mfoy_··on Show HN: I made a resume generator for developers
To quote Drawn Together's Foxxy Love: "This whole test is racially biased! Question one: 'What SPF lotion would you use if your were going down to the polo grounds, fellow Klan member?'"
mfoy_··on Show HN: I made a resume generator for developers
Well, I'm not American...
mfoy_··on Show HN: I made a resume generator for developers
You get a lot of weird stuff from overseas resumes: photos, religion, gender, marital status, father's name, etc...
mfoy_··on Show HN: I made a resume generator for developers
I mean... other than the obvious ones? (i.e. the same reasons which are why North American companies usually don't or can't request a photo...)
mfoy_··on How prices changed at a Walmart in a year
The people who "select the best product" basically only have visuals to go on, therefore they actually select for the prettiest product, not the best tasting product.
mfoy_··on How prices changed at a Walmart in a year
Similarly my parents live in a rural community and practically everyone grows garlic, but farm-stands have trouble competing with grocery store (read: Chinese) garlic.
mfoy_··on Sauropod Neck Posture
Well, I don't know about dinosaurs, but horses have small blood pumps in their hooves. So each step helps circulate blood. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frog_(horse_anatomy)
mfoy_··on Sauropod Neck Posture
Agreed, the rider would be less likely to fall off, and would have better visibility.
mfoy_··on Sauropod Neck Posture
Blood vessels can expand and contract. That's why fighter pilots without legs can actually withstand higher-g maneuvers. That's also why compression socks can improve circulation and reduce swelling in your ankles if you have to stand all day.
mfoy_··on Harvesting LinkedIn data for fun and profit
By getting publicity he builds social capital, which he (presumably) can turn into real capital through his work.

From his bio "...leading the evolution of startups and enterprises to achieve the highest level of security and compliance."

mfoy_··on Physicists finally nail the proton’s size, eliminating an anomaly
I guess it's hard to say, because we don't know what we don't know. The famous example is Newtonian physics which seemed to perfectly explain everything.... until new tools and methods came out that were capable of showing it break down under extreme circumstances. That's how we ended up with Einsteinian physics, where it accounted for the old model and the new observed discrepancies.

So... how do we know that we will not find some bizarre scenario in the future the throws the Standard Model into a similar existential crisis?

I say keep your mind open.

mfoy_··on What College Admissions Want
I think this is the point:

>There is a popular and persistent image of college admissions in which diversity-obsessed universities are using affirmative action to deny spaces to academically talented affluent students while admitting low-income students with lower ability in their place. Boeckenstedt says the opposite is closer to the truth.

mfoy_··on Michael Bloomberg launches $160M initiative to ban flavored e-cigarettes
Anecdotally, I know people who started vaping without ever having touched cigarettes before.
mfoy_··on WeWork Bonds Drop Below Par for First Time Since IPO Filing
>Your post seems to say

I think it clearly does not. It was descriptive, not prescriptive.

mfoy_··on Questions to ask a company during a job interview
I love fake-Agile, it's such a hilarious concept.
mfoy_··on The Heir to a Tofu Dynasty Finally Learns to Make Tofu
The number of ingredients something has is not a good proxy for its difficulty.

For example, tapioca only contains Cassava root, but here is how that is made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4qTxKdjagg

Maybe provide more substantive comments in the future if you don't want down-votes?

mfoy_··on DRM Broke Its Promise
I think that we can safely assume that if something directly comparable but much worse, both ethically and legally, has occurred (e.g. doctors being bribed by pharma companies to over-prescribe their drug), then it's not a stretch to give this claim the benefit of the doubt.

Anecdotally, I once had a professor who had personally remixed an existing textbook and forced us to buy his version for the class, because he would reference page numbers and chapter headings from his version. Admittedly, this is essentially what most "nth edition" textbooks do anyways, but it was a little jarring to see him personally emulate this so directly and unscrupulously.

mfoy_··on NULL license plate not such a bright idea
According to KeePass2, the password: "12" contains 7 bits of entropy, but "1234" only contains 5 bits of entropy.

Is that right?

mfoy_··on The Lonely Work of Moderating Hacker News
Ah, darn, I was hoping for a whole bevy of cool links. Thanks! :)
mfoy_··on The Lonely Work of Moderating Hacker News
Don't suppose you saved a link to that comment?
mfoy_··on Bitcoin expert scams a scammer, donates the money to charity
Probably forgot his password.

mfoy_··on If Sapiens were a blog post
The nature of the book necessitates gross generalizations. It literally could not be anything else.

It's like saying you don't like Expanse because you don't like sci-fi... Okay, but why did you read it if you know you hate sci-fi?

mfoy_··on If Sapiens were a blog post
Thanks! This comment was exactly what I was asking for, and it inspired some good follow-up comments!
mfoy_··on If Sapiens were a blog post
I mean, that's obviously a "gross generalization".
mfoy_··on If Sapiens were a blog post
Gross generalizations aside, do you have any examples of things he gets really wrong?
mfoy_··on I’m in the 1 Percent. Please, Raise My Taxes
I've thought a lot about that option, but the problem is that wealth provides a disproportionate amount of influence in politics.

If all the people who didn't want to give any of it up hoarded it and spent it lobbying to keep inequality at a maximum and the people who wanted equality gave the majority of their wealth away then we would very quickly find ourselves in a dystopian nightmare.

It has to be everyone, equally. It has to by a systemic change.

mfoy_··on Same-sex marriage legalization associated with reduced antigay bias
Except one person has no rights and is literally the equivalent to a nice laptop in the eyes of the law.
