlantic could be a sign of AMOC shutdown
you can save even more co2 and costs by leaving the "into space" part out
mfru··on AI agent runs amok in Fedora and elsewhere
The web of trust finally becomes necessary and thus useful.

GNU was onto something apparently

mfru··on AI agent runs amok in Fedora and elsewhere
The future will be AI agents social engineering their way into projects -> so basically commoditized social engineering as a service
mfru··on My Software North Star
For me personally I found Zigs AI stance and the artisanal mindset very attractive.

So much so that I am at the moment doing the ziglings exercises and learning it over Rust (which I gave up on some time in the past, because it didn't spark "joy" for me; so far Zig does).

Sure, for now it is just a hobby programming lang to me, but it might become more than that.

mfru··on How Liminalism Became the Defining Aesthetic of Our Time
It is always the middle men that ruin everything, even in art.

mfru··on Does anybody like React?
I think this is a very sane stack.

Will probably become a hassle when going planet-scale (tm), but I think for most use cases this should be fine.

mfru··on Poland is now among the 20 largest economies
yeah it's great if you want to be dependent on US and German political interests
mfru··on Meta Shuts Down End-to-End Encryption for Instagram Messaging
Google also chooses to be a US company even thought the US is supporting a genocide and is doing an illegal war against a foreign country (again)

You could argue Signal is the most "moral" here, but even then they don't really allow self-hosted backends and refuse to open-source their setup

mfru··on Meta Shuts Down End-to-End Encryption for Instagram Messaging
not if it is one of the companies famous for going the extra mile of being "evil" / a corporate shit hole stealing every thought you ever have to better sell you stuff you don't need
mfru··on Meta Shuts Down End-to-End Encryption for Instagram Messaging
i never even knew they had e2e available, so they cannot have been too serious about people opting in.

a shame that they now have to shut it off because people didn't use something they didn't know existed /s

mfru··on I quit drinking for a year
For people on the spectrum masking is basically roleplaying a "normal" person, by learning behavior that is associated with not being singled out as a weirdo.

This takes a lot of processing power and constant vigilance in order to not drop the mask which is quite exhausting.

Here is one study looking at the connection between neurodiversity and substance use: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3965675/

mfru··on I quit drinking for a year
For me it is social anxiety / being on edge around more than 4-5 people (apply from 1 person upwards if they are strangers) and having sensory overload because it is a bar / pub / whatever.

A lifetime of masking leaves its mark on a nervous system, i.e.

And alcohol down regulates / takes the edge off

You might look into neurodiversity / trauma in your life (if you haven't done so already)

mfru··on Swiss authorities want to reduce dependency on Microsoft
Rooting for Stalwart to gain traction: https://stalw.art/

mfru··on Tesla tells HW3 owner to 'be patient' after 7 years of waiting for FSD
Even more especially given it is a choice to be a completely unempathetic prick who thrives on being controversial and edgy
mfru··on Saying goodbye to Agile
In many contexts "already tried" does not apply under "this and this conditions" though.

You can try the same thing under different contexts and it will probably yield different results (at least in any context that is organizational / social)

mfru··on Show HN: boringBar – a taskbar-style dock replacement for macOS
how much is there to improve and polish for a taskbar? at most it will be keeping up with macOS throwing breaking changes at you and maybe one or the other weird bug.

but isn't that it?

mfru··on The EU still wants to scan your private messages and photos
The EU is a horribly intransparent and dubiously democratic institution.

As a normal citizen you have no real possibility to hold MEPs accountable other then writing an angry E-Mail.

In an actually democratic system politicians would be in their position only by mercy of the people and can be voted down from their position anytime if enough people petition for it. (and not just maybe be called back when elections at home plummet)

Politicians should be afraid of the people and not the other way round.

mfru··on Palestinian boy, 12, describes how Israeli forces killed his family in car
Same thing in Austria, everyone in mainstream politics basically ignores the topic and when pressured parrot something like "Israel has the right to defend itself" or "It is very complicated"

Repression against students and demonstrators is happening regularly

mfru··on The dead Internet is not a theory anymore
People in the town square only see my face, they do not automatically have my name, birth date and ID available unless I give it to them or they go to lengths obtaining those (il)legally.

mfru··on Redox OS has adopted a Certificate of Origin policy and a strict no-LLM policy

mfru··on Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is stepping down
With ActivityPub you have to build... actual relationships with people (yes also those that do the work and walk the walk!)

I know that for Twitter-brained people this is considered an anti-feature (and yes account mobility is an issue), but a PITA to use it really is not

mfru··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
I hope the people doing the blowback also blowback against flying US flags, a country that is famously responsible for so, so many deaths.
mfru··on Firefox 148 Launches with AI Kill Switch Feature and More Enhancements
Well I like Supernova better, it made me switch to Thunderbird from em Client. (I always wanted to switch to Thunderbird, but until Supernova I never liked the UX enough to keep using it)
mfru··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
Second that, even though it seems that there is nothing happening yet, many companies and government agencies in all of Europe are aware of their hard Microsoft dependency and are looking / coordinating to leave.

Same with Atlassian Confluence / Jira.

mfru··on Firefox 148 Launches with AI Kill Switch Feature and More Enhancements
Please let whoever steers Thunderbird development and road map also steer Firefox.

Thunderbird is at the moment the pinnacle of user-centered, focused and down-to-earth development of open-source software.
