mfbx9da4··on The age of average
I remember a psychological experiment where they averaged faces artificially and the averaged faces consistently would be ranked the most beautiful.

Nice little rabbit hole you ended up in!
mfbx9da4··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2023)
Onin | London, UK or similar timezone | REMOTE | Mobile, React Native, Swift, Objective-C | £100-£120K + £100K options + Private Health Insurance + 33 days holiday (incl. bank holidays) The app: https://onin.co

With a founding team of just two we closed a seed round of £2.75M in July 2022. We’ve since hired two engineers. We plan on keeping the engineering team as small as possible with a highly selective hiring process. Our app is built in React Native but we are only considering candidates with significant Swift / Objective-C experience as building a high quality app often requires dipping into the native APIs. This is an opportunity to be part of a founding team building a high quality product.

Onin is a social calendar, with an emphasis on security. Conventional calendars are geared towards businesses, but Onin is designed for personal use among friends and family. Every event is paired with a chat. Above all, we prioritize the privacy of our users and guarantee that all user-generated content is protected by end-to-end encryption. Onin was founded by Ryan Brodie [0]. Ryan has had four successful exits and is a YC alumn.

Cool idea
mfbx9da4··on SBF Arrested by Bahamian Authorities
Hopefully all his fellow colluders will also go to jail. He didn't do this single handedly.
mfbx9da4··on Show HN: Speed up your site by running JavaScript when the browser is idle
If the task is a long running expensive task, it's going to block the main thread from being responsive to user input. If it's a quick task then you don't need to schedule it. I struggle to see the place for a medium length task which is long enough that it needs to be deferred but short enough that it can't be executed immediately.

What would be an example?

Or... use a web worker

This epitomizes my passion for coding -- it's the lowest barrier to entry for being an inventor
mfbx9da4··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
This is how I see it could work:

* Queries are encoded into sql and matcher functions

* Whenever data is mutated a change set is emitted - eg similar to immer

* This change set is used to generate SQL UPDATE statements

* The change set is also sent to matcher functions, the matcher functions update the query results accordingly

mfbx9da4··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
I think that CRDT and OTs are a bit overkill for TinyBase. Most apps are not text editors or figma. Most apps are just forms. The general solution for forms is to track which fields on a record have been modified by the user. The user’s change is the source truth and never gets overwritten by the network. Other fields are free to be updated collaboratively from the network. Once the user has synced that field it is free to be updated by the network.

This kind of solution can be built on top of TinyBase without CRDTs.

My pleasure, happy to discuss how to architect if there’s a discord / GitHub issue. I know for a fact the react native community are pining for this.
mfbx9da4··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
You’re 80% of the way there now that you have encoded SQL-like syntax now all you have to do is to translate that into raw SQL queries to be executed
mfbx9da4··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
Yeah but I feel like it could be used for that, if only retrieval and storage could be done incrementally…
mfbx9da4··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
If I understand correctly the issue with storing and retrieving from SQLite is that it won’t be incremental?
mfbx9da4··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
The main limitation I see with tiny base is that it has to load all data in one batch and modifying any record results in the whole data store being persisted to disk. Surely this can’t scale well…
mfbx9da4··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
Wait so can you actually connect tiny base to SQLite?
mfbx9da4··on Preact Signals

mfbx9da4··on Difftastic, the fantastic diff
I would love to use this but I can't be bothered to save the text to a file every time. I always paste into

Does anybody know any better alternatives which work with pasting?

mfbx9da4··on Ask HN: Seeking Cryptography Certification
Which part time masters degrees? I've looked hard for part time masters but didn't find one which seemed very appealing.
mfbx9da4··on NIST unveils four ‘quantum-proof’ cryptography algorithms
> It took over 350 years to crack Fermats last theorem. These are the timescales at which we solve hard math problems

By “crack” they mean, prove the theorem holds. They make it sound like somebody hacked into Fermat’s last theorem and found an exploit which broke a bunch of cryptography, that’s not true. (Unlike Fermat’s little theorem, which underpins RSA, Fermat’s last theorem has no relevance to crypto AFIK).

I know very little about quantum computing but my understanding is that it will just be a much more powerful computer and therefore all the current key sizes that we use for cryptography will be rendered vulnerable to brute force attacks. Maybe these algorithms just find a practical ways of increasing the key size?

It sounds like the assumption is quantum computers will actually solve some fundamental things in number theory we don’t know how to do e.g. find an efficient algorithm for prime factorisation…

mfbx9da4··on Ask HN: Seeking Cryptography Certification
Sounds a bit discouraging to be honest but fair.
