metasj··on ICANN races towards regulatory capture: the great .org heist
This outcome is worse than any of the 'worst-case' scenarios hypothesized by the ICA when they filed their open letter of complaint in May when the price cap was listed. In hindsight, why would ICANN classify .org (with its enormous base and community) the way it does new TLDs?

Would ICANN have any recourse if, after allowing this sale, the established registry dramatically raised prices?

metasj··on Mastering Atari, Go, Chess and Shogi by Planning with a Learned Model
Beating AlphaZero at Go, Chess, and Shogi, an mastering a suite of Atari video games that other AIs have failed to do efficiently. No explicit heads-up contests with a trained AlphaZero; but apparently hits an ELO threshold w/ fewer training cycles. Yowsa.

Now that's something else! How delightful. Drawn from the Wayback Machine perhaps?

I like that they have a technical paper on how to format your data for epistemic analysis: http://www.epistemicnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/E...
metasj··on Show HN: I made a platform for journalists to “open source” their fact checking
This one fascinates for a few additional reasons, which a third-party site that supports revising and completing stories could address:

* It shows how automated the echo chamber is. The real crash cause is a more interesting + rare story. (though needs A/B testing) * It shows how short-lived major coverage is. While most passengers unfortunately perished in the crash, _both the driver and the arguing passenger survived_, and will end up in court once they recover. This was mentioned by very few outlets, but will eventually help inform understanding of the event.

metasj··on Show HN: I made a platform for journalists to “open source” their fact checking
Wikipedia, for a few high-profile current events each week, serves a function similar to the one proposed for sourcedfact; and it regularly results in deeper + more contextualized coverage than even the best outlets. However, WP's commitment to being a tertiary source means that _some_ secondary source has to properly interpret the primary sources, before that interpretation can be included.

My favorite example, much clearer even than Covington (and never corrected in the major media): the bus driver who drove drove his bus off of a bridge: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-46068412

For whatever reason, the official police report implied that a passenger struggled with the driver causing the disaster. The next day, video footage of the entire event was released (from the security cam inside the bus), showing a different story. The driver pretty clearly decides to go over the edge, turns the wheel, and does not flinch or turn it back as they go over.

After the video came out, dozens of major outlets covered the story. Almost all ran with "passenger hits driver causing crash", one or two did not specify a cause. No major outlet suggested [what seems to me to be] the most likely account, which is "driver deliberately drives bus off of bridge during argument with passenger".

In contrast, on youtube / other social media, most commentators pointed out that the driver seemed to crash deliberately, changing course many seconds after the passenger hits him on the arm with her phone.

Confirming: I have served on the Board with Jimmy for three years. He takes no salary or expenses from the Foundation.

For instance, while most of our 10-person Board (who all volunteer our time) have travel and lodging for Board meetings reimbursed, he arranges his own.

To the contrary, he promotes WMF fundraising, and encourages groups to which he speaks to donate or provide in-kind support to the WMF.

A good citation to a printed published work grants you demigod-like powers when editing an article - if the work itself is notable. If it's self-published or has no information demonstrating it is a reliable source, not so much.
metasj··on Diaspora Co-Founder Ilya Zhitomirskiy Passes Away At 21
Just so. Ilya was one of the most creative and clear-eyed people I ever met. He had a gift for projecting possibilities into the future and condensing a great deal of thought into a few observations.

I was inspired by time spent with him, and my own ideas flourished as a result. It's painful to think that noone will get to talk or dream with him again, but I am grateful for the brief time I had.
