mfester··on Snips AIR: an open source, private, blockchain-based alternative to Amazon Echo
Hi! I am co-founder of Snips (https://www.snips.ai), and happy to share a big announcement with you: in the end of 2019, we will start shipping Snips AIR (https://air.snips.ai), the first open source, private by design voice assistant running on the blockchain! If you want to learn more, we are hosting a livestream Q&A session tomorrow Wednesday, May 30th at 6pm CET, with my co-founder, Rand Hindi. Let us know you'll be there by filling this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd8n6ER5OrSBH_w5kwp..., and we will send the link to the livestream prior to the event.

mfester··on Show HN: Benchmarking Microphone Arrays
Hi, co-author here (and co-founder of www.snips.ai). We are building a voice platform for IoT which runs 100% on-device, because we don't want our devices to stream everything we say to a server.

At Snips, we've been using a bunch of mic arrays connected to Raspberry Pi devices, with various degrees of success. We realised that resources on the topic are scarce, so we decided to do a thorough benchmark of what we found to be the most popular mic arrays accessible to the maker community.

We'd love to have your feedback. If you have other microphone arrays you'd like us to include in this benchmark, let us know!

Good idea! We haven't looked into this yet, although we are preparing iOS and Android versions of Snips which run entirely on the phone.

Yes, as per my comment to badlogic, we are about to publish an in-depth guide for microphone solutions. So far, the ReSpeaker ($79, https://www.seeedstudio.com/ReSpeaker-Mic-Array-Far-field-w%...) seems to be the most promising, but the Micro Semi and MiniDSP are also good. The Matrix Creator has a lot of potential, but requires quite some tweaking to get good performance. We are eagerly waiting for their Matrix Voice to ship. We'll post our findings next week on https://labs.snips.ai.

Hey Mario, OP here. Indeed, DIY guides are badly lacking in this domain. We are preparing a thorough benchmark of existing microphone array solutions. It will feature the ReSpeaker, Conexant, Matrix Creator, MicroSemi and MiniDSP which are all built for 360-degrees far-field audio capture. The goal is to have an excellent, affordable, and replicable hardware setup on par with Alexa and Google. Stay tuned!

Here is what we've been playing with: - Matrix Creator: https://creator.matrix.one/ - ReSpeaker: https://www.seeedstudio.com/s/respeaker.html - Conexant: http://conexant.com (quite expensive, but powerful) We are also waiting for the Matrix Voice, still on Indiegogo, due late Summer: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/matrix-voice-open-source-.... As mentioned earlier, we will soon release a benchmark of the various mic array solutions, as well as tutorials for setting them up.

Yes absolutely. In fact we created a dedicated Labs team within Snips (check out http://labs.snips.ai) with that in mind: to create DIY hacks, proof-of-concepts, benchmarks and related material for the community. We are just getting started, and have published our first post on building a connected speaker: https://medium.com/snips-ai/how-to-build-a-voice-controlled-.... Stay tuned, many more are coming over the next months.

We've been experimenting with three setups so far: the Matrix Creator, the ReSpeaker and the Conexant. We will soon publish an in-depth benchmark, as well as (highly needed!) tutorials on how to set them up so that they work optimally as audio capture devices on Raspberry.
