mfkp··on Show HN: A JavaScript library for data visualization in both SVG and Canvas
The demo needs some work on mobile phones. Doesn't even show up unless I put my phone in landscape mode.
mfkp··on Shorebird 1.0 – Update your Flutter apps instantly
Dupe, additional comments here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39973150
mfkp··on Show HN: Shorebird 1.0, Flutter Code Push
Looks cool. Was just about to start a new project with react native, but I might just have to check out flutter again to give this a shot.

mfkp··on Lead in gasoline blunted IQ of half the U.S. population, study says
Seed oils generally refers to things like sunflower oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, vegetable oil, etc.

The best mass produced oils are probably olive and avocado.

This video has a pretty good breakdown of the science: https://youtu.be/IDZmXzAMmwI

mfkp··on JPEG XL and the Pareto Front
I've noticed in chrome-based browsers, you can right click on a webp file and "edit image". When you save it, it defaults to png download, which makes a simple conversion.

Mobile browsers seem to default to downloading in png as well.

mfkp··on Figure out who's leaving the company: dump, diff, repeat
Ha, I did this about 10-15 years ago at a prior company. The turnover was so high (especially in the sales staff) that there would be at least a handful of people mysteriously disappearing each week.

I automated a small newsletter called "The Weekly Diff" for a few close trusted coworkers and sent it out each Friday with a list of who's new and who was missing from the company directory. And I kept a scraped database including phone numbers in case anyone wanted to reach out to anyone after they'd been removed.

Sometimes you make the best out of a failing company culture. Kept a lot of friends that way just by reaching out with some words of support :)

mfkp··on Launch HN: Loops (YC W22) – Email for SaaS Companies
My company has 500k+ "contacts", but we rarely send emails. It seems to me like your pricing can't work for me, so I'll stick with Brevo/SendInBlue until you decide to change that pricing.
mfkp··on Show HN: HyperDX – open-source dev-friendly Datadog alternative
Looks very interesting, although a lot of the OpenTelemetry libraries are incomplete: https://opentelemetry.io/docs/instrumentation/

Especially Ruby, which is the one that I would be most interested in using.

mfkp··on GM reverses plan to retire Chevrolet Bolt as it chases EV target
Believe it or not, adapters exist.
mfkp··on Dropped iPad implicated in fatal Rotak Chinook helicopter crash
My ipad shut down today on the ground while taking off due to extreme heat. Luckily I'm not an idiot and have backups in the cockpit.
mfkp··on Flora Incognita – free AI-supported plant identification university project
I've only used PlantNet in the past. Worked well for me the few times I've used it.

mfkp··on Health System in Minnesota Cuts Off Patients with Medical Debt
5 days in a hospital room during covid was enough for the hospital to bill nearly $150k, for reference.
mfkp··on Ask HN: Is there a webapp to input/store your blood test results?
Awesome project. Was poking around to see how the sources are generated, but it seems like the repo doesn't exist (or was made private)? https://github.com/fastenhealth/fasten-sources-gen
mfkp··on YouTuber who staged plane crash faces up to 20 years jail
Yes, multiple people on YouTube recreated the scenario in a flight simulator and found that it could have been landed safely.
mfkp··on Tell HN: The “Y” logo in the top-left corner has been upgraded to SVG
It's a reference to "code golf", where you try to make your code as compact and the least number of bytes possible.

"Ungolfed" in this context means that it was cleaned up to make it more readable, at the expense of adding a few more bytes to the size.

mfkp··on Google urges Android phone users to switch off Wi-Fi calling
FYI if you bought your S22 Ultra in the US, it probably isn't necessary. Only the European models were shipped with the Exynos chipset and would be vulnerable. The US version was shipped with a Qualcomm chipset, so it shouldn't be an issue.

(This is what I recall on the top of my head though, so you might want to double check this info)

mfkp··on Launch HN: Pynecone (YC W23) – Web Apps in Pure Python
The slider component needs some work. Would be nice to have the option to update the local UI in realtime as you slide, then send the state change once it's dropped (on_change_end). Right now it's way too laggy and feels unnatural. And you can't be precise with the slider unless you have the indication it's in the right place.
mfkp··on Pgrok – Poor Man’s Ngrok
Let's say you're running a local development server on localhost:3000

If you want to share this with someone not on your computer, it will proxy through a real domain name that someone else can access remotely.

mfkp··on U-2 pilot's selfie above China's balloon taken over Missouri
https://a1solarstore.com/solar-panels.html

370w panel for $266 (there's lots of good deals out there if you shop around).

If you want to save more money and buy by the pallet (22 panels), they're around $182 each for 330w: https://sunelec.com/shop/solar-panels/suniva-330w-solar-pane...

mfkp··on U-2 pilot's selfie above China's balloon taken over Missouri
I highly doubt they're using aerospace-grade solar panels. If they were installing them on a permanent satellite, sure, but this is on a presumably disposable balloon. Even accounting for higher solar radiation and degradation of the panels, the lifespan of regular terrestrial panels should be plenty sufficient.
mfkp··on U-2 pilot's selfie above China's balloon taken over Missouri
$100k of solar? 360w panels are sub-$300 at full retail prices. So that's under $5k of panels (unless you're including batteries in the calculation, but even then, it's maybe $10k).
mfkp··on Zantac’s maker kept quiet about cancer risks for 40 years
And Medly filed for bankruptcy in December, and sold it's digital assets to Walgreens as of last week (and is now shut down completely).

mfkp··on Zantac’s maker kept quiet about cancer risks for 40 years
It looks like it wasn't profitable enough for them, Valisure doesn't seem to run their online pharmacy anymore.

As of 2021, it appears they pivoted to running the lab as a service for other companies. I found one online pharmacy that was using Valisure (Medly.com) but it appears to have gone bankrupt, assets acquired by Walgreens and shut down.

mfkp··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
That's true of US-based manufacturers, but foreign manufacturers thrived during that time (French, etc).
mfkp··on Take more screenshots (2022)
I've been using https://screencloud.net/ for the past few years. Custom file naming rules, you can upload to your own FTP server, then it will automatically copy a link to the file. Works perfectly for sharing and archiving screenshots.
mfkp··on Rails on Docker
I've been using Cloud66 since 2015 for my rails deployments, makes my life much easier!
mfkp··on Ask HN: Why it is hard for US to move to metric system?
METARs more commonly use statute miles for visibility (indicated by SM), not meters. But they do use things like Celsius for temperatures, and air pressure in hectopascals instead of inHg.
